1 a script from The Mom Purse by Jenny Craiger What This humorous Reader s Theater pays tribute to moms by looking at the multitude of helpful things she always has handy in her purse, reminding us that mothers are always there to help us out with whatever we need. Themes: Mother s Day, Moms, Family, Women s Ministry Who Reader 1 Reader 2 Reader 3 Reader 4 Reader 5 When Wear (Props) Present Large Tacky Purse Spotlight (optional) Small stool or table Why 1 Thessalonians 2:7; Isaiah 49:15 How Readers can all be teens or a mix of young adults, teens and kids. The Readers stand in order in a semicircle around a small stool or table with a large purse in the center. A spotlight is used to highlight the purse after the first line is spoken (spotlight optional). Lines are spoken seriously and dramatically, especially at the beginning to enhance the humor, unless indicated in parenthesis. Actors should be sure to speak clearly and be careful not to rush the lines. While this is a reader s theater, there are 2 lines of spontaneous interaction and directions are provided. 2 Readers start on stage in the semicircle around a stool or table with a large purse. Reader 3: Today we honor you, Mom Purse. Turn on spotlight. Reader 1: An overlooked miracle bag of tricks. Reader 4: You are amazing. Reader 2: Inside, you carry the extra set of keys. Reader 5: The shopping coupon. Reader 1: The long-forgotten gift card lost in your dusty pockets. Reader 3: Made in all shapes and sizes, Reader 2: In an assortment of colors and materials. Reader 4: You convey security to those around you. Reader 5: No matter your style, Reader 3: You function to satisfy. Reader 5: Back-up glasses and screwdrivers are no obstacle for you. Reader 2: You carry enormous burdens in your stitched frame, Reader 1: To satisfy the wishes of needy children. Reader 4: Astoundingly, your depth has no end. Reader 1: A phone, Reader 2: A hair clip, Reader 3: A cue tip, Reader 4: A can opener. Reader 5: A dollar. Reader 3: It s all there. Reader 1: Got a hangnail? 2

3 Reader 2: Here s a file Reader 4: AND a pair of clippers. Reader 1: Bad breath? Reader 5: You ve got a mint. Reader 3: Possibly covered with lint, but we don t care. Reader 2: Runny nose? Reader 4: You re there with the solution. Reader 2: A clean tissue. Reader 4: (sheepishly, as an aside) Well, probably clean. Reader 3: Medical problem? No problem at all. Reader 1: A Band-Aid, Reader 5: Ibuprofen Reader 1: A tourniquet (Looks to the other actors, with surprise) Really? A tourniquet? Reader 5: (to Reader 1, shrugs) Hey, it happened! But, uh (Looks around embarrassed) I don t want to talk about it. Reader 1: (looks curious) Okaaaay. (Resumes reading in a deliberately skeptical and reluctant tone) A tourniquet. Reader 5: And uh the Nurse Helpline number. All Readers look at Reader 2 who shrugs and nods sheepishly. Readers look at one another, pondering and then resume reading. Reader 4: (clears throat is if to get back on track) We are bored waiting at the DMV. Reader 2: You have a book. Reader 3: A crayon. Reader 4: And Hot Wheels cars. Reader 3: Hunger strikes? 3

4 Reader 2: How about a granola bar? Reader 3: A banana. Reader 4: A Ziplock of Animal Crackers. Reader 1: Uh oh! Does something smell funny to you? Reader 5: A diaper and wipes. Reader 3: Deodorant too! Reader 2: Forgotten school supplies are no match for your prowess. Reader 4: Digging deep you produce scissors. Reader 1: A stapler. Reader 2: A pen. Reader 3: A pad of paper. Reader 1: No shade to be seen? Reader 5: Suntan lotion to the rescue. Reader 4: Cold instead? Reader 2: A warm pair of gloves are at the ready. Reader 3: You are a never-ending bag of tricks. Reader 2: An oasis of supplies. Reader 4: Dare we say it? Reader 3: If we dig far enough, we might even find the kitchen sink. Reader 1: Or at least a bottle of water. Reader 5: As great as you are, Mom Purse, we know you can t take all of the credit. Reader 1: Someone special packs you with care. Reader 3: And hauls you around, filled to the gills. Reader 4: Thank you fabulous Moms for always thinking of us! 4
