1 Film:ReStored_01 First Film Heritage Festival of the Deutsche Kinemathek The Deutsche Kinemathek is organizing and hosting the film heritage festival Film:ReStored for the first time. From September 22-25, 2016 in Berlin, the festival will dedicate itself to transferring German film heritage into the digital age, highlighted by public premieres of digitalized films including some that have also been restored, a corresponding conference and a children s program. Film Program For four days - from September 22-25, the Deutsche Kinemathek s film heritage festival Film:ReStored_01 will present public film screenings, offering the opportunity to experience the digital premieres of a treasure trove of cinema from six decades of German film history. The festival opens on September 22nd, launched by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, Prof. Monika Grütters, and with the opening film KAMERADSCHAFT (DE/F, 1931, directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst). Berlin, August 2, 2016 Deutsche Kinemathek - Museum für Film und Fernsehen Potsdamer Str Berlin, Germany T +49 (0) F +49 (0) info@ deutsche-kinemathek.de Conference The film screenings are accompanied by a conference on September 23 24, Technical, ethical and aesthetic questions, which are raised by the digitization of historical films, will be addressed in lectures, panels and workshop discussions. This year a main focus of the discussions is the status and the preservation of (analog) originals after digitization. Taking reproducibility as a characteristic feature of the film medium into consideration, for the future it must still be clarified which media formats can be regarded as originals and how they should be treated as archival objects and/or as references for further duplication. National and international experts will report on their experiences with digital restoration and the archiving of historical films in Germany, France, Sweden and the USA. Different approaches have been put into practice and formulating stable criteria for a sustainable digital policy with regard to film heritage is one of the biggest cultural challenges of our times. Press Office hbzapke@ deutsche-kinemathek.de T +49 (0) Children s Program On Sunday, September 25, 2016, the Mini Film Club of the Deutsches Filmmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, will make a guest appearance, offering children 5+ a creative workshop based on the animated film SPIEL MIT STEINEN (AT, 1965, directed by Jan Švankmajer; film and workshop in German). The film presentation that follows, SABINE KLEIST, 7 JAHRE (GDR, 1982, directed by Helmut Dziuba; with English subtitles), is recommended for children 8+.
