6 President s Page Wayne Millett Welcome to Conference! I hope you are all making plans to attend the Idaho Music Educators Association Inservice Conference, November 17-19, 2016, at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Barely nine months have passed since our last conference, and it has been a bit of a challenge in planning a conference so soon. I feel that we have succeeded in putting together a program that will give everyone who attends something to take home and implement in their classroom. Make plans, as you attend Conference sessions, to also visit and sit in on rehearsals for the Idaho All-State Groups. I have discovered many effective teaching strategies by watching the great conductors that we bring in to work with our students. You should also make time to visit with colleagues and renew friendships with other directors from around the state. Many times I have found that my greatest resource is networking with my peers. Please remember that the IMEA Board and I are always open to your suggestions. Feel free to contact any one of us with your concerns or comments. I look forward to seeing you soon in Nampa. Conference Registration Deadline! Conference Registration is now open. You can access the registration page at the IMEA website: idahomusiced.org Your Login ID is your NAfME Primary ; Your Password is your NAfME Membership Number. Please note that it is the same registration site as the NW Division Conference. Click on the link for the Idaho MEA Conference Registration. The last day for online registration is October 31. That is a very short turn around time. If you need to register with a check you can use the PAPER REGISTRATION FORM on page 8. Hotel Information: Deadlines! Housing 530 students/chaperones and blocking hotel rooms for conference participants was a real challenge this year with the rooms that were available in the Nampa area. If you have attended a conference in Nampa you are aware that there are no hotels close to the N.N.U. campus. You will need to have access to transportation to and from the hotels and N.N.U. (We anticipate that carpooling will be available. Riding the All-State Honor Group busses will NOT be an option.) We have blocks of hotel rooms reserved for conference attendees at 5 different area hotels. 10 Specialist s Space Peggy Wenner Fine Arts Specialist, Idaho State Department of Education Update on Arts & Humanities Standards If you are wondering what has happened since the 2016 Legislature tabled the motion to adopt the updated Arts and Humanities and Science Standards, here is a brief update. The SDE took immediate action to address the Legislature's complaint that not enough public comment had been gathered for the standards. Early in the spring, the entire Content Division of the SDE took a statewide tour to collect public comment and answer any questions regarding the new Arts and Humanities and Science Standards, as well as any other of the Content Standards. We held meetings in Boise, Twin Falls, Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Lewiston, and Coeur d'alene. We also took public comments online for a month and addressed all of these comments in a report to Superintendent Ybarra. Next, the Coordinators of the various content areas worked with their committees to determine if the public comment verified just cause for any changes to the standards. In the area of Arts and Humanities, all of the committees agreed that no comment warranted actual changes in the standards, other than a few minor editing corrections, which were made in the documents. In August the standards went back to the Idaho State Board of Education for approval, and both Arts and Humanities and Science were approved unanimously. One change that could affect the Arts and Humanities made by the SDE Administration is that our standards were submitted in separate sections. In other words, Music is separate from World Language and Interdisciplinary Humanities. This does mean that one discipline could be accepted, while another is not approved by the Legislature. The Arts and Humanities standards involve the following six disciplines: Dance, Media Arts, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, and World Language. Another 21 day public comment period will commence from October This time, only members from the SDE Administration will tour, but online comments will be accepted as well as personal testimony. If you have any opinions about our new standards to share, please be aware of this comment period and look on the SDE website for a meeting in your area. Finally, once reviewed by the public again, the standards will once more be reviewed by the Idaho State Board of Education for approval in their December meeting. If approved, they will move to the 2017 Legislature. If approved by the 2017 Legislature, the new Standards will become the SDE approved Content Standards and be in effect for the school year. If you have any questions regarding the standards, please check the SDE link: standards under Idaho Content Standards. There is a link for all of the individual proposed new standards. 