The best way to learn harmony is by practicing it on the piano. During HAP you will learn how to interpret and play a melody with a chord scheme. After successfully completing HAP, students can opt for piano as an elective, enabling students to become even more proficient at playing the piano. *Ensemblezaal -2

6 INFORMATION PER SECTION Music Business & Career 4.08 Co de Kloet & René Brijker In present times, a good career in music requires more than excellent musical skills. Especially in the beginning, there are many things that you will have to take care of yourself: arranging concerts, recording, promoting, and managing the financial part of it all. To prepare you for this, the jazz department offers an extended program that helps you work out your own projects, containing lectures from guest teachers from the music business, practical skills courses (website, presentation skills), and more. Research Jazz Master 4.37 Yaniv Nachum Program A practice-based project forms an important part of the Master. With their project, students try to find answers to questions from their performance practice. Topics evolve around repertoire, the notes, education, cultural interaction, and instruments. Examples from last years are the Flamenco trombone, life and work of Kenny Dorham, fiddle tunes on the double bass, North Indian rhythmic cadences in jazz-oriented contexts, and Herbie Hancock on guitar. Master Electives 4.41 Barbara Bleij Master electives are immersed courses in music history, music theory, arranging, composition, etc. During this info meeting, information will be shared about the content of the courses as well as the design of the electives program such as requirements and study points. Advise for future master students is also possible. Ensemble program 4.42 David de M. Oyens & Maarten v/d Grinten The ensembles are an essential part of the jazz department. The goal is to make sure the students get the practical experience they need and stimulate their own creativity, to make sure that after they graduate, they know their way around different styles and situations needed for their instrument. This year it is organized in collaboration with several American and European conservatories. First our Amsterdam bands will compete for two spots in the Finals. Then, on the 28th of March at the International Final in the BIMHUIS they will meet bands from The School of Jazz at the New School, New York, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Jazzcampus der Hochschule für Musik FHNW, Basel.
