2 1. Please read both selections below and then answer the questions that follow. A Growing Friendship Sabrina s eyes grew wide like saucers as she entered her third grade classroom on Monday morning. The usual rows of desks were nowhere to be seen. Instead, the room looked like a science lab. Tables with microscopes, measuring cups, rulers, and other science equipment filled the room. Hang up your backpacks and find your table, Ms. Tulley called from the front of the room. Sabrina giggled at her teacher s white lab coat and protective eye goggles. This was going to be an unusual day in Room 3B. Sabrina quickly followed her teacher s directions. But when she found her table, Sabrina wilted. Sitting next to plastic pots, measuring cups, and a ruler was a packet of bean seeds and some potting soil. She would have to grow bean plants. Sabrina let out a heavy sigh. The last time she tried to plant a seed, she added too much water and the plant never grew. When her mom asked her to help take care of some flowers, they wilted. As Sabrina sadly fumbled the packet of seeds through her fingers, a boy named Lucas approached her table. He pointed to the card on the table with his name on it. I m your lab partner, he said shyly. Sabrina nodded awkwardly. Lucas was a quiet student. He was new to the school, and Sabrina had not talked with him much. She was sure Lucas was nice. But she really wished her teacher had partnered her up with her best friend Keisha, especially if she was going to have to grow a plant. Keisha had a green thumb. She always took good care of plants. You don t want to be my partner, Sabrina mumbled to Lucas. I m not very good at growing seeds. Lucas stared blankly back at her. Then Sabrina really worried. Ms. Tulley spoke again. The procedure for your experiment is on your table. It will explain exactly what you and your partner are supposed to do. You may begin now, she instructed. Sabrina looked up at Lucas. Why couldn t she be at the table where students grew crystals or made volcanoes? What had started out as a fun morning was quickly turning into the worst day of the school year. At first, the two young scientists quietly stared at the materials on their table. Finally, Lucas picked up the card with the procedure for their assignment written on it. The card outlined exactly what they should do with the seeds. Lucas spoke first. This isn t so hard, he said. We need to plant a seed in three different pots. Lucas opened the bag of potting soil and picked up a pot. Sabrina was surprised at the way he took charge. She had never really even heard him speak. Lucas helped Sabrina measure two cups of soil into three different plastic pots. Then they used the ruler to measure and pressed a bean seed 4 cm down into the soil in each pot. Sabrina smiled as the soil squished between her fingers, and Lucas laughed out loud. Now we have to water the seeds, Lucas read from the card. Only we need to use tap water, soda water, and apple juice, Sabrina read the card, too. She was becoming more confident as she and Lucas performed each step of the experiment. Mrs. Tulley kept all of the liquids in the back of the room. Together, Sabrina and Lucas went to measure the correct amount of liquid to pour into each cup. As Sabrina nervously tried to fill a measuring cup with apple juice, she nervously spilled the juice on the counter. Frustrated, she set down the cup and looked anxiously at Lucas. Now she remembered why she didn t like to water plants. Copyright 2014 by Georgia Department of Education. Items shall not be used in a third party system or displayed publicly. Page: (2 of 12 )

3 Don t worry, you will be fine. Just be patient while you measure, he said calmly. I m glad you are my partner, Sabrina admitted as Lucas helped her finish adding liquid to each pot. You seem to know a lot about growing seeds. Lucas smiled. Well, my dad works in a garden nursery. We have lots of plants and flowers at home, he confessed. I like helping him in the yard, and he tells me a lot about caring for the different types of plants. Just then, Mrs. Tulley called for attention. It s time to clean up for the day. Tomorrow we will observe our experiments and see if a change has occurred. Sabrina couldn t wait to discover which liquid would grow the best bean plant. She had a new attitude toward plants, too. Maybe my mom could bring me to the nursery sometime, she said to Lucas. I d like to try taking care of another plant. I think you d do a good job, Lucas replied. Just remember to take your time and water your plant carefully. Thanks, said Sabrina. She hoped to someday have a green thumb like Keisha, too. Science Experiment Bean seeds are very easy to grow. You can experiment to discover what type of liquid will grow the best bean plants. Materials you will need: a packet of bean seeds some potting soil 6 plastic cups apple juice soda water tap water a 1-cup measuring cup a measuring cup that measures 1/8 cup a ruler a pen for labeling paper for taking notes Procedure: 1. Label the plastic cups: Water A, Water B, Soda Water A, Soda Water B, Apple Juice A, and Apple Juice B. 2. Fill each cup with 2 cups of potting soil. 3. Press one bean seed 4 cm deep into the soil of each cup. 4. Pour 1/8 cup tap water into the cups labeled Water A and Water B. Copyright 2014 by Georgia Department of Education. 