1 1 PRESS RELEASE THURSDAY 16 NOVEMBER Announcing January to July 2018 at the Orange Tree Theatre A world premiere, European premiere, 3 London premieres and a major contemporary revival form the second half of Artistic Director Paul Miller s fourth season. Since taking over in 2014, the Orange Tree has won 18 industry awards, most recently London s Most Welcoming Theatre at the UK Theatre Awards The first major revival of Charlotte Jones Humble Boy since its National Theatre premiere is directed by Paul Miller. The world premiere of Mayfly by Joe White, who was part of the OT Writers Collective in , is directed by Guy Jones. The European premiere of the Yale Drama Prize-winning play Utility by Emily Schwend is directed by Caitlin McLeod, following the play s critically acclaimed run in New York in Following their success at the Edinburgh Fringe and on a national tour Paines Plough bring three new plays directed by James Grieve from the Roundabout season to play in repertoire in a co-production with the Orange Tree and Theatr Clwyd. Black Mountain by Brad Birch, Out Of Love by Elinor Cook and How To Be A Kid by Sarah McDonald-Hughes. Hasan Dixon, Katie Elin-Salt and Sally Messham appear in all three. An Octoroon by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins transfers to the National Theatre in a coproduction in June following its acclaimed European premiere at the Orange Tree directed by Ned Bennett. Following its sell out UK premiere run at the Orange Tree, Winter Solstice by Roland Schimmelpfennig will embark on a UK tour from February in our co-production with ATC. Our annual Directors Festival will feature the work of the Orange Tree s MA in Theatre Directing with St Mary s University. Last year s inaugural Festival produced hugely successful productions, including the London premiere of David Ireland s The End of Hope, directed by Max Elton, which transferred to Soho Theatre for an acclaimed fiveweek run.

2 2 The incredibly popular 12 under 30s tickets as well as other concessions continue to be available for all performances to make theatre affordable and accessible at any time. Over 3,000 under 30s came to the OT in the 2016/17 season. Our Education & Participation Programme, which works with more than 10,000 participants every year, features Shakespeare Up Close: Romeo and Juliet for secondary school students, directed by Gemma Fairlie, and Primary Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice directed by Imogen Bond, which alone plays to over 4,000 children. The OT Young Company will perform Alice Birch s new play [BLANK] as part of National Theatre Connections, after being selected to perform Alistair McDowall s Zero for the Young Dudes! in the Oliver in this year s Festival. There are relaxed performances for Mayfly, How To Be A Kid, Romeo & Juliet and The Merchant of Venice, and Stagetext captioned performances and audiodescribed performances for most productions. OT Extras a popular series of performances of the best music, theatre and spoken word includes singers Claire Martin and Clive Rowe, Colin Hoult as his comic character Anna Mann, and Tim Crouch in his Obie Award-winning international hit An Oak Tree. Paul Miller, Artistic Director, says: I am so proud that the Orange Tree is bursting with life as a year-round producing theatre, staging a wide-ranging programme in our unique space, engaging thousands of young people and reaching out to the world via tours and transfers. The 2016/17 season was our most successful to date and these plays will top off the 2017/18 season in high style just as An Octoroon takes to the National Theatre. As a theatre operating without regular Arts Council investment, these successes are shared with the individuals, charitable trusts and businesses that support the OT, and to whom we are hugely thankful. 4 4 Black Mountain is a tense psychological thriller about betrayal and forgiveness by winner of the 2016 Harold Pinter Commission Brad Birch, whose play The Brink premiered at the Orange Tree in He has had work produced by the Royal Court, Sherman Cymru, Theatre503 and the National Youth Theatre. His plays have been performed in Russia, the USA, Italy, Germany and Spain and his 2013 show Gardening: For the Unfulfilled and Alienated won a Scotsman Edinburgh Fringe First. A Paines Plough, Orange Tree Theatre & Theatr Clwyd co-production Out Of Love A NEW PLAY BY ELINOR COOK Lorna and Grace do everything together. They share crisps, cigarettes and crushes. That s what happens when you re best friends forever. But when Lorna gets a place at University, and Grace gets pregnant, they suddenly find themselves in starkly different worlds. Can anything bridge the gap between them? A tale of friendship, love and rivalry over thirty years from award-winning playwright Elinor Cook, winner of the George Devine Award 2013 for Most Promising Playwright. Her plays include Pilgrims (HighTide/The Yard), Image of An Unknown Woman (Gate Theatre); The Girls Guide to Saving the World (HighTide); The Boy Preference (National Theatre Connections), and This Is Where We Got to When You Came In (Bush Theatre). She adapted Mac Barnett s Extra Yarn for the Orange Tree in A Paines Plough, Orange Tree Theatre & Theatr Clwyd co-production How To Be A Kid A NEW PLAY BY SARAH McDONALD-HUGHES Molly cooks. Molly does the dishes. Molly gets her little brother Joe ready for school. Molly is only 12, but she doesn t feel much like a kid anymore. Now Molly s Mum is feeling better, maybe things will get back to normal. Can you help Molly learn how to be a kid again? I ll be fine. Fine. At least those bastard bees are gone. Felix Humble is drawn back to his family home after the death of his father, a biology teacher and amateur beekeeper. There in the garden he finds his waspish mother Flora, her downtrodden friend Mercy and suspiciously ever-present local businessman George Pye, whose daughter Rosie was once involved with Felix. A luncheon is arranged Felix is an astrophysicist who discovers that solving the riddle of his emotional life is considerably more challenging than the quest for a unified string theory. Charlotte Jones witty family comedy won the Critics Circle Best New Play Award following its premiere at the National Theatre in Her other plays include Airswimming (BAC), Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis (Bolton Octagon, Critics Circle Award for Most Promising Playwright), In Flame (Bush/West End), The Dark (Donmar Warehouse) and The Lightning Play (Almeida). She created and wrote the recent ITV series The Halcyon. She has written extensively for BBC Radio 4, twice being nominated for a Sony Award. A family searches for new beginnings: Ben thinks they might be better off without him, but his wife Cat has read her stars: Today a very special person will appear from out the blue.

