The winner of our CBBA Corporate Sponsorship Campaign is Clay Austin! Congratulations Clay and ank you all for your work in getting us ideas. Huge shout out to Katy Akridge who has been truly outstanding in is organizing is critical project for our program. Bear Band Parents & Students Mr. Lonberger Needs Your Help. In a few short weeks we will begin to recruit for next year s 6 grade beginning band class. Do you know a friend in e 5 grade who you ink would LOVE being in band? Go ahead and start talking to em about being part of e Bear Band Team for next year! Help us spread e word to e Cherokee Bluff community at our Bear Band is awesome and ey should join e fun! Please see Mr. Lonberger for oer ways you can help. FROM THE DIRECTORS LGPE = Large Group Performance Evaluation The Georgia Music Educators Association operates an annual evaluation for bands each year. It is e equivalent of an end of course test or final exam. Groups are evaluated by a panel of

2 experts. Our district hires college directors, advanced high school directors, composers, or professional performers as an evaluation panel. The structure is as follows: Three evaluators listen to e stage performance and rate it based on established criteria (tone quality, intonation, rhym, interpretation, balance/blend, and artistry). Ratings are basically modeled on letter grades: I = A II = B III=C IV=D V=F The ree ratings are averaged, so a I-I-II would average as a I or a I-II-II averages a II. In addition each group must play a piece at ey have not seen or rehearsed. This Sight Reading evaluation is done in a separate room wi one evaluator. The same criteria are used to arrive at a rating. The group has 6 minutes to study/discuss e music before being evaluated. As we a approach e LGPE (or commonly called Festival ) event, here are a few interesting facts: In order to achieve a I or Superior rating, not only does each student have to perform at approximately e 99 percentile of accuracy, e entire group must also hit in e mid/upper ninetie percentile in e ensemble categories. If we had only 1 or 2 mistakes per student, we would be evaluated wi ratings of II or III. The issue is not only about each student being able to play eir part, it is about blending, balancing, and prioritizing parts into a clear presentation. Playing in tune is a constant struggle, requiring intense concentration, analysis, and action in order to correct pitches as ey occur. It truly is a team effort! On any given note, a student can have as many as 7-9 different responsibilities (beginning e note at e correct time, streng, volume playing e correct note duration of note blend to oers play in tune ending of note.style of note). There ousands of notes in a performance. We have begun is rigorous process in e 8 Grade (wi some selected 7 graders) and High School Band Classes. Please note e extra after school rehearsals, sectionals, camps and concerts for is critical event for our band program. The journey has already begun and we are so excited about e future of e Cherokee Bluff Bands. Band and Sports: Why Do Bo? Submitted by Liz Hinley Beeoven s Hammerklavier Sonata a powerful piano solo at is respected as one of Beeoven s most challenging pieces. Imagine for a moment being a skilled pianist announcing an impromptu performance of such a piece. Is is perhaps a little ambitious? Do you feel like you can perform it comfortably, soon? How about right after winning an Olympic gold medal? French Olympic champion and concert pianist Micheline Ostermeyer did just at. Right after winning gold in shot put at e 1948 London Games, she performed is recital in celebration of her win. Ostermeyer was unique in at she was a professional in music and sport. For what experts in ese fields may say are too distinct from each oer and erefore impossible to master bo, Ostermeyer acknowledges how e qualities at make a true artist are nearly e

3 same qualities at make a true alete. She shared how sports helped relax her and playing piano gave her a sense of motion and rhym. For what seems like two different areas of skill, Ostermeyer has proven at ey are more alike an at first glance. Band and sports bo offer great skills and benefits at not only improve one s lifestyle, but ey complement each oer so at a musician can find benefits from being aletic and an alete can discover benefits for being musical. Research supports having musical training can increase physical coordination and motor skill ability, and vice versa, at being an alete can improve a musician s skills and performances. Alough ere is currently no research on outcome measures of individuals who study bo music and sport simultaneously, ere are intriguing findings at offer bo musicians and aletes information at can help take eir performances to e next level. Below are a few key findings research offers for musicians who are looking to improve eir physical abilities to play an instrument, or wanting to strengen e control of emotion and mental fatigue: Physically active individuals may cope wi stress such as performance anxiety, especially post-performance. Exercise has e potential to improve e quality of long-duration performances. Intention-structured practices, such as yoga, can enhance and support posture and reduce musculoskeletal imbalances. Stretching and fine motor exercises can improve range of motion, blood flow, and fine muscle streng to aid in holding and controlling an instrument. Interventions using streng training, specifically endurance streng, are proven beneficial for not only improving muscular streng but also having a positive effect on perceived exertion while playing an instrument. Here are example findings on how music benefits aletic performance for aletes seeking an edge in training and competition: Motivational-rated music can improve ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), motivation, and arousal. Music can encourage aletes to work harder during exercise and for extended periods of time towards failure (to failure studies). Since ere is a strong response to rhymical qualities of music, one can improve technique and coordination of eir kinetic chain. Stimulative music can influence positive self-talk and in e zone (flow state) effects. Music can affect e heart rate by eier slightly increasing its rates wi stimulative music or slowing its rates wi sedative music. A child growing up wi bo music education and aletic participation can learn many valuable skills, bo cognitive and physical, at lead to a more significant development and success in learning and potentially his or her future career. Therefore, children should be encouraged to stay active in bo music and sport as long as e desire and motivation are prevalent. As an adult, a combination of music and sports can provide many positive paways to improving one s ability and enjoyment in his or her chosen field of work. For what seems like two very different worlds of entertainment, music and sports are in fact more related and provide e perfect balance to improve and optimize one s life. LET S HAVE AN AWESOME WEEK BEARS!