4 5. Pour 1/8 cup soda water into the cups labeled Soda Water A and Soda Water B. 6. Pour 1/8 cup apple juice into the cups labeled Apple Juice A and Apple Juice B. 7. Set the plastic cups in a well-lit area in a safe spot. 8. Pour 1/8 cup of the correct liquid into the correct cup every other day. 9. Every day, observe the cups for growth, and write down what you see. When the beans begin to sprout, use the ruler to measure the height of the shoots. Make a table like the one below to record your data and observations. 10. After ten days, you will be able to answer the question: Which liquid will grow the best bean plants? Explain why Sabrina felt nervous about doing something new. Use details from the story and your own personal experience to support your explanation. 2. 5 Please read the selection below and then answer the questions that follow. How the Ostrich Got Its Long Neck Once, long before the world had any name at all, Ostrich lived with his friends in a land with yellow grasses, tall trees and still waters. On this fine, warm day, Ostrich saw Snake talking to Lizard. He ran over to better hear what they were saying. Ostrich did so love to hear interesting news! His neck was very short, so he had to walk right up to the small animals and lean very close to hear what they were saying. He was upset when he heard Snake say, "Well, I think it would be best if I lived in a hole in the ground. That way, big animals couldn t see me." "Oh, Snake!" cried Ostrich. "What a terrible idea! You deserve a beautiful home. Don t you agree, Lizard?" Lizard, who thought a hole in the ground sounded quite fine, began to speak, but Ostrich cut him off. "You both should talk to Mole before you build underground homes, you know. He would know the most about it. Though I know quite a bit about it myself, since I have studied, well, everything." He laughed, ducking his head a little to show how humble he was. Of course, he was actually very proud. He believed he was the most handsome animal in the world, and the smartest, too. Lizard and Snake nodded and said thank you. Then they moved further down the plains to a lovely pond to talk to Hippo. Ostrich was very curious, though, so he followed them, stretching his neck a bit to hear what they were saying. His neck popped and grew a little longer. The three animals moved even farther away. He wondered why they had gone to the far side of the pond. He caught the words, "Water...Eating...Grass..." and he strained his neckbones to hear Hippo finish saying, "I think this is the best food in the world!" Hippo took a big chomp of water grass. Ostrich hollered, "The best food in the WORLD?!" He thundered over to them, not even noticing the frowns on his friend s faces. "Hippo, let me tell you something! Wet, slimy weeds are no food for any animal! Why, look at all this tasty dry grass all around us and the delicious berries on those bushes!" Hippo said perhaps Ostrich was right and then wandered away with Lizard and Snake, leaving the pond behind. Ostrich watched them, confused. He followed behind them for a bit, trying to hear what they were saying. His neck stretched longer than it had been before! But his friends were still walking, so he hurried to keep up. Right near the mountains, the group ran into Lion and began chatting. Ostrich did not like Lion. He made Copyright 2014 by Georgia Department of Education. 6 him nervous with all those very large teeth. But he was so very, very curious. Ostrich stayed put, but he leaned his head as far in their direction as he could. He could not quite hear them. He stretched his neck even further, but did not notice how long his neck was truly becoming. "I think...ostrich..." They were talking about him! His need to know what they were saying felt like a bunch of mosquitoes biting at him, but he could not stand to get one step closer to Lion. Yet he had to know what they were saying! So with all his strength, he gave one last yank to stretch his neck as hard as he could to overhear them. It worked! He clearly heard Lion say, "Well, Ostrich does like to stick his nose in everybody else s business." What? He did not do that! He stormed up to his friends. "What do you mean I am a busybody! I am not!" Everyone turned to face him. They laughed and laughed. Hippo said, "Oh, Ostrich, what about telling me which foods to eat? Snake said, "Or telling me where to live?" Lion simply said, "If you weren t sticking your neck out so far to listen to everyone else s business, why else did it get so long?" Ostrich realized his neck WAS much longer than it had been! He was so embarrassed he took off running. He thought back to the last few days as he ran. He didn t want to admit they were right, so he ran faster. He ran faster and faster, his long neck wobbling as he ran. Later, he did stop and think things through. He even told his friends he was sorry and changed his nosy ways. But to this day, ostriches have very long necks for their bodies and are the fastest runners of all the birds in the world. What important lesson does Ostrich learn at the end of the story? 