8 8 Their daughter Loops is getting ready for a date. It s her first one, and she has everything crossed. People think that cos you re from a small village, everyone will know you. But we can still go missing. Even out here. An ethereal family drama, Joe White s debut play Mayfly explores rebirth in the aftermath of tragedy. Joe White is an alumnus of the Orange Tree Writers Collective. He has also been the Channel 4 Playwright on Attachment at Pentabus Theatre Company and member of the Old Vic 12. Guy Jones is Literary Associate at the Orange Tree and has been an Associate Artist of Company Three. His directing credits include Spokesong (Finborough Theatre). 9 9 EUROPEAN PREMIERE 1 JUNE 7 JULY PRESS NIGHT: TUE 5 JUNE 7.00pm An Orange Tree Theatre production Utility BY EMILY SCHWEND Director Caitlin McLeod Like I gotta lose just about everything I used to like about myself just so I can keep shit even halfway decent for everyone else around here. Amber is juggling two nearly full-time jobs and three kids. Her on-again, off-again husband Chris is eternally optimistic and charming as hell, but rarely employed. The house is falling apart and Amber has an eight-year old s birthday party to plan. As Amber struggles to keep things from boiling over, she is forced to confront reality she is a stranger to the person she once was and the person she thought she might be. Emily Schwend won the Yale Drama Prize 2016 for Utility with judge, playwright Nicholas Wright saying Utility is a remarkable play: beautifully written and effortlessly powerful. This is the European premiere of the work of one of America s most exciting emerging playwrights. Emily Schwend is originally from Texas and currently based in Massachusetts. Her plays include The Other Thing, Take Me Back, South of Settling, Splinters, Route One, Carthage and Behind the Motel. Utility was first produced by Amoralists Theatre Company at Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre, New York City, in She is a Radcliffe Institute Fellow at Harvard University. Caitlin McLeod is Artistic Director of new writing company The Coterie (originally funded by a Sky Academy Scholarship) and was one of the original Old Vic 12. She has directed A Further Education by Will Mortimer (Hampstead); Brenda by EV Crowe (HighTide Festival/The Yard); Polar Bears by Amy Rosenthal (West Yorkshire Playhouse); The Malcontent (Shakespeare s Globe); CommonWealth (Almeida); One Flea Spare and And I And Silence by Naomi Wallace in New York; and the European premiere of Facts by Arthur Miller (Finborough).

Whether you re part of a group or an individual, there are plenty of ways you can discover more about our productions, be inspired and learn new skills. You could take part in a practical workshop on one of our productions; explore how we work in the round; or become a member of one of our regular participatory groups. Each year we welcome around 10,000 people taking part in our exciting range of Education and Participation projects. Within formal education, we work with everyone from Primary school children, to Masters Degree students, but we also encourage members of our local community of all ages, to come and take part in the activities we offer. A world of postcode street fights, catcalling and bants. In the middle of this a boy gatecrashes a fancy party and falls in love (for at least the second time that week). But this girl is different. She doesn t want to hear his cheesy lines and she s not interested in his moves. They realise that they are the best and the worst thing that could ever have happened to each other. They fall in love. And the world comes crashing down. Six actors fuse physical theatre with Shakespeare s sparkling words in a fast-paced 90 minutes. Director Gemma Fairlie returns to the OT to recreate her hit production of Shakespeare s darkest love story. SUN 8 APR 7.00pm NATIONAL THEATRE CONNECTIONS [BLANK] A NEW PLAY BY ALICE BIRCH This is a play about children and adults. Except the adults aren t really around. This is a play about parents and prison. And their children in the outside world. And having to be ok. This is a play about children needing to be adults. The Orange Tree Young Company presents [BLANK] by Alice Birch as part of the National Theatre Connections Festival It will also be playing at our Connections partner theatre, Lyric Hammersmith, at the end of May. This will be the sixth year that the Orange Tree Theatre has taken part in NT Connections. Last year, our production of Zero for the Young Dudes! was selected to play in the Olivier at the National Theatre.
