Racial Harmony Day The theme for this year s Racial Harmony Day commemoration is Diversity Our Strength. Since the founding of modern Singapore in 1819, we have always been an immigrant community that has tapped on the strength of our differences in the pursuit of a common goal to make Singapore our home. These narratives of our forefathers that reflect a strong sense of purpose and drive remain relevant to us today as we celebrate diversity. This year, we engaged Rhythm Masala group to perform Multi-Racial Drumming during assembly. Rhythm Masala is a group of multi-racial drummers playing multi-cultural drums such as the Chinese lion drum, gong, Malay Kompang, Indian Bangara drums, tabla and Western drums. The students were intrigued by the performance and they had a better understanding of Singapore s art and cultural heritage. They learnt about the music culture of the various ethnic groups. There was also an hour of traditional food and games at the Sports Hall during extended recess. Students sampled food such as putu mayam, otah, muah-chee, ice-lollies and nonya kueh. Traditional games such as the goli and dog & bone were played to give the students a glimpse of the games that were played in the past. There was also a henna-painting booth and a craft-making session was conducted at the library. To deepen inter-racial understanding among the students, lessons were carried out during Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) lessons. To commemorate this day, staff and students also came to school in their unique and enchanting ethnic costumes. Page 01
Teachers Day 2018 Over the weeks, the students worked very hard at rehearsing for the Teachers Day concert and their efforts certainly paid off. Their love and gratitude for their teachers were evident as the teachers were treated to a feast of music, dance and song during the concert. The students, touched by the love and dedication of the teachers, offered heart-warming tributes to their teachers. The audience was also kept on their toes with a game organised by the prefects. A recording of a teacher s voice was played and the audience had to guess who the teacher was. This fun-filled activity left the audience roaring with laughter and certainly put the teachers in a celebratory mood. Page 02
Learning Journey to MILO Factory & Nestlé Research and Development Centre (Primary 1) This August, our Primary One students went for their Health Education learning journey to the Nestlé Factory & Nestlé Research and Development Centre in Jurong. During the tour, they learnt more about nutrition, how to make wise choices at breakfast and the importance of having regular physical activities. The students also got a glimpse of the MILO filling/packing production line which makes the learning journey an eye-opening experience. Students Reflections I had a fun and an exciting time at the Milo factory. - Gwen Lee, 1SY I learnt how MILO was made. - Christianne Cheong, 1C I learnt the history of Milo. - Suri Tan, 1G I enjoyed learning about the plants that are used to make Milo. - Keira Chay, 1P The most interesting part about the learning journey was when we guessed how many seeds there were in a cocoa fruit! - Avril Chan, 1GR I realised that the staff at the Milo factory work very hard every day - Lauren Kang, 1SE Page 03
Art in Transit Learning Journey (Primary 2) The Primary 2 students went on a learning journey in August to experience art beyond a museum and gallery. The tour introduced our students to site-specific artworks in a dynamic and unique setting. They were exposed to Circle Line Art installations by Singaporean artists as well as given precious insights into the history of the community where the stations are located. They also had the wonderful experience of taking public transport with their friends. It was a fruitful and enriching learning journey for them! Students Reflections The artworks were amazing! - Emma Yeo Kai Yun, 2SY I enjoyed taking the MRT with my friends and learning about the different artworks at the MRT stations. - Tara Elizabeth Gill, 2C My favourite Art piece was the Art installation named Dreams in Social Cosmic Odyssey at the Promenade Station because it made me feel like I was in a different world! - Kristen Wong, 2G I enjoyed looking at the different artworks at the MRT stations. - Heather Quah Yi Ning, 2SE I like The Sign of Times at the Paya Lebar Station because I could guess what the pictures meant. - Emily Ong, 2P There was an artwork that showed a goalkeeper trying to catch a ball and a soccer player in action. - Wang Xinyue. 2GR Page 04
Singapore Symphony Orchestra Music Excursion (Primary 6) The Primary 6 students spent a day behind-the-scenes with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) in May at the Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. They watched the SSO in action during a rehearsal. The main objective of the music excursion was to educate the students on concert etiquette, learn about how an orchestra prepares for a concert and the history and design of the Victoria Concert Hall through the tours. It provided the students with an opportunity to appreciate how an orchestra rehearses and be engaged in a hands-on music making activity with their peers. Students Reflections I learnt that one has to work hard to overcome his mistakes and not to give up. During the open rehearsal, the performers made mistakes but they thought of ways to fix the errors. - Anaikha Advani, 6SY I learnt that even if one can play an instrument well, it will not be as good as when someone plays it with passion. We need to have passion for the music to play it well. - Emily Hope Chong Yong Xin, 6C During the concert, the musicians played together in unity. They worked together as a team in order to make the music beautiful. - Isabelle Tee Wearn Way, 6G I learnt that concert hall was similar to an echo chamber. When the orchestra plays, the audience will be able to hear the music loudly and clearly. - Regan Ling Jing Cui, 6SE I learnt to appreciate classical music just like how I appreciate popular music. - Yeow Shi En Anna, 6P Page 05