7 3. Please read the selection below and then answer the questions that follow. A Mountain Hike Each year we take an adventurous hike, Setting forth on a mountain trail. How far can we go? How high will we climb? With our spirit we never can fail! Up the steepest of ground this year we begin Over rocky and sharp terrain, The more climbing we do, the more steep it becomes And excitement sets in again. Far ahead we observe a familiar sign That welcomes us to a place Where the ground flattens out and flat boulders reveal A beautiful wilderness space. Here the rocks are so smooth you can slip down their sides, Like slides on a recess playground. Mom and Dad stop to rest while we play on the rocks, Our laughter makes echoing sounds. If we look deep down to the valley below, An amazing sight to take in, Evergreen fir trees waving goodbye As we continue to climb once again. Moving on we pass through the aspen trees, Rattling like rain in our ears. Their leaves flutter softly like butterfly wings And another steep incline appears. More uphill, deep breaths, but we know what it s worth To go further than ever before. Each year we discover more beauty unknown On our stunning wilderness tour. Colorful wildflowers line the trail To the top they seem to guide. Bright yellow, deep blue, purple, and pink Paint the vibrant mountainside. Finally we round a bend in the trail To see creek water trickling down. The water streams over rocks and trees And forms a gentle pool on the ground. A good place to rest, so we wade in the pool. Mom and Dad serve us a snack. And we eat and we play as we refresh our toes, Then its time to get back on track. Soon a giant boulder appears in the middle of the trail, A sight we cannot deny. This is the spot where we stopped last year So we excitedly pass it by. Enjoying the breeze as upward we climb Copyright 2014 by Georgia Department of Education. 8 To new and unseen heights. We have more spring in our rising steps, The unvisited peak in our sights. The crest of the mountain welcomes us here, A remarkable view from above. Mom and Dad take a picture so we ll never forget This time on the mountain we love. But as we explore the summit so proud, Through the rocks a new trail appears. The path will continue, more sights to explore We will plan to discover next year. This task has more than one (1) part. Read each part carefully and respond. Part A In the first stanza of the poem, how does the family feel about going up the mountain? Use details from the poem to help explain your answer. Part B What is the family doing in stanzas two and three? Do their feelings about the mountain hike change or stay the same? Use details from the poem to help explain your answer. Part C Which stanza in the poem do you believe shows the family having the most fun? Explain your reason. Be sure to complete ALL parts of the task. 4. 9 Sam is my Amazing Wonder Dog. His silly tricks make me laugh out loud. In the morning, Sam leaps on my bed. He wiggles under my covers like a furry worm. Lickety-lick! He washes my toes with his tickly tongue. When I play the piano, Sam patiently listens. At the end of my song, Sam takes his turn. Plinkety, plink! He strikes the keys with his dancing paws. When Sam wants his dinner, he finds his dish. He bumps it across the floor like a racing soccer player. Thumpety-thump! Sam shoots his dish at my feet. Sam s favorite trick is hiding things. One day, Sam and I went to the beach with Mom. While Mom and I splashed in the foamy waves, Sam buried our shoes in the sugary sand. Mom and I dug hundreds of hopeful holes. We were like pirates searching for a hidden treasure. Sam barked and smiled a big doggy grin, but he did not give us one helpful hint. (If anyone finds a flip flop with funny flowers, Please send it to Sally Anne in Savannah.) Sam s best trick is being my finest friend. When I come home from school, Sam greets me at the door like I m a famous star. He shouts, Hello, hello, hello! with joyful barks. When I m afraid of the rumbling thunder, Sam lets me hug him tight like a teddy bear. He says, It s okay, by licking my ear. When I want to tell someone about my day, Sam has enough time for the longest story. He thumps his tail and says, I m listening. Sam is my Amazing Wonder Dog. He does not need to know any other tricks. Sally Anne calls Sam s actions tricks. Do you agree with her choice of words? Why or why not? Explain three ways Sam s tricks or actions help to make Sam a special friend to Sally Anne. Use transition words to move from one idea to the next. Use details from the text to support your answer.
