1 East Durham Music Festival 2009

2 welcome I am pleased to welcome you to this year s East Durham Music Festival, which promises its usual blend of live music and talented entertainers. Previously organised by the former District of Easington Council, I am delighted that Durham County Council has kept this much-loved festival alive, for what is now its seventeenth year. The event, which will run from Saturday, 3 October to Sunday, 22 November, offers an exciting line-up of musical talent and as such makes it difficult to pick out only a few highlights. However, a special mention this year should be given to East Durham College, which moved to its new campus earlier this year. The college s Lubetkin Theatre with its state-of-the-art facilities offers a programme to please most musical tastes, including the eagerly anticipated Dance for The King (6 November) featuring the flamencoinspired guitar skills of Paul Donnelly. Many of the festival s performers are stars in their own musical genres. Headlining this year s Seaham Musicfest (25 October) is the renowned American blues singer Michael Roach and stalwart of the British folk scene Box Fox. For fans of brass you can t better Mark Bousie and his fellow soloists from The Fairey Band (25 October), however, if you enjoy the best of world music then you shouldn t miss one of India s leading traditional folk ensembles Pallab Kirtania (11 October). The festival of course is deeply rooted in our local communities and as such offers many opportunities to sample the best of our home-grown musical talent, both professional and amateur, with performers ranging from classical ensembles to rock bands and musical theatre groups. In addition, following a festival tradition, there is a host of workshops for both budding and more experienced musicians to take part in. So as you can see, once again East Durham Music Festival offers plenty for all to enjoy. Eunice Huntington, Cabinet Member for Healthier Coummunities and Culture.
