5 MONDAY 16 MARCH TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 11 _ Great Irish Journeys With Martha Kearney Monday 16 March BBC One Northern Ireland, 7.30pm NEW Broadcaster and journalist Martha Kearney follows in the footsteps of Irish artist and geologist, George Victor Du Noyer, in a new four-part series exploring the places that Du Noyer visited and captured so wonderfully in sketch and paint. Great Irish Journeys with Martha Kearney retraces the artist s 35-year odyssey of travel and ordnance survey work, and unlocks the story of Ireland s hidden landscapes and Du Noyer s unique record of how the country looked during the early 19 th century a period of huge change. In constructed walks to the four corners of the island, the series also reveals the intrinsic relationship between the people and the land (something that Du Noyer was the first to document) and charts the changes facing modern Ireland today. Episode one takes viewers to the mountains, bogland and coast, and introduces us to Du Noyer s work. In episode two, Martha travels north, taking in the extraordinary beauty of Dunluce Castle, Co Antrim, and onwards to Mussenden Temple, Co Londonderry. She also marvels at how Belfast was shaped by the Victorians and visits Kearney Point on the Ards Peninsula. Episode three visits places of power from ancient times through to the end of the Victorian period, including the Rock of Cashel, Co Tipperary and the magnificent Castletown House, Co Kildare. In her final journey, Martha looks at how remote landscapes provided opportunities for Ireland s spiritual side to blossom and explores the Blasket Islands off the coast of Kerry and the islands of the Fermanagh Lakelands White Island, Boa Island and the renowned Station Island. AW The Irish Rock Story: A Tale of Two Cities Monday 16 March BBC One Northern Ireland, 9pm NEW This film tells the story of how rock music helped to change Ireland. The 40-year-old story of Irish rock and pop music is grounded in the very different musical traditions of the two main cities of the island, Belfast and Dublin. This 60-minute musical celebration charts the lives and careers of some of the biggest selling acts in Irish rock, punk and pop from Van Morrison and Thin Lizzy to The Undertones and U2. From the pioneers of the showbands touring in the late 50s through to the modern day, the hour-long film examines their lineage and connections and how the hard-core, rocking sound of Belfast merged with the more melodic, folky Dublin tradition to form what we now recognise as Irish rock and pop. The film explores where these bands and musicians came from and the influence the political, social and cultural environments of the day had on them and how the music influenced those environments. With contributions from many of the heavyweights of Irish rock and pop, including U2, Sinead O Connor and Bob Geldof, it follows their careers as they forged an international presence, and, looks at how they helped change the island along the way. The Irish Rock Story: A Tale of Two Cities is a co-production between BBC Northern Ireland, BBC Four and RTE. It will be broadcast on BBC One Northern Ireland on Monday, March 16 at 9pm. (It will

6 be broadcast first on BBC Four on Friday, March 13 at 9.00pm). It will be broadcast on RTE One on Thursday, March 19 at 10.15pm BBC Music NI sees the BBC in Northern Ireland support the broadcaster s strongest commitment to music in 30 years. As part of the BBC Music initiative, BBC Northern Ireland will play its part in shaping sustained music output alongside a wave of new programmes, innovative partnerships and ground-breaking music initiatives. These are designed to strengthen the BBC s position as a world leader in music broadcasting and commissioning, and to enhance the UK s position as a world leader in music creation and performance. BBC Music launched in October 2014 with the very first broadcast of a musical moment across all channels - God Only Knows, an extraordinary reworking of The Beach Boys' classic. There are three core areas of activity: Emerging Talent - including Ten Pieces and Young Musician of The Year Digital - developing BBC Playlister and curated collections on the BBC iplayer, and Landmark Programming - across TV and Radio BBC Music NI will also be offering audiences the chance to see a range of documentaries and live performances from BBC Northern Ireland s rich musical archive. bbc.co.uk/music is now the established home for BBC Music, Playlister and music clips from BBC Radio & Television. A huge range of visual music content is now curated on the iplayer. KMC An Coláiste Éireannach NEW Monday 16 March BBC Two NI, 10pm Across a 40 year period at the end of the 16th century, 34 Irish colleges were established in Europe as part of a resistance against the Reformation, in defence of Ireland s culture. These colleges were created to educate priests, but they quickly became hubs of activity and useful contact points for a migrant Irish population not to mention the home of much political intrigue. And many of them had a profound effect on cultural aspects of Irish life the Irish colleges were important centres for the writing of Irish history and the preservation of Ireland s rich cultural traditions. In this series Gaelic scholar Dr Art Hughes examines the story behind four of the most important Irish colleges Salamanca, Paris, Leuven and Rome. Each of these colleges had a deep impact on Irish life, culture and history. In the Belgian town of Leuven the first printed text used in Ireland for the Gaelic language was developed and the first Irish dictionary and book of Irish grammar were published. To this day the Leuven typeface is a key part of the Irish language. Irish dictionaries were also published in Paris, and in Rome Franciscan priest Luke Wadding was responsible for the establishment of what we now know as St Patrick s Day. Art Hughes visits each of these colleges, plus one in Salamanca in Spain, meeting historians and experts who cast light on important historical and cultural roles played by the people who settled there after leaving Ireland. An Coláiste Éireannach was made by Tern Television with funding from Northern Ireland Screen s Irish Language Broadcast Fund (An Ciste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge) for BBC Northern Ireland. The series was produced and directed by Keith O Grady and Executive Produced by Karen Kirby for the BBC and by Brendan Hughes of Tern Television. MD
