UNCG Summer Camp 2010 We hope you will be attending the 2010 UNCG Summer Music Camp this July! Here are some photos from last year s camp just ask these students how much fun it is! 2 ALL DISTRICT - ALL STATE - ALL THAT MUSIC! All That Jazz ~ Yeah! The All Region Jazz clinic was represented by five Franklin Academy band students. From 6th Grade came Philip Norris (French Horn). From 8th Grade there was Tierra Marsh (Alto Sax), Kate Whitacre (Trumpet) and Matthew LoCicero (Double Bass). From High School there was Rachel Norris (clarinet). A sixth student qualified, Kyle Ellington, but was unable to attend. The first day was exciting, but again their clinic was foiled by snow. The clinic ended early with an informal concert at 5:00 p.m. and then students were sent home. BUT, it was still a great experience, especially for the students that have never been in this type of clinic and their performance was most incredible, considering they had only had one day to prepare three pieces. ENSEMBLE GIANTS OF JAZZ Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 September 28, 1991) It's always been a gift with me, hearing music the way I do. I don't know where it comes from, it's just there and I don't question it. - Miles Davis Kevin Tirado (President) MUSIC AWARENESS... Tri-M Music Honor Society RAISING AWARENESS The FA Chapter of the TMMHS is initiating a community service project to raise awareness for the NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY. This year the NC Symphony has experienced financial constraints as have many of our local arts organizations. Here is their selection of concerts to raise awareness by encouraging people to buy tickets. An original, lyrical soloist and a demanding group leader, Miles Davis was the most consistently innovative musician in jazz from the late 1940s through the 1960s. Davis grew up in East St. Louis, and took up trumpet at the age of 13; two years later he was already playing professionally. He moved to New York in September 1944, ostensibly to enter the Institute of Musical Art but actually to locate his idol, Charlie Parker. He joined Parker in live appearances and recording sessions (1945-8), at the same time playing in other groups and touring in the big bands led by Benny Carter and Billy Eckstine. 3 NC YOUNG ALL STAR SYMPHONY My experience in the NC Young All Star symphony is almost something I can not put into words but I will try. This program has shown me that the levels of music that one wants to achieve are possible. This is mainly due to not only the people that I am playing with, but the conductor as well. Mr. Llewellyn has an energy that creates a feeling of acceptance, confidence, and overall passion for music. The intensive training began when I was mailed the sheet music for a piece called Sinfonietta. The piece was an original, a common yet scarce occurrence in the music world because original hard copies of music are hard to come by. It was all in three movements (fragments of the By: Jackson Cooper FA Student, Jackson Cooper, with NC Symphony Director, Grant Llewellyn. music) and I was told by the music that I was going to play bass drum and suspended cymbals. For the fellow percussionists reading, we all know that being in percussion is about organization and trying to roll a suspended cymbal in one hand and hit a rhythm on the bass drum in the other is not a day in the park. Now, I was nervous. When I got to the rehearsals that lasted over three hours, my nerves were relaxed. There were more percussionists. I was informed I would be playing crash cymbals and not three other instruments with any available limbs on my body. I suddenly felt bad for the one percussionist I met who had to combine six percussion and drum kit parts for West Side Story and play them all by himself. Rehearsal started as most orchestral rehearsals do with an A. The orchestra tunes as the maestro (conductor) waits. When we were done tuning, Mr. Llewellyn talked to us. I have never heard such inspirational words from a human being s mouth. He told us how the learning process behind our playing is as important if not more than the finished concert. We were all breathless. After a long day at school, coming to this gentleman s (and I emphasize the word gentle-man) nurture and love for music was like a breath of fresh air. Each section of the orchestra (it was smaller than a regular orchestra, no trombones, no tubas) got to work with affiliates of North Carolina s own symphony. We as percussionists got to work with Rick. We called him Rick and he liked that we called him Rick. Rick mainly supervised our playing, giving us small tips and how-to s while the strings and cellos played and rehearsed with Mr. Llewellyn. The concert was now near. We performed at the North Carolina School of Math and Science s auditorium. Our three movement piece was cut down to the first movement. But Mr. Llewellyn was hopeful. Whenever I hear a new piece of music, He told the crowd and it was true: this was a world premiere work; it has never been performed in the States. I always like to hear it twice. So here is the first movement of Karel Husa s Sinfonietta again. And we played it again. The composer was to come to our rehearsals and the concert. Unfortunately, with his old age, he was feeling sick but luckily his family came to the performance. Mr. Husa would be proud, I overheard his daughter tell the Maestro. Llewellyn smiled. I realized that I learned more in these three days than I have in band. I have seen a good leader and I have seen passion and I have seen a professional doing something he loves to do all in that smile. The competition for a spot in this orchestra is very tough to come by. I did not because I could play every note perfect, but because I truly wanted this experience. So be encouraged to try new experiences like this one. Lead and play with passion. Share your love for music with those who too want to learn. Try new things and always remember that without music life would be a mistake -Friedrich Nietzsche. A little known fact about Einstein is that when he was young he did extremely poor in school. His grade school teachers told his parents to take him out of school because he was "too stupid to learn" and it would be a waste of resources for the school to invest time and energy in his education. The school suggested that his parents get Albert an easy, manual labor job as soon as they could. His mother did not think that Albert was "stupid". Instead of following the school's advice, Albert's parents bought him a violin. Albert became good at the violin. Music was the key that helped Albert Einstein become one of the smartest men who has ever lived. Einstein himself says that the reason he was so smart is because he played the violin. He loved the music of Mozart and Bach the most. A friend of Einstein, G.J. Withrow, said that the way Einstein figured out his problems and equations was by improvising on the violin. COOL! HUH?
