3 Program Notes David Shaffer was born in Columbus, Ohio and attended schools in Grove City, Ohio before earning degrees at both The Ohio State University and Miami University (Ohio). He has taught in the school systems of Hamilton, Northridge, and Wyoming, Ohio. Into The Light is a concert march with many accented rhythms which opens in a fanfare style. The first theme is played by the french horns and alto saxophones. The slow middle section arrives quite abruptly and features the clarinet section with the melody. The fanfare section returns and builds steadily until the end. Brian Balmages is an active performer, arranger, and composer. He received his Bachelors Degree in music from James Madison University and a Masters Degree from the University of Miami (FL). His works have been performed internationally at conferences such as the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the International Tuba/ Euphonium Conference, the International Trombone Festival, and the International Trumpet Guild Conference. His list of commissions includes many schools and universities as well as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, JUNCTION, and the Riverside Wind Symphony. Sought after as a clinician, conductor, and composer, he is composer-in-residence for the Mid-Atlantic Wind Conductors Conference and Skyline Brass Music Festival. Of Parade of the Jesters, the composer writes, Often marches are associated with noble and stately occasions. They tend to be patriotic and powerful. This work, however, explores the kind of march that would accompany a parade of court jesters on their way to entertain the king. This light and humorous piece follows the same form as traditional marches, but contains some unusual twists. The piece approaches several grand moments, but the humor of the jesters continuously intervenes. The piece builds into a final strain, interrupted one last time by antics of the jesters. The Patriots is a fine example of a march that draws its energy from a bright tempo that scurries by in cut-time. The goal for the ensemble is to bring about the syncopated accents and dramatic dynamic contrasts, all the time showing control and a required lightness of style. This toe-tapper by David Shaffer is as enjoyable to play as it is to hear. James Hosay was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. After high school, he joined the United States Army as a trumpet player and graduated from the U.S. Armed Forces School of Music. After his first three year enlistment he landed a job as Music Copiest for the United States Army Band (Pershing's Own) in Washington, D.C. Having aspirations of becoming a professional composer and arranger, he used this time to develop his writing skills, and in 1981 he earned the position of Staff Arranger for the United States Army Band. During his tenure as Staff Arranger, Hosay wrote arrangements for many well known recording artists, including Patti LaBelle, Amy Grant, Reba McEntire, and Lee Greenwood. During his 20 year military career, he received two Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, and

4 personal letter of commendation from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Colin Powell, after writing a special march for the General s retirement ceremony. Now retired from the United States Army, James Hosay once again resides in his hometown of Norfolk, Virginia. In April 1995, just in time to save the baseball season, the longest players strike in the history of professional sports finally came to an end. Once again, fans went to stadiums all over the United States and Canada to enjoy the great American pastime of baseball. Opening Day! is a tribute to a sport that is loved by millions. Hosay attempts to capture the grandeur and excitement that is found at a major league baseball game in the sounds of this fanfare. Tunes That Go Bump in the Night is a real scream! Filled with surprises, it's a comically clever medley combining several "scary" classics, including The Sorcerer's Apprentice, In The Hall Of The Mountain King, and Funeral March Of A Marionette (the Alfred Hitchcock theme). A hair-raising concert experience, this piece takes a light-hearted approach to music that was originally written with darker intentions. Mark Williams was born in Chicago and grew up in Spokane, Washington. He held Bachelor of Arts in Education and Master of Education degrees from Eastern Washington University. He taught music in the state of Washington for many years, specializing in elementary band. Renowned for his compositions for band and orchestra, Williams earned numerous awards including the Western International Band Clinic s Gralia Competition and several ASCAP Special Awards. In addition to his writing and travel schedule, Mark performed regularly on all woodwinds and served as Conductor and Artistic Director for the Spokane British Brass Band. The Incredibles! is a medley of songs taken from the music score of the a Pixar animated feature by the same name. The soundtrack by Michael Giacchino is a unique mix of spy/adventure music reminiscent of the 1960s with a touch of cool jazz. Paul Murtha is a native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania where he studied jazz arranging with John Morris and theory with Richard Napolitan. In 1983, Paul earned a B.S. degree in Music Education (with a minor in Jazz Studies) from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. While at Duquesne, Murtha studied jazz arranging with John Wilson and orchestration with Joseph Wilcox Jenkins. A versatile composer-arranger, he served as the Chief Arranger of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point and is currently the Chief Arranger for The United States Army Band (Pershing s Own) in Washington, D.C. Frank Ticheli is well known for his works for concert band, many of which have become standards in the repertoire. In addition to composing, he has appeared as guest conductor of his music at Carnegie Hall, at many American universities and music festivals, and in cities throughout the world. He received his Doctoral and Masters degrees in Composition from The University of Michigan. About his composition, the composer writes: An American Elegy is, above all, an expression of hope. It was composed in memory of those who lost their lives at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, and to honor the survivors. It is offered as a tribute to their great strength and courage in the face of a terrible tragedy. I hope the work can also serve as one reminder of how

5 fragile and precious life is and how intimately connected we all are as human beings. I was moved and honored by this commission invitation, and deeply inspired by the circumstances surrounding it. Rarely has a work revealed itself to me with such powerful speed and clarity. The first eight bars of the main melody came to me fully formed in a dream. Virtually every element of the work was discovered within the span of about two weeks. The remainder of my time was spent refining, developing, and orchestrating. The work begins at the bottom of the ensemble's register, and ascends gradually to a heartfelt cry of hope. The main theme that follows, stated by the horns, reveals a more lyrical, serene side of the piece. A second theme, based on a simple repeated harmonic pattern, suggests yet another, more poignant mood. These three moods - hope, serenity, and sadness - become intertwined throughout the work, defining its complex expressive character. A four-part canon builds to a climactic quotation of the Columbine Alma Mater. The music recedes, and an offstage trumpeter is heard, suggesting a celestial voice - a heavenly message. The full ensemble returns with a final, exalted statement of the main theme. Rollo is a fictional character created by Charles Ives and used in his musical writings to illustrate ultra conservative musical tastes. Rollo may not know anything about music, but he knows what he likes: usually something banal or too-often-played. Among the kinds of music Rollo does like are, not surprisingly, Ives own pieces and modern music in general. In Rollo Takes A Walk, the composer develops Ives satirical character, taking Rollo (and us) on a musical outing in which all the ideas, though original, are commonplace, very familiar-sounding, and even deliberately banal. The piece is intended as a good-humored, gentle parody of concerts in the park and of some bands in which the composer has played where the tuning was less than perfect. The piece is not intended as a put-down of bands but rather as an exploration of the out-oftune or microtonal character that the composer views as a forceful, original element in American music. David Maslanka received his musical education at a number of prestigious educational institutions. As a high school student, he studied at the New England Conservatory. His Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin Conservatory included a year of study at the Hochschule Mozarteum in Salzburg. He received his Masters and Doctorate in composition from Michigan State University. His principal teachers in composition were Joseph Wood and H. Owen Reed. Maslanka has included in Rollo Takes A Walk several ideas which evoke an earlier, more innocent era in America, as well as providing some fun for the band and audience alike. Bugler s Holiday has probably motivated more trumpet players to master the art of double-tonging in the last five decades than any other single piece of music. Featuring the trumpet section in three parts, the harmonies that define the structure of the piece are not entirely complicated, however, the speed with which many of the soloistic passages fly by makes for a challenging piece of music. Bell tones, syncopated rhythms, and a brisk tempo are all part of what makes this piece a classic in the trumpet repertoire. Known for his light-hearted treatment of arrangements for bands and orchestras, Leroy Anderson created this gem that is just pure fun to play and hear.
