2 Synopsis Nicolas, a bright, curious boy of twelve, lives in a village by the sea. His father, who was a fisherman like his grandfather, died in a fishing accident two years earlier, and Nicolas, along with his older sister, is being raised by his widowed mother. Nicolas loves baseball. Every day during vacation he and his friends meet at the town s old baseball field to play their favourite game... Until one infamous day at the start of summer when Nicolas discovers that the gates to the field have been locked and that old boards and assorted junk are strewn across what used to be the baseball diamond. It seems the town council has decided to use the grounds as a dump. The kids are outraged. They decide to contest this decision, to defend their territory. They designate Nicolas as their leader and they become "outlaws". Other youngsters (boys and girls, French and Englishspeaking, Amerindians, Asians, Blacks, Whites, etc.) gradually sign on to the struggle. Nicolas will quickly learn the hard lessons that being a leader entails. And to deal with his grandfather, Jeremy. The old man was on board the trawler with Nicolas dad during the fateful storm and he never recovered. He sank into depression and alcohol. But now, watching his grandson, he remembers his own days playing baseball. Slowly, he gets involved, he takes sides. The side of the village kids in their delightful, often uproarious struggle to preserve their playground and freedom... and to learn about life in the process. 3

4 Director s note Director s biography Born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec in 1947, Jean Beaudry was an actor and a theatre director before getting his first screen directing credit, together with Fr ançois Bouvier, in The film was Jacques et Novembre. Beaudry played the title role and edited the film as well. It was an auspicious debut, winning prizes at home and abroad. Directing the 24 th Tale for All, (my third after The Case of the Witch Who Wasn t, 1990, and The Clean Machine, 1992) was going to be quite an adventure. This time, with a dozen young actors ages 6 to 14, most getting their first experience on the camera, half from the Montreal region and the rest from New Brunswick where we were on location, I knew that filming would not be easy. But what happened was something of a small miracle. After a first day of work, I could feel that the kids had already formed a group... a gang. And it proved contagious for the whole crew. Actors are sponges of emotion, especially novices. I believe that everything that happens off camera ends up on the screen. The work was intense, sometimes difficult, sometimes great fun. And I will always remember the scene between Nicolas and his grandfather when I was moved to tears. I said to myself, this is why I do this job... to bring this emotion to the screen. Jean Beaudry Beaudr y s second film, Unfaithful Mornings (1989), also co-directed with Bouvier, earned similar plaudits. Beaudry followed with two films in the Tales for All collection, The Case of the Witch Who Wasn t, 1990, and The Clean Machine, Three years later he directed his fifth feature, The Cry of the Night. In 2011, his novel, L amer Atlantique, was published by Éditions Triptyque. The Outlaw League is his 3rd Tale for All. 6 7

7 Nicolas André Kasper Nicolas, 12, the story s hero, is a sensitive boy who loves baseball; it reminds him of his missing father. Good-natured but determined, he becomes the leader of his gang. With their help and by rallying the town to their cause, he defies the mayoress and manages to rescue the local baseball field from its fate as a garbage dump. Jeremy Guy Thauvette Jeremy, a fisherman in his late sixties, is Nicolas grandfather, devastated by the accidental drowning of his son, Nicolas dad. But he loves his grandson and does not hesitate to stand behind the boy in the struggle to save the baseball field. The support is reciprocal; Nicolas example inspires Jeremy to climb out of his alcoholic funk. Tiger Charles Gillespie Tiger, 13. A tough kid, hair slicked, stylish and cool. His name is Ricky but he insists on Tiger. Older and bigger than Nicolas, he is a strong second mate. The mother Marie-Jo Thério The mother, in her early forties, is Nicolas mother. A fisherman s widow, she has stopped mourning her husband and resumed her life with strength and courage. She lives alone with Nicolas and her 17-year-old daughter, Cecile. 13
