3 Music on Sea - Who we are Music on Sea is the strategic lead organisation for the Southend Music Service and Southend Music Education Hub. Music on Sea supports you to deliver high quality teaching and learning for your pupils, offering a range of services and products. We invite you to look at our services and discover how together we can give the children and young people of Southend on Sea an exciting and fulfilling musical education. Music on Sea performs all Core and Extension roles as set out by Arts Council England. These roles underpin all planning and musical activity that we offer. Core roles of Music on Sea: 1 ) Ensure that every child aged five to 18 has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through whole-class ensemble teaching programmes. 2) Provide opportunities to play in ensembles and to perform from an early stage. 3) Ensure that clear progression routes are available and affordable to all young people. 4) Develop a singing strategy to ensure that every pupil is singing regularly and that choirs and other vocal ensembles are available in the area. Extension roles of Music on Sea: A) Offer Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to school staff, particularly in supporting schools to deliver music in the curriculum. B) Provide an instrument loan service, with discounts or free provision for those on low incomes. C) Provide access to large scale and/or high quality music experiences for pupils, working with professional musicians and/or venues. This may include undertaking work to publicise the opportunities available to schools, parents/carers and students. 4

5 Instrumental Teaching Music on Sea serves all schools promoting high quality music education both in the curriculum and through individual and small group instrumental and vocal teaching. What do we offer? High quality individual and small group tuition from specialist music teachers with appropriate safeguarding and DBS checks A mentoring programme developed in partnership with Trinity College to support tutors through lesson observation and performance management leading to continued professional development (CPD) Full range of instruments and styles taught Fully accountable service who communicate with schools, parents, teachers and our management team Teaching tailored to the needs and aspirations of each student Access to a variety of music examination routes including ABRSM and Trinity College, London What does it cost? 15 minute individual lesson costs 7.50 per student per week 20 minute individual lesson costs per student per week 30 minute individual lesson costs per student per week All lessons are based on a minimum package of 10 weeks per term. Schools may agree more weeks in advance. Lessons are invoiced on a termly basis to the school. Is there any financial support available? Schools should have published their policy on providing some financial support for Looked After Children or those who have registered and are eligible for Free School Meals/Pupil Premium. For those ineligible to access school support, Music on Sea provides a bursary for families in hardship, subject to successful application. To qualify for this financial support the school must send us a copy of the Music on Sea bursary form that is available on Is there any financial support available? Additional capacity to run after school music clubs, school bands, orchestras and groups, including rock and pop 5

6 Instrument Hire Music on Sea have many musical instruments available to hire for students learning within Southend or to Southend schools. What do we offer? All students attending a Southend school are able to hire an instrument from Music on Sea. What does it cost? Instrument hire is currently charged at per term. Each instrument is loaned for a minimum of a term and the parent will be charged, via invoice, on a termly basis. Schools can borrow individual or sets of instruments free of charge (depending on availability) for a term at a time for use in class lessons and school musical activities on the condition that they remain on school premises at all times. Is there any financial support available? Free hire is available to those: in receipt of Free School Meals or Pupil Premium Grant learners with a statement of Special Educational Needs or EHCP young carers Looked After Children 6

7 Whole Class Ensemble Teaching A core requirement of the National Plan for Music Education is that every child should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through whole class ensemble teaching (WCET). WCET projects are led by high-quality music teachers who will develop musical skills that can be applied in National Curriculum music lessons. For some this may be the start of a life-long hobby or, indeed, the first step on a rewarding career path. What do we offer? A one term programme of free tuition to an identified primary class/year group during the academic year is available through the First Access Programme The ability to extend provision further funded by the school A minimum of 10 weeks of tuition Free whole class instrument loan Free online Music Curriculum resource (Charanga) and Music on Sea support National Curriculum Music delivery Links to wider performance opportunities including Southend Makes Music CPD opportunity for teachers What do I do if I m interested? 8 Charanga Online Music Resource Charanga Musical School is an award winning primary music resource which is being used by primary schools across Southend. What does Charanga offer? A cloud-based resource that brings together great music, modern pedagogy and the latest educational technology It supports all aspects of music in school including the new music curriculum and is in line with published Ofsted guidance It provides teachers with week-by-week lesson support for each year group in the school. It is ideal for specialist and non-specialist teachers and provides lesson plans, assessment, clear progression and engaging and exciting whiteboard resources to support every lesson It provides children and their families with opportunities to continue learning and exploring music at home through Music World It includes individual access for as many teachers in your school as you would like plus access for all children to Music World online learning What does it cost and how do I access it? Charanga is fully funded by Music on Sea and available for all infant, junior, primary and special schools in Southend. Charanga VIP is available free to all secondary schools in Southend on application. Regular training sessions are held termly for new and existing teachers. 9 Singing Strategy for Schools in Southend The benefits of singing are countless: a pastime and therapeutic outlet, a way to entertain and a useful educational tool. It brings us together, invigorates us, helps us to relax and is hugely beneficial for the development of language and reading. Music on Sea is strongly committed to supporting singing across the Borough of Southend. Our aim is to raise the profile and regularity of singing in schools and to support, create and signpost more opportunities for students, and people of all ages and abilities within the community to come together and take part in quality vocal experiences. In 2011, the Department for Education published its National Music Plan for Music with an emphasis on the importance of providing students with the opportunity to sing regularly. Schools are now required to have their own singing strategy built into their music development plan. Music on Sea is supporting schools in the creation of a Singing Strategy which will encourage regular commitment to singing from students and staff members alike. 10 Ensembles Ensembles are an important part of learning to play a musical instrument and are often the most enjoyable and socially rewarding part of the process. Music on Sea aims to provide a musical pathway for all its young players for every stage of learning. We are accredited to Children's University Southend and validated to stamp passports. What do we offer? Music on Sea currently offers the following ensembles across Southend with more being added year on year. 11 Events Music on Sea provides access to large scale and high quality music experiences for students, working with professional musicians and venues. Our showcase event is the Southend Makes Music concert series. Schools are given the opportunity to perform at the Palace Theatre, Westcliff. Southend Makes Music 2018 Monday 26th February to Friday 2nd March at the Palace Theatre.
