2 Recorder Etiquette Agreement 1. Your recorder should LIVE in your backpack when not being used to be certain the recorder is not forgotten or lost. 2. Your recorder must only be played in the music classroom (with permission) or at home. Any playing in the hallway, general classroom, or school bus will result in the recorder being kept in the music classroom. 3. Your recorder should not be used as a whistle, as a weapon, or as any purposeful annoyance (such as painful, high-pitched overblowing). Recorders will be taken away if used in this manner. 4. Your recorder should be kept in one piece except for when it is being cleaned. Some parents wash their child s recorder periodically in the dishwasher, but warm tap water helps to keep it clean as well. 5. Buying a recorder is not required. There are several recorders in the music room that students can borrow. Students who borrow a recorder will be assigned a recorder number, and only that child will use that particular recorder for the entire trimester. The recorders to be borrowed have been disinfected with recorder cleaner. The borrowed recorders may be taken home. Students who lose their borrowed recorder must pay $6 to replace it. 6. If a student chooses to buy a recorder, the recorder is his/her s to keep forever. However, students must remember to bring their personal recorder to school every day, OR they can leave their recorder in the music room to avoid forgetting it. _ I (student agree to follow the recorder etiquette rules above and understand that if I do not follow the rules that I will accept the consequences listed above. 4 How to Play the Recorder Posture Sit on the front edge of your chair. Place your feet flat on the floor. Keep your back straight. Hand Position Place your left thumb on the single hole on the back of the recorder. Place your left index (pointer) finger on the 1st hole on the front of the recorder. Keep your thumb and wrist straight. Keep your fingers curved. Pinch the bottom of the recorder for songs that only require left hand movement. For songs that require right hand movement, place your thumb on the back of the recorder between the 4th and 5th holes. Lips Place the mouthpiece on your lower lip and bring your upper lip down on top of the mouthpiece as if you are saying DU. Your teeth should not touch the mouthpiece. Breathing Blow soft, steady air into the opening at the top of the recorder. Imagine you are blowing into a straw to create small bubbles in a glass of milk. Try to keep your air stream going for 10 seconds. Articulation Articulation refers to how your start each note. You will always use your tongue to articulate (start) each note. Move tongue forward and back as if you are saying DU. You should feel your tongue hit the roof of your mouth just behind your front teeth. Care Keep your recorder in its case when you are not using it. After playing, dry the inside of your recorder using a swab. You may wash your recorder in warm, soapy water. Be sure to rinse it well. ~ 4 ~
5 Music Staff How to Read Music Treble Clef A music staff has 5 lines and 4 spaces. A treble clef sign is placed at the beginning of the music staff. It tells you that G is on the second line of the staff. Space Notes Line Notes ~ 5 ~
