Leon Thomas, Damn Nam (Ain t Goin to Vietnam) (21 October 1969) You can call me crazy, but I ain t going to Vietnam, You can do what you wanna, but I ain t going to Vietnam, Cause it s a dirty, mean war and nobody seems to give a damn. They got boys up on the front line, and boys up on the back line too, They got boys up on the front line, and boys up on the back line too, They got so many weapons, what do they need with me and you? Lord, Lord, Lord, how can a man get a thrill? Won t somebody tell me, how is a man supposed to get a thrill? If he s gotta drop some napalm, and never see the guy he s gotta kill. How much does it cost to fly a man up to the Moon? How much does it cost to fly a man up to the Moon? When I think of the hungry children that I see every afternoon. So I m sitting here going crazy, but I ain t going to Vietnam, You can throw me in jail, but I ain t going to Vietnam, Cause it s a dirty, mean war and nobody seems to give a damn, No, no, no! 1 1

James Armstrong, Thank God, Calley Wasn t Black (28 March 1971) There was a young man named Calley, trying to make the army a career, Over there fighting and suffering, he finally had to kill in fear. While people over here trying to make a stand, Calley s being judged for a big command. ch: So hard, being prosecuted, thank God that Calley wasn t black. Mothers all over the country, even sisters and brothers, All have pity on Calley, and don t want his trial to go no further. He s got a small chance of being free, But thank God Almighty he s not black like me. sp: Oh, yes! All right now! I wonder what the outcome would be, if I was in Calley s place, Would the world be concerned about me, or would they just turn their face? What I got to say, it s a known fact: Thank God Almighty Calley wasn t black. 2 2

Percy Mayfield, I Don t Want To Be the President (1974) Well, now, I m not a big politician. Hell, I don t wanna be! Why, I wouldn t be the president, if the whole world voted for me. They say I d have to get permission to be alone to think, Or to have to have my cognac tasted, before I could take a drink. No, no, no, no, partner, that s not the role for me to play, heh, heh, heh, no, To be watched in all of my happenings, big man, I couldn t stand that for a day. No, no! Now, just suppose I had a girlfriend and called her and she lived way across the lake, Why, Congress would know the whole conversation, cause, you see, they d have it on tape. Then they d put me on the television, to tell the whole world my private life, Hell, I wouldn t mind the people knowing, man, but what about my wife? No, no, no, no, partner, partner, that s not on my mind, I say, no, no, no, no, partner, being the prez is not on my mind, heh! Cause to do four years and never private, seems to me too much like doing time, doing time. sp: There you go! Soloing! Now, like today, for instance, what s happening? Energy shortage and all that stuff, Why it s cheaper eating money than food right now, Dad, but you still wouldn t get enough. And now the White House telling people, when to sleep and when to play, When to eat and how to cook it, now, Dad, you think I could do it that way? Huh! No, partner, that s not for me; No, no, no, no, partner, presidency I don t want to be, heh, heh, heh, no! Ah, but if I run for mayor in my hometown, I want all you all to vote for me, vote for me. Hey, heh! Mayor Mayfield, wouldn t that be a gas? Mayor in my own home town! Heh, heh, heh, heh! I m just playing, Your Highness. Just jiving! 3 3

