1 Terminology Ice Cream Cones from Print out your ice cream cone pieces on card rather than paper. Laminate them for extra durability.

2 Teaching Ideas Ice Cream Terminology: Print and cut out the Terminology Ice Cream Cones. One child chooses an ice cream and holds it up for everyone to read the music term. Sing a song of your choice and sing it in that style (Jean, Jean, Dressed in Green is perfect for this activity - available from For example: if the ice cream term is piano, sing the song quietly. (Always remind children that Forte means to sing strong - but it s not a shouting voice, it s still a singing voice. Alert children to the dangers of damaging their voices by using them incorrectly, such as in shout-singing. Demonstrate a healthy piano and forte singing sound.) Musical Learning: musical terminology musical expression singing styles vocal control using the voice voice exploration putting theory into practice music concepts musicianship development Guess the Term: A variation on this activity is for one child to secretly select an ice-cream term card and then sing the song to the class in that style. The class has to guess what style the song is being sung in. When they have guessed correctly, the child turns the card over to confirm the answer. Older children enjoy choosing two or more terms and incorporating them together in the song. Match the Opposites: Work with the children to match the ice cream cones containing opposite terms: piano / forte crescendo / decrescendo staccato / legato allegro / adagio ritardando / accelerando

3 Teaching Ideas - Page Two Sing an Opposite: Choose two opposite ice cream terms and hold one in each hand. Hold one ice cream cone up at a time, alternating between the two terms while the children sing. (For example: when you hold up the crescendo ice cream the children gradually sing louder, when you hold up the decrescendo ice cream they gradually sing softer. Alternate between the two.) Choose a child to be the leader. Sing an Assortment: Hold up random ice cream cone terms and children have to adjust their voices accordingly. What s the Word? Print and cut out the extra scoops containing the definitions of the musical terms. Place the ice creams on the board and ask individual children to come and add an extra scoop to the ice cream by matching the definition to the term. A variation of this game is to cover the ice cream term with the corresponding definition scoop. Children guess the correct word and check their answer by lifting the flap. Cool Bulletin Board Display: Use the Ice Cream set to create a bulletin board display for your classroom - a fun way for your students to absorb musical terms. For an interactive bulletin board staple the definitions over the terms, children can lift the flap to see the corresponding term.
