3 CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE Again I wonder at the commitment shown by the cast and crew in yet another production here at the Prospect Playhouse. In every production literally dozens of people in one way or another are involved. The cast, lighting, sound, props, director, producer, make-up, front-of-house, bar, waiters, wairesses, set-builders - the list goes on. All of these people give up their free time (and pinch some of their not so free time) in order that you, the public, can be entertained and we, the Cayman Drama Society, can continue doing what we like best. All of this is done for free. No payments, bonuses, perks or favours are granted. In fact, quite the reverse when one checks the bar bills during rehears'al times. It does great credit to the society of CaYman that there are so many people who are still willing to give up the time and have the confidence that they will be able to do it again. The CDS is a totally non-profit making group, any surplus monies are ploughed back into the theatre, our Scholarship Fund, and into subsidising productions that don't quite become box-office hits. So all the efforts of these folks who put so much time into this production are in fact, through your patronage, investing in the future. As you can see from this programme, Alan Hall makes a very welcome return as a director (and father figure to cast and crew alike) and with the splendid cast he has put together "Bedroom Farce" will I'm sure be a roaring success. So, to all you tourists and newcomers, sit back and enjoy the show, which I'm sure you will, and don't forget to tell your friends. 5 RAMBLINGS FROM THE MIND OF A DIRECTOR BY ALAN HALL Alan Ayckbourn is one of the most prolific of modern comedy writers for the stage. and has been referred to as "the English Neil Simon" although I suspect that he would r~fer to the latter as "the American Alan Ayckbourn"! All of his plays show an immense insight and understanding of the human character and demonstrate his ability to see the funny side of even the most dramatic and tragic situations. Much of the humour in his work comes from his uncanny knack of creating characters who are instantly recognisable to his audience. What is perhaps most amazing about the works of Alan Ayckbourn is that. although they were mainly written to be performed by the repertory theatre in the Northern English seaside town of Scarborough. many of them went on to be smash hits on the West End stage and are now presented by professional and amateur groups worldwide. This clearly indicates that comedy transcends all borders. which is fortunate for the multinational cast assembled tonight who have readily grasped all the nuances of Ayckbourn's wit (with only the occasional need for translation!) I should like to express my thanks to; -the whole cast who rallied round and clamoured for parts immediately I announced that I was to direct "Bedroom Farce". (sometimes Directors have difficulty in persuading actors to attend rehearsals, but this time they turned up even when not needed! ) -Maria Fisher and Nigel Girdlestone who can always be found around the theatre when a production is on, but have now taken on more demanding roles -John Elliott and Andrew Leggatt who have both rejoined our technical team after a few years rest -Drew West who is with us for the first time. but I suspect will soon become a permanent fixture around the Playhouse -Pamela West and Jacqueline Caunt who are experimenting with new positions -the army of unsung heroes who come along to help and "Share the Show" And so to bed..

8 MARLENE CLARE RILEY Over the past seven years, Marlene has become the most active member of the Society, not only on stage. but behind the scene In set construction and design and costume design From a german air hostess in "Boeing, Boeing" to Queen Elizabeth in "Dark Lady of the Sonnets", Marlene now takes her most arduous role, playing Ernest's wife. an every day event. Have an entertaining evening. PETER RILEY Peter has been a member of the Drama Society since 1986, and since that time has participated in every place within the playhouse, including behind the bar and in the kitchen. Last seen as the Vicar in "Mixed Doubles" he has taken a more restful role which can get e bit fishy. Hope you enjoy your evening. ANNA CUTLER After graduating trom threatre school in Perth, Western Australia:Anna traveled the world in search of life and experience and has now settled in the Cayman Islands. Her debut in Cayman was in the Playhouse production of "Easy Stages". BRYAN BOURDEAU Bryan is originally from Atlanta, Georgia. He began his career in entertainment in video production and film, working with notable clients like CNN, Coca Cola, America's Most wanted, Sony Music and Paramount Pictures, Discovery Channel and many others. He enjoys music, comedy and the live aspect of the theatre. This is his Cayman acting debut.

ROLAND STACEY Roland first appeared as Nick, the man with the bad back in 1985, he is delighted to have the opportunity to repeat this challenging role.

9 ROLAND STACEY Roland first appeared as Nick, the man with the bad back in 1985, he is delighted to have the opportunity to repeat this challenging role. You will understand the attractions of the part as the play unfolds. His numerous other appearances on stage of the Playhouse are not worth recounting. VANESSA RADFORD 'Ness' PHIL LINES Phil's first appeared on the Cayman drama scene in this year's pantomime as the bumbling Billy Goose His next role was the bumbling lover in "Norma", one of the short plays in 'Mixed Doubles'. He sees no reason to radically change his character as he attempts to act out the role as the bumbling husband, Trevor. Ness hails from Perth, Western Australia where she was a member of the independent drama school. Since leaving home she has traveled extensively and is currently enjoying Cayman. She is making her third appearance on the playhouse stage. GABRIELLE WHEATON Gabrielle's love of the theatre began at an early age and continued throughout her school years where she involved herself in as many productions as she could handle. Since joining CDS she has been seen in a variety of roles and looks forvvard to further ventures on and off stage.

13 THEATRE NEWS Many of you will have noticed the screened patio at the main entrance. Hopefully this will protect all you smokers who nip out for a drag from the nasty night-time bugs. It will also hopefully help us to leave open the main entrance doors to cater for the spill during the interval without allowing in a multidude of insects. It is the intention that sooner rather than later we cover the screen porch area with perspex which will give added protection from the elements. The kitchen (hopefully by the time you read this) will have been completed. It is a vast improvement on what was there originally and our thanks must go to the Bazelmans and the Collins for donating their surplus cabinets and to Pooley Cabinets who helped install them. It is still hoped that an extension be built to the West of the theatre in the near future. This will be used for the storage of flats and props in the lower area and the upper floor used for the storage of costumes and the like. Of course, funds are required for this and since we are a totally volunteer group every bit helps. As you can see from the Future Productions we still have a busy 12 months ahead and your patronage of these productions will go a long way towards improving this wonderful facility which is here purely and simply for peoples enjoyment.