12 North By Northwest NW NAfME President Camille Blackburn Time to REFLECT & Time to REJUVENATE We are well into the school year and chances are the anticipation and excitement of starting a new year are beginning to wane, for us and our students. This week at my school we begin the required series of testing that lasts throughout the rest of the year. We have far too many meeting and committee assignments that do nothing to help me improve as a music educator. In fact, they take time and attention away from what I need to do in planning for my students and building my program. It is annoying and it's easy to start slipping into having a snarky attitude about a lot of things. It would be good for us all to make time to stop and REFLECT on why we became music educators. Were you inspired by a special music teacher? Who was that person? Have you ever told them how much they influenced you? Did you get excited as a young student about selecting an instrument to play in either band or orchestra, or were you that kid who loved to sing? Do you remember being in an ensemble, either in public school or college or at a music camp, that fed you intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually? Were you selected for an All State or a NW Division Honor Ensemble? Have you traveled with a music group and performed in a world class concert hall? Do you have lifelong friends that you met while making music? I don t know anyone who chose to study music education who expected to be rich or famous. We loved how music made us feel, how it validated us as a person, and we wanted to share that with others. Being a teacher, and especially a music teacher, is a calling. You are part instructor, part coach, part conductor, part counselor, part recording engineer, part travel agent, part event planner, and part surrogate parent. It can be daunting to fill all of those roles for all of your students. Some kids we reach and make a big difference, and some we don t. But we never give up, not even when they pull kids out of our rehearsals for tests, or student council activities, or athletic events, or debate tournaments, etc. etc. etc. So, how to REJUVENATE? I do think that self-reflection and allowing yourself to be peaceful, no matter what happens to disrupt your plans, can be a big help. I also know that attending your state conferences and interacting with colleagues is valuable on many levels, both professionally and personally. I am excited to be able to attend several conferences in the NW Division States this year. I hope you are planning to attend our own NW Division Conference, February 16-19, 2017 in Bellevue, WA. Our Headliners are Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, Collegiate General; Jeremy Woolstenhulme, Orchestra; Jim Solomon, Elementary; Paula Crider, Band; and Eph Ehly, Choral. The Friday Night Concert will feature Seattle area artist Gail Pettis, and Just for Kicks, a vocal ensemble of NW music educators Kirby Shaw, Randy Crenshaw, Kirk Marcy, and Vijay Singh. There will be a wide variety of sessions to choose from, concert hours, and of course the NW Division Honor Ensembles Gala Concerts. In doing my own self-reflection, I realized there are several of you that I still owe a Starbucks gift card. I was a little distracted this summer with a total shoulder replacement. Fun times! Not to worry, I ll get that taken care of asap! See YOU in Nampa AND Bellevue! FALL 2016 Idaho Music Notes 12

14 Joe Cherrington inducted into the IMEA Hall of Fame On Tuesday, May 24, 2016, an induction ceremony was held in the Sugar-Salem High School auditorium for Joseph Cherrington, retired music teacher and longtime music teacher at SSHS. His induction into the IMEA Hall of Fame was held at the final choral concert of the year by Dan North, Past President of IMEA, Bill Baxter, who nominated Joe, Mark Seare, current band director at SSHS, and Evan Dunn, current choral director at SSHS. Joe was Director of Choirs at Sugar-Salem for 31 years; altogether he taught a total of 38 year, mostly in small school district. According to Mark Seare, His groups never sounded as if they came from a small school... His swing choir shows were always musically precise, energetic, and creative. Mr. Cherrington was passionate about music, and the difference it made in the lives of students. He taught the whole child, using music as a medium for teaching life. The number of students he touched is incalculable. His influence will bear sway in the hall of this school for many, many years! His principal Kevin Schultz at Sugar-Salem remarked, Mr. Cherrington s position in the district was unique in that his choir program spanned grades His dedication to students of all ages created a program as inclusive as it was polished. He managed to ignite the musical spark in the elementary students, fan the flame into the junior high students, and feed the inferno with the high school choirs. Joe was born and raised in Preston, Idaho, receiving Bachelors and Masters degrees from BYU-Provo, with a second Master s degree in Education Administration from ISU. He started his teaching career in Firth, Idaho. He currently teaches at BYU-Idaho as an adjunct faculty member in the music department. Joe served as President of IMEA District VI two times, and was recognized as District VI Teacher of the Year twice, in 1996 and Madison Transit, a group he sang with, was invited to sing at the 1990 All-State convention. He served several years on the IMEA Board. Other major accomplishments include 12 choir tours of Canada, six local tours to schools in southeastern Idaho, and several tours to Salt Lake City to perform in Concerts at Temple Square. Joe had students participate in All-State and All-Northwest honor choirs and bands from 1984 until he retired in Several of his students who participated State Solo Contest placed first, second, or third. One student, tenor Devin Bean, placed second in the State Solo Contest four years in a row! Joe has been invited as a clinician and adjudicator in Idaho and Wyoming. Joe and Debra, his wife of 39 years, have nine children and twenty-one grandchildren. His main hobby is gardening and he received a University of Idaho Master Gardener award in He was recently elected to the Sugar City City Council. Congratulations to an exemplary music educator and well-deserving inductee to the IMEA Hall of Fame! We invite you to join or re-join IMEA TODAY! The agenda for the meeting focused on the following items. Current President, Wayne Millett, took the board through our governing policies and handbook. The board has been working to update and clarify this document, and since we had many new faces on the board, this was a perfect time to cover this information. As IMEA looks to expand its role as a resource for its members and a voice for advocacy in our state, job descriptions and roles for several new chair positions were shared and discussed. All Districts & Area Chairs reported back to the board on the specifics of their activities and areas of need for the coming year. Discussion centered around expanding membership and the challenge of maintaining an accurate database of current and retired music educators in our state. Publications, website, and finances reported on their activities. State Solo reported on the event and will be again expanding the event to now include woodwind ensembles. Literature for the event may be selected from either the Idaho or Texas lists. Beginning in , State Solo & Ensemble will exclusively use the Texas PML Grade 1 Solo & Ensemble List. Ron Curtis reported on vocal auditions for All-NW Honor Groups. There are currently concerns about the current audition requirements so a committee has been formed to research alternate methods in the future. Tim Sandford presented an updated Mission Statement & Vision Narrative for IMEA that was seconded and passed. Reports were given by all chairs for this Fall's All-State Honor Groups and In-service conference. The timing of All-State was discussed and a new date has been set going forward. The Board passed a motion to set the annual All-State & In-Service Conference to end on the 1st Saturday of February, beginning in 2018 and continuing through At that time, the board will re-evaluate the timing of the event. The complete minutes from the meeting are available on our website. Respectfully, Quentin DeWitt, IMEA Secretary FALL 2016 Idaho Music Notes 14

22 UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE NEWS UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO Lionel Hampton School of Music Welcomes New Faculty Ruby Fulton, Assistant Professor of Theory and Composition: Baltimorebased musician and composer Ruby Fulton writes music that invites listeners to explore non-musical ideas through sound. Her musical portfolio includes explorations of mental illness, Buddhism, philosophy, psychedelic drugs, addiction, and chess strategy; and profiles of iconic popular figures like the artist Jen-Michel Basquiat and musicians Syd Barrett and Ringo Starr. Fulton is a multi-instrumentalist, performing on violin, flugelhorn and keys. She holds a doctorate from the Peabody Conservatory with additional degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Boston University. She has taught undergraduate and graduate composition at the Shenandoah Conservatory, the Peabody Conservatory, Johns Hopkins University and Towson University. Claire Murphy, Clinical Assistant Professor of Music Education: Claire Murphy, a proud choral and band student growing up, has over twenty years of experience in teaching music, from elementary to university students in Florida, Idaho and North Carolina. Originally from North Carolina, Claire has founded and developed numerous school, community and church choirs, and her students consistentlyare selected to participate in state honor choirs and festivals. In higher education, she has served as an adjunct professor foe East Carolina University and Barton College. Claire was the conductor of the Greenville Choral Society Children's Chorus and is presently the conductor of the Palouse Choral Society Children's Choir. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees in vocal performance and music education from East Carolina University. Matthew Shipes, Clinical Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium: Matthew Shipes is a low brass artist who is an active performer and educator. He was previously the low-brass instructor at Shepherd University in West Virginia, and the euphonium instructor at Towson University in Maryland. He also served as a euphoniumist and tubist with the United States Air Force Band in Washington D.C. Shipes received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baylor University, a Master of Music in euphonium performance from the University of Arkansas and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in tuba performance with a minor in trombone performance from the University of Georgia. Shipes' teachers include David Graves, Benjamin Pierce, David Zerkel, Brent Phillips, Gerald Sloan and Joshua Bynum. Kate Skinner, Jazz Instructor: Jazz pianist and vocalist Kate Skinner maintains an active performing, composing and teaching career in the western United States. A native of Ogden, Utah, Skinner pulls influences from the bluegrass and classical roots of her childhood into both her songwriting and performing as a jazz musician. Kate delved into R&B, funk, and hip hop, genres that also continually find their way into her musical explorations helping to create her own unique voice. Part of this unique voice is an obsession with alternative keyboard instruments and a study of the great keyboardists of jazz, rock and funk. As a pianist, Skinner is in demand in a variey of performance styles. Her work as a vocalist has seen much success among a wide audience of listeners across genres. Kate has won multiple awards, including a Downbeat award for Outstanding Vocal Performance and a Jazz Education Network award for composition. The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival Celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2017 The University of Idaho proud that this festival got its start in the Music Department of the University of Idaho in 1967 and are even prouder to return the direction of the festival once again to the Lionel Hampton School of Music. We are thrilled to call the festival our own and to make the experience even more educationally focused for you and your students. This year we are going to offer a competitive option for those schools that wish to compete. We will introduce a web-based adjudication system with voice-recorded comments. We will continue to offer educational clinics for every student performance. We will also offer a variety of world-class workshops throughout the day from sensational artist-educators. One of the most exciting shifts this year is the move of student performances and workshops back to the campus of the University of Idaho. Our aim is to streamline your day as educators and provide your students a full experience of a university campus. With all of this focus on the daytime performances, we have not forgotten about the evening experience! We have changes in store for you here as well. Each of the evening concerts - Thursday, Friday and Saturday - will be in one location, the ASUI Kibbie Activity Center. We understand that keeping students out late after a long day of performances and workshops is not ideal. We will begin the concerts at 7:30p.m. each evening, with a projected end time of 10:00p.m. Outstanding student soloists from the day will be invited to perform on the mainstage for this evening concert. We invite you and your students to join us this year. We are looking forward to seeing many familiar faces and also enthusiastically await all of the newcomers to the festival. WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY On Tuesday, October 11th, the Percunovo Percussion Duo performed in Hudson Concert Hall, Rogers Music Center at Willamette University The Percunovo Percussion Duo, Jonathan Ovalle & Neeraj Mehta, strives to bring contemporary art music and global percussion rhythms together through diverse repertoire and virtuosic performance. The duo made their international debut at the 2014 Mahidol University Brass and Percussion Conference in Bangkok, Thailand where they performed a full recital, gave educational clinics & workshops, and appeared with the Mahidol University Wind Ensemble as concerto soloists while in residence. Following their Thailand debut, the duo toured India, where they presented performance workshops at seven international schools in the cities of Mumbai and Pune. More recently, the duo has been active performing and giving workshops at universities in the U.S. With a collaboration history of ten years in a wide variety of musical genres, the duo has appeared together and independently throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Their experience includes performances at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, The Midwest Clinic, Detroit International Jazz Festival, Art Tatum Heritage Jazz Festival, as well as numerous guest artist residencies including the Juilliard School, Northern Illinois University, and others. Their current work together as Percunovo Duo includes concertizing and developing repertoire which features contemporary duo percussion works, new commissions, transcriptions, and original co-composed and improvised music. IMEA STATE SOLO NEWS The 2017 IMEA State Solo & Ensemble Competition will be held on May 5-6 at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho. Friday night will consist of vocal and possibly string performances with the rest of the performances on Saturday. This year, we will be adding Woodwind Ensembles to the event. String and Woodwind Ensembles should look on the Texas List for appropriate material. Please remember that when choosing from the Texas List, whether for solo or ensemble, the piece must be a from the Grade 1 level. I want to thank the music directors from last year for getting payments in on time. It was such a big help to not have so many late payments during check in! Please look on the website for further instructions and rules. I am glad to answer questions as needed, but many can be found on the idahomusiced.org website. Here s to a great year! Eva Hale - IMEA State Solo Chaira BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY Boise State University Department of Music is thrilled to welcome Dr. Sam L. Richards to campus for the academic year.
