3 August 6, 2014 By Patrick Healy Side Show Revival Sets Broadway Opening A new revival of the 1997 musical Side Show, about the real-life conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton, will come to Broadway this fall, starting preview performances on Oct. 28 at the St. James Theater and opening on Nov. 17, the producers said on Wednesday. The show is transferring from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where it ran through mid- July; the move to Broadway has been in the works since the revival opened to strong reviews this summer. The Broadway run will star Erin Davie and Emily Padgett as Violet and Daisy from the Washington run; the lead producer is Darren Bagert (Off Broadway s Buyer & Cellar ). The Broadway production will cost about $7.8 million, according to a spokesman for the producers a fairly typical amount for a musical the size of Side Show. The revival s weekly running costs are expected to be about $539,000, not including royalty payments, according to the spokesman. A spokesman for the Kennedy Center said on Wednesday that the organization is not putting in additional funds for the Broadway run. Whether ticket sales will be enough to cover weekly running costs is a major challenge for every Broadway show, and the big question for Side Show is whether it will fare better than the original production, which ran for only three and a half months and closed at a loss. That production struggled to attract audiences for its early 20th-century tale of the grim lives of the Hilton sisters, who became a popular circus act that was a spectacle for gawkers. The production also faced stiff competition from other musicals that opened that fall and winter, including The Lion King, Ragtime and a revival of This fall s revival will face the new musicals The Last Ship (with songs by Sting) and Honeymoon in Vegas as well as another revival, On the Town. While Side Show has undergone extensive changes since 1997 with the addition and subtraction of several songs, and substantial rewrites to the book the story is still darker than the latest popular draws on Broadway, like Aladdin and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. But Side Show remains admired by critics, and the producers are hoping for strong reviews to help generate ticket sales. The musical s score is by Henry Krieger (music) and Bill Russell (lyrics), with the book by Mr. Russell and additional material by Bill Condon, who is also the revival s director. 4 August 6, 2014 By Allan Kozinn As Usual, Unusual Offerings From the Kitchen The Kitchen will present a performance of John Zorn s collected Game Pieces, classic scores from the 1970s in which improvisation is governed by sets of rules, as the final event in its fall 2014 season of experimental music, dance, theater, film and art offerings. The season opens with the United States premiere of Mäusebunker, a film with live dance by Lothar Hempel, that presents a parallel universe in which only women exist (Sept. 5-6). Other dance performances include the world premiere of Dean Moss s johnbrown, a look at the legacy of the 19th-century abolitionist (Oct ). The Kitchen s musical programs includes an installment of Synth Nights, the house s electronic music series, in which the Berlin composer Laurel Halo will present new works (Sept. 9). Mr. Zorn s Game Pieces will be performed by Dither, an electric guitar quartet, on Dec. 13. Other highlights include Bruno Latour s Gaïa Global Circus, a look at humans apparent ambivalence toward global warming (Sept ), and The Measure of All Things, which the Kitchen is calling a live documentary by the filmmaker Sam Green (Nov ), that offers portraits of Guinness world-record holders accompanied by a live score. The full schedule and tickets are available at thekitchen.org. Correction: August 6, 2014 An earlier version of this post, using information from the Kitchen, misstated the date of the performance of John Zorn's "Game Pieces." It is Dec. 13, not New Year's Eve. 5 August 6, 2014 Renovation Plan Sends Irish Rep s Season to a Temporary Home By Robin Pogrebin The Irish Repertory Theater has started renovating its home in the Stanwick Building on West 22nd Street in Manhattan and entered the final phase of its $13 million capital campaign. Designed by Garrison Architects of New York, the renovation will increase the theater s seating to 150 from 137; add a 40-seat balcony; and create a new second-floor rehearsal studio visible from the street. Our number-one goal is to keep on doing what we do, only better, said Charlotte Moore, the company s artistic director, in a statement. Because of the renovation, Irish Rep s coming 27th season will be presented at the DR2 Theater on East 15th Street near Union Square. The first three productions are a revival of Conor McPherson s Port Authority ; A Christmas Memory, based on the Truman Capote short story; and Hugh Leonard s play, Da. Construction is expected to be completed in More than $10 million, or about 80 percent, of the project s cost has been raised, funds that will also go toward expenses incurred by the temporary relocation and operating support upon the company s return. 6 August 7, 2014 Perfidy Afoot in a Doomed Parking Lot Outdoor Othello, From the Drilling Company By Ken Jaworowski There are so many things working against Othello at Shakespeare in the Parking Lot that it s a minor miracle that the show comes together so well. Traffic noise, funky smells and a few fumbled lines plagued one recent performance. Even so, by the end, there was more than a little magic in the air. To be sure, some of that magic may have been the early onset of nostalgia. After 20 seasons, this free series will be forced off its asphalt stage on the Lower East Side when the lot is closed and redeveloped. Though the Drilling Company, the producing troupe, has promised to find a new home for the program, this strange and shabby location will be terribly missed. Othello, that bold case study in jealousy and manipulation, begins with little confidence here. As the title character appears, he and those around him are tentative and unsteady. Chemistry is at a minimum, and timing often misfires. It can seem that a long night is in store. But then the scheming speeds up. Iago unleashes his deceitful plan to destroy the Moor, and that tension sharpens the skills of the 11-member cast. What had been shaky becomes solid; those double-crossing scenes between Iago and Othello, which are chock-full of innuendo and treachery, are deftly acted here. Hamilton Clancy, as Iago, hides his bile behind a calm face, egging on his superior officer with a delicious false innocence. It s a smart, stout performance by this actor, who also directed. Aaron Scott, as Othello, passes up chances to put his own stamp on the character, trading nuance for a loud voice to overcome the outdoor din. Still, his speech is clear and sturdy, and he s always easy to follow. Ivory Aquino s Desdemona exudes affection, while Michael William Bernstein as Roderigo, Lukas Raphael as Cassio, and Jane Bradley as Emilia find several nice moments in their roles; Ms. Bradley, in particular, stands out in her valiant closing scene. At almost two and a half intermissionless hours, Othello moves remarkably fast after hitting its stride. This ensemble s final production earns the applause it gets from the diverse crowd it attracts. After 20 years the troupe also deserves an ovation for all the audiences it has inspired. Othello continues through Aug. 16 at the municipal parking lot, Ludlow and Broome Streets, Lower East Side; shakespeareintheparkinglot.com.
