In the morning, the girls go to school. Kathryn goes to work. Before they leave, she and her children talk. Sometimes the youngest girl asks, Are you going to Space today Mom? Most days Kathryn answers no. But on December 2, 1994, Kathryn would have answered yes. On that day, she and her six crewmates blasted off in the spacecraft Endeavour. Their mission was to fix the Hubble Space Telescope. The Hubble had been in space for three years. It needed repairs. Before they could go, the astronauts had to get ready. A big part of getting ready was practicing. How did Kathryn and the other astronauts practice? First, they needed to learn what outer space feels like. They wore spacesuits underwater to learn how it will feel to work in space. They pretended to repair huge models of the Hubble in large underwater tanks. They practiced every move over and over. They practiced six or seven hours a day. That s about how long a spacewalk lasts. Finally, the spacecraft blasted off. When it reached the Hubble, the crew began their work. To repair the Hubble, they had to get out and walk in space. During the mission, Kathryn became the first woman to take more than one spacewalk. After eleven days, the mission was over. And it was successful. Today Hubble is a more useful telescope. It shows scientists more about outer space. 12
13 Kathryn s job as an astronaut is exciting. She has been to space three times. She walked in space five times. That is a world record for women! But for Kathryn, her most important job is at home. She tries to be there when her daughters need her. Are the girls proud to have an astronaut for a mom? To my kids, it s old hat, says Kathryn. Kathryn and her children miss each other when she s away. But, they don t have to wait eleven days to talk. On longer trips, astronauts can make short calls to their families. 16 Introduction: Design Your Own Mask Many people from all over the world enjoy making masks. They use masks when they have a celebration for special times like birthdays and holidays. Some masks look like animals. Some look like happy people. Others look like scary people. Think about a mask you could make. Here are directions for making your own mask. What You Will Need: A clean, one-gallon plastic milk jug Paper towels or a brown paper bag White glue Sandpaper Paint What to Do: Yarn, if desired Step 1: With an adult s help, cut off the spout of a clean, one-gallon milk jug. Cut the jug in half from the top to the bottom so that the handle is in the middle of one of the halves. The half with the handle will be the mask; the handle itself will be the nose. Step 2: With an adult s help, cut holes for the eyes and a hole for the mouth. Use sandpaper to smooth all rough edges of the mask. Step 3: Cover your work area. Tear paper towels or a brown paper bag into oneinch squares. Soak them for a few minutes in a bowl containing a half-andhalf mixture of white glue and water. Squeeze the excess glue from the pieces, one at a time, and place them on the mask. Cover the entire front of the mask and all of the edges. Let the mask dry completely. (It may take a day or two.) Step 4: Paint the mask and let it dry. After You Have Finished: You can hang the mask on a wall as a decoration or punch holes in the sides (with an adult s help), tie a piece of yarn to each hole, and wear the mask as part of a costume for a made-up drama. 16