Larry Shannon Hargrove, Leave Bill Clinton Alone (3 November 1998) sp: Hey, baby! Ha! Ooh! Hey, Larry, I sure like your band, can I play in your band, man? Hey, Bill, put your sax on and come on, on stage. Let s go. Here we go, Bill! Huh! ch: You need to leave Bill Clinton alone, cause everybody s done something wrong, You just don t like him cause he wear dark-eyed glasses and play a saxophone. sp: Ha, listen to this: He fixed the economy, showed us all how to turn a dime into a dollar, don t you see? He s doing a damned good job of running this country. Kenneth Starr, pull up on my President, Cause you don t have nothing to show for all our money you spent, All this investigating ain t nothing but (straight up) player hating, And I don t know why you just don t: sp: Ha, ha, listen to this: His best friend is a black man, named Vernon Jordan, Oh, but I beg your pardon, Cause his executive secretary is a black lady named Betty Curry, And I like that now! sp: Come here, Bill Clinton, I want you to play your saxophone for me. Ooh! Come on, Bill, play it now. That s real good. But, Mr. President, come here, play it like you like it, Bill. Don t worry, Bill, I got you backed. Play it, Bill! OK, band, I want you to go to work right here. Hit it, Mr. President, come on! sp: Play it Bill, come on, hit it! Play it, Bill! Monica Lewinsky, Paula Jones, here s what I want you to do: I want you to leave him alone! Everybody listen! sp: Kenneth Starr, You ve gone too far, You see, that s between Bill and Hillary. sp: Play it Mr. President! Secret Service! Would you come and take the President back to Air Force One? He s got a country to run. That s enough, Bill, I know you like that song. Oh, my, my, my! 4

sp: Larry, I sure like your band! Larry, you think I can play with your band some time? sp: Bill, you can play with my band any time, guy! Come on, Mr. President, that s enough. Y all go in and take him home now. 4 5

Sunny Ridell, Hey Osama! (25 September 2001) Hey, Osama, a camel was your daddy and a sheep was your mama, You won t stand up like a man, You re hiding in a cave in Afghanistan. ch: I said, hey, Osama, You can t hide forever, Osama, We re coming after you, Osama. Hey, Osama, you messed with Uncle Sam, now you re gonna be a goner, A package coming Special D., Direct to you from the NYC. We don t want your father or your mother, We don t want your cousin or your brother, Osama, we just want you, And all other people that are helping you too. I said, hey Osama, you shamed your daddy and disgraced your mama, Osama, what you gonna do? We got your number, it s B-52. Hey, Osama, you think you re smart, but not for long, Mohammed looked you in your face, He said: You fool, you re such a disgrace! I said, hey, Osama, your turban too tight, man you s a loser, Your master plan s come to a pass, Now the USA s gonna kick your. sp: Osama, we gonna find you, no matter where you re at, no matter how far you go, We gonna find you, you can t outrun the USA. We re coming to get you, Osama, B-52s and everything! 5 6

Leslie Isaiah Gaines, Obama Drama Blues (2008) Leslie Isaiah Gaines, the Godfather of Justice: America is ready for a fresh new change: Obama is his name! America is ready for a fresh new change: Obama is his name! Now I like Hill and I like Bill, but Bill ain t Hill and Hill ain t Bill, For Obama to win this historic race, he s got to get over the Billary hill. Now, I don t think it s fair. For Obama to have to run against a pair. They double-teamed Obama, By injecting the race drama. Obama won Iowa and Billary couldn t keep pace, So to try to win South Carolina the Clintons resorted to race. To inject the name of Dr. King and the name of Jesse Jackson, Insulted the people of South Carolina, because they were a multi-racial faction. The good people of South Carolina, white, brown, red, yellow and black, Rejected Billary s old-time tactics and said: Obama, we got your back. Now, Bill Clinton was a cool President, some even thought he was a brother, Because he blew the saxophone and knew how to dance, and thought he was a lover. But don t let Bill s cool song and dance, Rob Obama of his chance. Billary says Obama is too young, without enough experience, But you don t have to be old and cynical to have good common sense. In 1960 there was a bright shining star who had a vision he could lead this nation, Because he was young and Catholic some thought it was just a figment of his imagination. He had a goal that Americans would go to the Moon and return home safely again, Though he served just a short moment, he guaranteed civil rights for all men. Billary s divisive tactics have pitted husbands against wives, The decision we make in this election will affect us for the rest of our lives. Should race have any place in the 2008 race? Let your conscience decide, When you lay down at night, at the end of the fight, make sure right is on your side. America is ready for a fresh new change: Obama is his name! America is ready for a fresh new change: Obama is his name! 7

Vote your conscience! Vote for your children! Vote for your grandchildren! Vote for change! 6 8
