Promotional signage along the BeltLine will alert visitors about the performance and increase anticipation in the weeks leading up to the show. I am requesting to perform the weekend of October 5th-7th, with a rain date the following weekend. This is based on artist availability. My requested performance location is at Monroe Drive. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Park Cofield & Co. (Producing Company) is a fictitious monster hunting company that will stage the spectacle event. The company has previously worked together to present two performances on the BeltLine-- SEE THE GYRASTACUS (2010) and The Ogre s Arm (2011). This year s team is comprised of eight performers, including two child actors, two puppeteers and two musicians. The performers will be selected from a pool of local artists. The puppet effects (slides, mystery boxes, and marionettes) will be designed and built by local craftsmen. A production stage manager will run all rehearsals, and serve as the main contact for the BeltLine staff. A lighting designer will be hired to built battery operated lamps and oversee all lighting tests and effects. This project will be developed collaboratively by means of a written script and a week of improvisation. Music pieces will be commissioned in advance and provided to the performers over the summer. Park Cofield (Project Director) is an Atlanta/Los Angeles based theater director and puppet builder. He creates vivid theatrical productions, original puppets shows, and collaborative spectacle events in Atlanta. He is the artistic director of an ensemble of artists who perform and assemble as Park Cofield & Company. His original work has been commissioned by the Center for Puppetry Arts (The Frightful Musicians, The Ill-Fated Balloonists), Art on the Atlanta BeltLine (2010 and 2011), and Théâtre du Rêve (The Red Balloon). He has designed and built puppets for Georgia Shakespeare (Tom Thumb), Haverty Marionettes (As I Lay Dying), and the Oakhurst Community Garden. Park also works in opera. He recently stage directed The Atlanta Opera s first commission, Rabbit Tales, a touring opera for children based on the stories of Joel Chandler Harris. Park has a degree in theater studies from Emerson College and has traveled extensively in Europe where he studied and trained with Eugenio Barba and the Odin Teatret. In 2011, Park was awarded the Altvater Fellowship with Cornerstone Theater Company and relocated to Los Angeles. There he helped to produce the inaugural event of the company s upcoming Hunger Cycle-- a series of six plays dedicated to food and hunger issues. He is currently continuing to explore community engaged performance and is working on a new project about school justice in Sacramento, CA. This spring, Park will assistant direct a new opera called Crescent City with The Industry, a new company exploring the idea of hyperopera in Los Angeles. For more information about Park s work and the latest updates about the work he is creating, please visit:

WORK SAMPLES: Samples of my work and resume can be found at: Videos of my work can be found at: Clips from my 2010 Art on the BeltLine performance: SEE THE GYRASTACUS-- MATERIALS: Scenic Elements The performance will take place under an overpass. The main performance space will be a stage in the bed of a pick-up truck. The truck will be positioned against one of the walls of the bridge with stairs on the front as an access point. Ropes will be used to designate a space for the audience. Spectators will be encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. Sound The performance will include live music-- including string, wind, and percussion instruments. I do not intend to amplify the sound. I am counting on the echo of the concrete walls. As needed, the performers will use cone shaped megaphones, whistles, bells, and gongs. Lighting The performers will be illuminated by the headlights of other cars. Slides and images will be projected onto the walls with a battery operated halogen lamps. 6 Art on the Beltline Proposal 2012 PROJECT NARRATIVE As a compliment to the natural landscape of the beltline walkway, we propose to construct two serial plane sculptural works that transform the winding passageway into a unique focal point that provides an unexpected serene visual experience for Beltline visitors. The two monolithic forms set on a carpet of colored glass landscape material are composed of flat serial planes arra nged with contrasting sharp and soft curves and concaved and convex edges to create spatial volume, mimic motion, and ascend to an average height of eight to ten feet. The forms will provide visual contrast to the natural herbaceous environment that encompasses the Beltline to create and opportunity for patrons to pause and observe the simple geometry of the sculptures juxtapose against the serene beauty of the urban pathway. The submitted image represents the visual potential of the forms that will be i n the sculpture. Illustrating scale and alluding to process but it is not an exact representation of the final form. An exact model will be generated if our proposal is accepted and awarded. Page 1 of 4 Art on the Beltline proposal 2012

12 Wire frame figure with jointed legs that move with the pedals Broadside view PRIMARY WINDMILL WIND Side view Axis to turn into the wind Hinges for figurine s leg movements SECONDARY WINDMILLS (4 each) 12 The secondary windmills spin with the wind, but are simpler in construction and do not drive a chain/cranks. GROUND LEVEL 5-gallon bucket, filled with concrete, placed below ground level (other mounting options possible) Galvanized pole driven into the ground LOCATION The primary requirement for my location is that it needs to be windy. And the simplest installation would be to hang each windmill from a tall structure (large tree, bridge, or cable running between structures, etc.). But since suitable structures are often not in open and breezy areas, I made alternative plans for erecting a support post(s). I live in Reynoldstown and it would be easy for me to maintain and service the project if it was nearby, such as just south of Kirkwood Avenue or at Wylie Street. Both those locations are relatively open, on high ground with good breezes. And we can t forget the audience Reynoldstown and the surrounding neighborhoods have a large community of cycling enthusiasts who live, work, and ride around the area. Locating the project close to a heavily used cycling corridor, such as Wylie Street, is ideal. However, I am open to other locations, and can split the project up if requested, hanging the smaller secondary windmills in scattered locations (or omitting the secondary windmills altogether). CONSTRUCTION AND INSTALLATION All the component pieces of the project will be designed and built off site in my backyard. And since no individual component of the project is especially heavy or bulky, it can be easily transported to the site.

14 ABOUT THE ARIST Dr. Alex Rodriguez has lived in the Reynoldstown neighborhood of Atlanta since As a practicing dentist, he has no formal art training, but as evidenced by his choice of profession, he does have an exceptional understanding of structural engineering and technical beauty, with the ability to create long-lasting works with his hands. Dr. Rodriguez has always been interested in mechanical objects and has a special appreciation for the beauty of simple machines, especially the bicycle. During college he worked as a mechanic in a bicycle shop ( ), learning the complex intricacies of how a bicycle works. And his experience with the University of Florida s cycling team, including being the team president from , got him involved in designing and racing custom bicycles. After dental school, Dr. Rodriguez moved to Atlanta to start his career. He settled in the Reynoldstown neighborhood specifically because of the relative ease which he can get around by bicycle (as well as its proximity to the Beltline), because he still commutes by bicycle. PREVIOUS WORKS Dr. Rodriguez began creating works from used bicycle parts around 15 years ago. His initial works were static pieces, such as tables built from bicycle wheels. But in 2006, he began experimenting with kinetic pieces driven by the wind, and to date has created eight different types of bicycle-inspired windmills. Each piece has been designed different from the other, providing valuable lessons on how various design elements make an impact, such as the shape and number of the windmill blades, accounting for the gyroscopic effect, and designing it to survive thunderstorms. Such experimentation and trial-and-error has expanded the types of projects he wants to build. Tables Above, cocktail table. Brass base with a tempered glass top, supported by a mountain bike wheel. Right, picnic table centerpiece. This whimsical nod to Marcel Duchamp spins easily from the slightest breeze.
