1 Lone Wolf Tribe CONTACT Kevin Augustine 138 South Oxford St. Brooklyn NY lonewolftribe.com Project Budget Grant Request $36,400 $7,000 PAST GRANTS AWARDED 2015 Seed - BULLHEAD 2013 Project - The God Projekt 2012 Seed - The God Projekt 2010 Project - Hobo Grunt Cycle 2006 Project - Bride 2005 Seed - Bride 2003 Project - Animal 2002 Seed (1k) - Animal 501 (c)(3): The Field BODY CONCERT BODY CONCERT is LWT's newest work- a hybrid solo dance/puppet piece exquisitely bringing to life oversized body parts within a hauntingly romantic music score. Eschewing any traditional sense of story and character (a first for LWT), BODY CONCERT is a wordless, tender meditation on the ephemeral beauty of life performed by Kevin Augustine in a graceful and physically extreme Solo Bunraku technique. VIDEO SAMPLE Title: BODY CONCERT (in process) - June 2016 Artists: Kevin Augustine - director/creator/performer Description: A duet excerpt between the ARM & LEG. Augustine's costume is as yet incomplete, but evident is his mask (which allows both presence/invisibility) and his solo Bunraku technique of using his feet and hands. The music is by Dustin O'Halloran. PRODUCTION
2 The Jim Henson Foundation 2017 application from Kevin Augustine s Lone Wolf Tribe Lone Wolf Tribe seeks a PRODUCTION GRANT from the Jim Henson Foundation for its newest work, BODY CONCERT, created by Kevin Augustine (two years in the making so far). With an early workshop showing at the Micro Festival in Canada hosted by Les SAGES FOUS, and invited back by Les SAGES FOUS to present the full production in 2017, LWT will finish the creation of the full-length piece after our La MaMa commitment in October. We are reaching out to JACK and Irondale Theatre in Brooklyn to present the 2017 NY premiere. We are also exploring a Co-Production with Nordland Visual Theatre in Norway. Influenced by Japanese Butho dance, this hybrid work brings LWT's exquisitely sculpted foam-rubber puppets uniquely to life in a hauntingly romantic movement piece. Eschewing any traditional sense of story or character (a first for LWT), BODY CONCERT is a wordless, tender meditation on the ephemeral beauty of life performed amid a textured sonic background (live & pre-recorded), including a bittersweet piano score by Dustin O'Halloran, whose music has become "a singularly serene presence in a world full of noise". Performed as a succession of physical vignettes (under 60 min total), oversized body parts stripped of their skin become a moving sculpture of muscles, tendons and bones, achingly animated in an extremely rigorous choreography. Reducing the traditional Bunraku technique of 3 puppeteers down to a single performer, Augustine's spectacle embraces a pure minimalism as he puppeteers solo, using his hands, toes & outstretched legs. In this unique animation style, Augustine (wearing a custom made, mostly neutral mask, with his body airbrushed black), propels himself slowly over the stage (seated & prostrate) via a contoured aqua-plast-body-mold (designed by Broadway props maker, Ashley Stevens). Embedded with multiple omni-directional casters, Augustine will be capable of executing subtle, graceful and continual puppet movement, having a sometimes invisible stage presence, while other times directly showcasing the physical demands of such a technique, bodily emphasizing ambition and limitation. Without over intellectualizing what this piece is about, several universal themes are surfacing: struggle/triumph, connection/separation, longing/renewal. The artistic ambition of BODY CONCERT is to allow audiences their own personal interpretation as the piece unfolds. Some of the tenderly grotesque images to be brought to life include a legless torso walking on antique prosthetic limbs; a disembodied hand gliding on top of a rolling skull; a sightless child floating amid snowflakes; a quivering leg caressed and comforted by a detached arm, looking for a partner. With help from the Lion King s puppet maestro, Ilya Vett, small motors are incorporated within some of the BODY CONCERT puppets to allow muscles and tendons to peel away like flower petals, highlighting quivering moments of vulnerable connection. Through collaboration with lighting designer Derek Van Heel, Butoh artist and choreographer Yoshiko Usami, and a projection designer (TBA), BODY CONCERT will create a hauntingly evocative landscape of shifting ripples of light and shadow combined with scenic elements of smoke, vapor and snowfall. Utilizing projection light as a primary illumination source, this lush and stark environment will transform the playing space while interacting with the intricate puppet/dance choreography. Yoshiko will be a primary collaborator to especially help with Augustine s transitions between puppetry sequences. The minimalist piano score by O'Halloran, (with Tibetan chanting and other audio elements to weave throughout) will act as a sonic foundation and blend with live solo accompaniment. LWT plans an experimental collaboration with 3 separate solo musicians (violin, piano, cello) to accompany different nights of the eventual performances. Of great importance will be the interplay between silence & sound within the relationships of the live musicians, the prerecorded landscape and the puppets with Augustine s silent character. Embracing a primal physicality over the purely rational, BODY CONCERT is Lone Wolf Tribe s bold new performance art piece, fully expressing the company's mission to investigate, challenge and spellbind by venturing to the edges of theatrical form and the human experience. We respectfully request the financial assistance of the Jim Henson Foundation to help launch this work. We believe this will be our best touring production for speaking to international audiences while not even saying a word.!
