2 Editors Note T oday I woke up like this; Happier, more confident and content. Here I am in matric and every passing second draws me closer to the bigger world that awaits me, I won t lie, it sure does scare the bees out of me but I won t have that fear prevent me from living in the now. Remember to be gentler with yourselves; Eat all 3 meals, take more baths if you desire and allow yourself to feel more deeply. Forgive yourself. And adore yourself, weather a Poet, Dreamer, Outsider, Music maker or maybe just a Misfit, because; You belong! Xoxo Jessica

8 Huis Cherié; My Tweede huis. Juffrou, We see you, just as you see us; With the eyes of your heart. Dankie vir die ekstra Mamma liefdes! Xx Esca

18 OH SO EMBARRASSING!!! We asked you to share some of your most OH MY WORD crush stories and this is what you gave us! [ek dink hy t my gesien]...- Patsy We were at a party and someone told an absolutely pathetic joke, I,however, was the only one who found it funny, I laughed so much I accidentally farted. My crush was sitting right besides me!!!... I guess in the end it was all jokes on me.-sammy Ons was by n rusoord vir die naweek en onder een van hulle bome was daar n vrek mooi ou wat aan die slaap was. And he thinks we re the creeps because whenever he walks past us, we both make the weird gagging sounds- Yetti
19 We were at a little family get together and the guy who I m crushing on is a close family friend of ours. But anyway, there was a little stage where we could dance and go crazy, the only problem was that there were no stairs, the only way up was to climb a bust bin. 1. What s your favourite story about yourself? Nienke: Toe ek 3 jaar oud was, het my ma op my afgekom, toe ek besig was om my oom wat kanker gehad het se naels te cutex en hom te make up. Ian: My gunsteling storie oor myself, is dat ek nie Ian Hüsselmann sou wees, as ek nie oor die Here gepraat het nie. Hy is, was, en sal altyd my storie wees. 2. What misconceptions do people have about you? Nienke: Ek is bederf, want ek is die enigste kind. My kamer is altyd netjies. Name one thing that no one knows about you. Nienke: Ek lag in my slaap.
21 4. Best compliment you ve ever received? 5. What qualities do you think a head boy/girl should have? Nienke: Nederigheid en selfaanvaarding Ian: Uithouvermoë, geduld, respek en nederigheid. 6. Which song do you get stuck most often in your head? Nienke: Vuuevas. Ian: Beslis n lied van Riana Nell. [HaHa!] Interviewed by Jessica Mtsweni

24 Maggy She wears oversized Harry Potter sweaters, thick rimmed cat-eye shaped glasses and bounces about as if everything and everyone will know her name someday. She sits on deserted benches till 2am under silver umbrellas, Staining like white wine against the blue-black November midmorning sky. Her hearts buoyant serenades echo through the night, bringing the moon to her knees. She ll remind you of Summer; warm adventerous blithely. Her name is Maggy. She s a small city girl, young, passionate, incredibly alive and in love- In love with something bigger, than any person could ever be; She, loves the world. Jessica Mtsweni
26 I admit it. I am a readaholic. My sister and I had some sort of reading competition during the December Holidays, and one of the books which deeply touched my soul was Elanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell and seeing that the month of Love has arrived on our doorsteps, I see it as a fitting read to warm ones heart this Valentines day. Eleanor and Park- Rainbow Rowell E leanor- Comes from chaos and with her mismatched clothes and unruly red hair, couldn t stand out more, even if she tried not to. Park is the boy at the back of the bus. Black t-shirts, headphones, head in a book and thinks pretty much that he s invisible to everyone. Everyone but Eleanor. Eleanor is portrayed as insecure in the beginning of the novel, and continues to be throughout the entire novel, therefore it takes her quite a while to make some friends but when she finally does, they turn out to be accepting of who she is and incredible, Park being amongst one of them. Set in 1986, this deliriously beautiful love story also portrays both Eleanor and park as two individuals who each felt that they did not fit into the typical high school student mould. There are also deeper, darker, hard-hitting and powerful subjects regarding self esteem, bullying, poverty, domestic violence and vivid threats of abuse. The darkness is,
27 however, contrasted by the heart warming, passionful love building between these 16 year olds despite the mad chaotica around their lives. Eleanor and Park is one of those novels which you ll still be thinking about a month after you finish reading it. It ll leave you breathless, speechless, strangely happy and in love with Eleanor and Park s unlikely pairing. I d read it a gazillion times over again if I could! So if you ve never read it, RUN to the library or bookstore and get yourself a copy. It will most certainly be well worth your time! XX Jessica. Holding up the universe- Jenifer Niven Me before you- Jojo Moyes After you- Jojo Moyes Leota s Garden- Francine Rivers The Great Gatsby- Scott Fitzgerald
28 Study playlist. 1. Cry- Michael Ortega 2. Claire de Lune-Claude Debussy 3. River flows in you- Yiruma 4. Nuvole Bianche- Ludovico Einaudi 5. Inception- Micheal Ortega Jessica Mtsweni
29 The winter roars with chills The summer sighs with high temperatures But there is a time where I seem not to recognize the seasons A time when my heart melts down and turns red Matching with the dresses and Sunday suits in the community As I hold a rose which has no subject for the night, Like a bouncer in dry darkness I stand with eyes alerttrying to imagine the artistry that was meant to be in my presence But all I often see is how life paints the reality of things A chair reserved for a Zulu sunflower too beautiful for my metaphors to praise I will wait forever on this red day Crestfallen for your impossible return Your time is no more Nolthando A happy Valentines day to you indeed Theo Madubanyo
30 I bet you never knew... Language is remarkable. And in my opinion, there s nothing that beats the sheer joy of discovering a new word... 31 31 I ve only ever fallen in love twice in my life, with July and October. I met July in a bar when I was still 19 and naive, blinded by the walls that I d built behind the lenses of my thick rimmed glasses the walls that had become comfortable enough to call, home. He was sharp. Fast. Unpredictable. And dangerous. His eyes were backstreet ally s crowded by men in long black trench coats, broken vodka bottles, stale cigarette stubs and youngsters, roughly my age, that sang praises to an ageless night. I recklessly explored every single one of those dark alley ways, and sadly the journey left me cold, chewed up and spat out on a deserted concrete sideway street with broken stars in my eyes and a corrugated heart. The walls back home were even harder to jump over. They seemed higher, 5 storeys higher, at least, foreign and everything about them screamed in my face, at the top of their lungs that I, didn t belong there anymore. The climb back left me jaded with calloused hands, but that didn t matter because in that time being, I knew that I was safe again, in my sanctuary; ready to heal again; I was home. A while later I met October.
32 October held and cradled me when I cried and was too weak to fight the battles waging in the deepest parts of my being. He was compassionate. Affable. And incredibly alive. He smelt of honey and peppermint, loved holding hands, Twilight and waited patiently in book stores for me when I couldn t decide from which genre to pick. Being with him wasn t like anything else; I felt like Spring in full bloom. He was the type of guy who silently made you whisper to yourself before you went to bed every evening that, this one kiddo, might be the one With him, the scenery outside the guarded places behind my thick rimmed glasses felt familiar enough- safe enough to call, Home. Sadly the tides rolled in and the ocean called him home, he left me with nothing, but sand in my hair and a mouthful of words, because somewhere out there, was someone awaiting his homecoming...
