2 Introduction Homophones are two or more words having the same pronunciation, but different meanings & spellings - e.g. no & know; red & read; hair & hare; one & won; blue & blew; buy, by & buy; to, too & two etc. The list in this book is by no means exhaustive, and many far more complex words can be included in the activities for older learners who have a higher level of vocabulary/comprehension. You will find flash cards, vocabulary exercises and games that can be adapted to younger or older learners, and some blank cards to write your own. A fun exercise for children is to walk around the classroom or home/garden (in fact anywhere will do) and examine objects and establish whether or not a homophone of that object exists. Write down all the words that come to mind. It should be borne in mind that homophones are not restricted to nouns and/or verbs. Creating lists and matching them to pictures is also another exercise that young children enjoy; cutting and pasting pictures from a magazine or newspaper is also an effective exercise. These exercises are great for educator/learner interaction and can be included in many other grammatical or vocabulary lessons. Please observe adequate safety precautions when undertaking crafts, cutting, pasting or other similar activities that require the use of scissors, heat, small or sharp objects, paste, paint etc. Enjoy! 3 Parent/Educator Vocabulary Guide This book is appropriate to use with children of all ages and would ideally be best complemented with the use of other books in the Vocabulary/Grammar Series. How you share it will depend on the age of the child, the setting, and your personal way of instruction and explanation. You may wish to skip around informally or you may choose to complete each book individually, although many of the worksheets and exercises include the various parts of vocabulary this being done in order that the learner may differentiate between the various different forms of words. This guide suggests possible ways to use the book in a classroom setting. It would be useful to peruse the word lists and explanation of each grammar form; and then you might wish to add additional pieces of appropriate information when you pause to discuss children's questions or comments. Definitions and Descriptions Antonyms - An Antonym is a word that has a meaning opposite to that of another word. Example: Old is an antonym of new or young. Origin: From Greek, anti against. Contractions - A contraction is a collection normally two of words that are joined together i.e. shortened, by the use of an apostrophe e.g. he is -> he s; she will -> she ll; I have -> I ve Homonyms - Homonyms are Words that have the same spelling & pronunciation but different meanings, e.g. can and can; orange & orange; head & head; jam & jam. Very often the words will be both a verb and a noun.
