2 SYNOPSIS Journey into a dark night of the soul as this psychological thriller keeps you guessing right up until the final unsettling twist. Em is a young woman under pressure, hurtling through the night on the road to nowhere. Someone is out to kill her, but who? The hedonistic Doby, out of his mind and partying hard? The judicious Brian grappling with some disturbing news? Is it the enigmatic Lous? Or the child alone on the windswept beach? When their lives intersect, no one is prepared for the chaos. Lost Soul is a powerful, mesmerising, profoundly unsettling journey deep into the mind.

3 FROM THE WRITER / DIRECTOR DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY The alchemy involved in taking a nugget of an idea and working with it over a few years brings out magical qualities along the way. Joel Betts is a Melbourne based cinematographer with a passion for creative storytelling through pictures. He has worked diligently over the years towards the betterment of his craft. Including an intensive year of cinematography study at the prestigious Australian Film Television and Radio School. Initially set in a single room, the story could have been a play in another writer s hands, it opened out into a feature film screenplay, before discovering it was more suited to a series. And then with another process of distillation, Lost Soul became a short. Joel prides himself on being able to work across multiple camera platforms. From high end commercials to intimate personal projects, Joel demands the highest standards from his gear and crew, pushing the boundaries of creativity to construct edgy pictures that resonate and engage. One with every challenge I could set myself, including finding a director of photography to harness the cinematic locations and the intimacy of nuanced performances from our diverse cast. Those luminous images and a brooding original score would form the emotional architecture for a journey through a dark night of the soul. TONY ROGERS Tony Rogers is a writer, director and producer known for his deadpan comedy. He joined Sarah as a Producer on Lost Soul bringing together a talented group of creative collaborators. The scale and complexity of the Lost Soul project appealed to Joel from the outset, as did Sarah s vision for the film. It was a unique opportunity to showcase his hard earned technical skills as well as the magic of his visual artistry. Working closely with Sarah in pre-production, they meticulously planned how to maximise their locations and their light. Preparation that ensured the freedom to really go for it on the day. SARAH HATHERLEY After a stellar career writing and directing brand films, Sarah has developed a body of work - feature film screenplays & published children s books - all with a trademark glimmer of light emerging out of a dark, often funny, truth. She has a slate of film projects ready to go, including features, The Lifesaver and Eternity. Her award winning first short Just Do It was an audience favourite. Tony and Sarah share the same passion for independent filmmaking, the same relentless pursuit of the truth in storytelling, but a completely different skill set. It was a powerful combination. I ve known Sarah for many years and have always admired her take on the world. She is destined to make special things. That s why I am there to help. She is an intelligent filmmaker, who is bound to surprise us. Tony Rogers THE MAKING OF LOST SOUL It was an ambitious script for an independently funded short film. From the coast to the city, to the suburbs and the mountains, Lost Soul was always going to require meticulous planning to pull off Director Sarah Hatherley s vision of a cinematic gem. Tony Roger s network of talented film technicians and suppliers was critical. In particular his ability to secure a very special camera kit from Lemac. Having previously shot exclusively on film, it had taken Hatherley a long time to get over the soullessness of early digital. Shooting with the Alexa XT & Cooke anamorphic lenses was a revelation, an absolute joy. Best known as co-creator and director of the hit series Wilfred (2007 & 2011) for Australian network SBS, the Wilfred format was sold to FX in the US where it is now into series four. Tony has also made the feature film Rats and Cats (2007) as well as a parody web series How to Talk Australians (2014). And the recent web comedy series Bruce (2016). THE EDITOR The widely respected and creative editor, Tim Parrington from The Butchery, had his work cut out for him on Lost Soul. It was a highly crafted script that required skillful weaving together of each character s storylines, building the tension, while working with sound design and visual effects to create an affecting piece. His years of experience with documentaries, shorts, features and brand work meant Tim always had an elegant solution to any seeming impasse.

4 AMELIA BISHOP Part of the Q44 theatre ensemble, Amelia Bishop started her training at 16th Street Acting Studio in Melbourne in And combined with extensive travel through France and the UK, has since trained at the Melbourne Actor s Lab. Apart from sharing an uncanny resemblance to Violetta, who had already been cast as The Child, Amelia brought a subtlety and depth to the central character EM. With a dissolving sense of reality, Em s emotional state becomes progressively unstable. The script being largely stripped of dialogue, meant Amelia had the challenge of communicating her character s struggle through performance. Strength and vulnerability seesaw precariously throughout in a riveting display. TIMOTHY BELL With over 40 years of experience in television and film, Tim Bell has displayed his versatility, portraying a wide range of characters in works as diverse as Evil Angels, Mission Impossible, Blue Heelers, Bed of Roses, MDA, Killing Time, Hawke, Fat Tony, Twenty Something, Rush, Tangle, The Slap, It s a Date, Upper Middle Bogan and other Australian classics. Tim brought a sober and forbidding quality to the censorious role of BRIAN. As the brains of the group, Brian was never going to be happy with how things were panning out, and Tim captured his growing frustration. DAVID SHIRE David s ability to deliver a nuanced performance as the hedonistic yet tormented DOBY was evident right from the casting. In a challenging role, he exhibited great maturity and professionalism. Originally from Perth, Western Australia, David Shire started acting in stage productions from the age of eleven. He later appeared alongside Danny Green in the Australian Cowards Punch ad campaign, and more recently enjoyed a role in the comical Set Yourself Free viral video which has received over 20 million views on YouTube. In 2015 David moved to Melbourne to pursue his passion for acting and studied at TAFTA under the guidance of John Orcsik. VIOLETTA CAPANNI At the age of seven, Violetta Capanni was the perfect age to play THE CHILD. She was also the ideal temperament. Curious, fearless, and playful, one moment. Vulnerable or angry the next. Violetta naturally embodied the capricious nature of THE CHILD. Never having been on set before, and being cast in a key role was a leap of faith for everyone. But as a friend of the Capanni family, Sarah Hatherley was well known to Violetta and had filmed family snippets over the years. The key to success was keeping the process spontaneous and intriguing. Happily Violetta remained very natural throughout and gained a newfound confidence with the positive feedback and support from the rest of the cast and crew. KAREN DAY Karen brought a calm, still quality to the enigmatic LOUS, and provided the ideal counterbalance to the conflict whirling around her. Based in Melbourne and trained with master drama teacher Lindy Davies, Karen Day has worked across film, television and theatre, including the critically acclaimed and Green Room award nominated production of Fool For Love. Her credits include MDA, Nightmares and Dreamscapes: the stories of Stephen King, Stingers, Blue Heelers, The Man From Snowy River. Plus award winning short films: Smoko The Chop-Chop Diaries, The Best Man and Toombaworth. Other theatre credits: The Visit, The Emotional Anatomy of a Relationship Breakdown.
