Conduction and lecturers: Jens Johansen, Aarhus (DK) Workshops: Jens Johansen, Aarhus (DK) Unduzo, Freiburg: Linda Jesse, Richard Leisegang, Cornelius Mack, Julian Knörzer, Patrick Heil Alexandra Ziegler, Frankfurt Stefan Kalmer, Munich Julian Knörzer, Freiburg; Patrick Heil, Freiburg Torsten Krill, Stuttgart Mathias Klingner, Freiburg 1
Jens Johansen Is a lecture in the Department of Musicology at the University of Aarhus, where he gives lectures on arrangements for pop/rock/jazz choir and classical and modern music theory and analysis. In 1991, he founded the internationally renowned choir Vocal Line. With Vocal Line he has toured through Europe, Asia and the USA and has worked with Bobby McFerrin, The Real Group, Rajaton, Maybebop, Mads Langer, Julie Maria, TV2 and many more. Jens Johansen is a much-sought choral educator who already has led numerous workshops in most European countries, the USA and Australia. Over the last 30 years he has published numerous choral arrangements and compositions that are sung by choirs throughout Europe. He is founder and director of "Aarhus Vocal Festival", the largest jazz choir festivals in Europe. Workshop Jazz Choral Conducting The internationally renowned conductor Jens Johansen, founder, arranger and conductor of the award-winning ensemble Vocal Line, directs the conducting workshop Jazz Choral Conducting, where all the major fields of jazz choral conducting a training techniques (e.g. from Groove to Performance) will be trained and directly can be reacted with a studio choir. This workshop is a cooperation with the Arbeitskreis Musik in der Jugend (AMJ). This workshop especially addresses the choirmaster who want to study solutions for special sampling methodological and stylistic issues in working with jazz choirs and vocal ensembles. 2
UNDUZO is one of the most innovative professional a cappella vocal bands with a varied mix of original compositions, arrangements and modern entertainment with stylish choreographies and performance ideas. The main winners of the Kleinkunstpreis of Baden-Württemberg 2016 and winners of the second prize at the German A-cappella Bundescontest and other successes in competitions (including the international a cappella competition in Leipzig, composition competition Gebt uns Songs of the German Choral Association and Vokal total 2014) Unduzo has thrilled a plurality of judges and the trade press. Workshop concept: From a song idea to the choral performance The repertoire in the choir scene is, except few expectations, rather unilaterally. The focus is on works of other composers, sung as originally as possible. Own songs incite a higher liability and can be vocally furnished suitably for the ensemble and still are a rarity in the vocal sector. In addition, new creative possibilities open up to the singers in song writing. The following series of workshops by UNDUZO is ideally intended to be visited completely. There s also the possibility to visit the workshops Rehearsing the premiere and Staging/Performance only as a choral singer. Workshop Songwriting This workshop explains the various ways in which a song can be designed. People tick differently in song writing. The first one requires the exciting musical idea, another a certain rhythm, and yet another is based on rhyme form. Various ways are presented; at the end of this section, one finished song with different parts will be recorded. Workshop Arrangement In this workshop, the song of the previous songwriting workshop is arranged. The workshop follows the classical criteria: cast, number of singers, vocal range, etc. At the end of this section will be a complete noted arrangement of the participants and a sound version of the song. 3
It is recommended to visit this workshop together with the workshop Staging/Performance. Both workshops together make you ready for the final presentation! Workshop Rehearsing the premiere With singers of different vocal groups, the song will be practiced ready for concert. Very different challenges arise here compared to already known pieces. Besides the scores, the composers can interfere and explain their ideas more detailed. Workshop Staging/ Performance A concert is not only a listening experience, but always also a visual experience! Based on the thus far completed written, arranged and rehearsed piece a stage performance will be developed here. This involves a lot of basics: How do I manage presence for the audience? How can I support the acoustic effect of the original songs visually? What movements look good, which are embarrassing? Linda Jesse, choreographer, singer at Unduzo and trained musical performer gives you valuable tips for choirs and vocal ensembles, such as how to create an appealing stage experience out of good music. And last but not least in this section the possibilities of sound will be developed together with the sound engineer Matthias Klingner. 4
Alexandra Ziegler works as a vocal coach with an own studio in Frankfurt. She is an experienced choir director, Germany s demand coach for choirs with a focus on pop and jazz music and moreover she is an authorized teacher of Complete Vocal Technique and singer from Complete Vocal Institute in Copenhagen. She forms numerous courses continuing educators and educational experts for music education work and designs training courses and trainings for various institutions. Workshop Introduction to the Complete Vocal Technique with focus on the application in a pop and jazz choir After the holidays, the voice needs training again, to cope with all requirements of the new choral season. In particular, the support gets its intense workout in this course. Who does not know CVT, learns the fundamental concepts to the modes and their application. Workshop Get out of the head voice trap a course for high female voices As a soprano in a choir, you are used to train the head voice into the highest heights. In a popchoir often, a very different sound is asked, powerful, direct and often a bit deeper. Many singers experience in this situation their break and it feels like if you have two voices, a loud deep one and a thin high one. With the CVT, we specifically want to deal with this phenomenon and find a coherent solution with a matching sound. Stefan Kalmer School musician, jazz violinist, conductor of the Jazz & PopChors of the Munich Conservatory, founder and leader of the rock & jazz choir "VoicesInTime" (in the category Jazz prizewinner of renowned competitions Graz, 2005 Arnhem NL, 2006 German Choir Competition, "Let the Peoples Sing" - Winner Open Choir Category 2013) - arranger, composer, judge and editor in the field of choral music. Additionally appeared "Music with her silver sound - 30 fresh canon with an audio CD of Oliver Gies". Workshop Pop & Crossover in an a-cappella Choir Stefan Kalmer will present and develop i.a. highlights from his repertoire of VoicesInTime in various occupations and different degrees of difficulty (easy to medium). This workshop will be enriched with ideas for creative designs for his canons from the collection Music with her silver sound which mostly can be implemented with the involvement of the audience. Of course, some of his own arrangements and compositions will be part of this workshop. Workshop Reading Session Get to know, sing, read and listen to canons and choral music Choral music and the possibility to develop these with material from editions of Music with her silver sound, Bosse Hits a cappella and Chor aktuell 2. 5
Julian Knörzer For over fifteen years Julian Knörzer is active as a beatboxer in various formations and an international lecture. By working with the "Jazz Choir Freiburg" and the group Unduzo he specialized in the accompaniment of a cappella ensembles. Since 2011, he teaches Beatboxing at the Musikhochschule Freiburg and since 2016 jazz singing. As a beatbox producer he worked on CD productions with groups like Maybepop and High Five. With his bands Acoustic Instinct and Unduzo he received numerous international prizes, e.g the Zelt-Musik-Festival Preis and 2016 the Kleinkunstpreis Baden-Württemberg. Patrick Heil After studying music education at the Musikhochschule Freiburg and jazz and popular music at the MHS Trossingen he is now winner of the 10 th Bundeswettbewerbs Schulpraktisches Klavierspiel, lecturer at the Jazz und Rock Schule Freiburg and director of various choirs like Europäischer Chor Freiburg e.v. and jazz and pop choir Rhythmix in Freiburg. In addition, he directs several workshops on improvisation and songwriting, is a singer, songwriter and arranger of the a-cappella group Unduzo and works as a sound engineer. Workshop Beatboxing in a choir: Introduction Human Beatboxing has since several years an integral part of youth culture and excites equally older generations. In this workshop, the fundamental concepts are developed to produce beats with mouth and voice. The basics: from the first sounds to the first patterns From Swing to Dubstep: simple patterns for the most important styles Technique: proper handling of microphone and PA Notation: read beats and notes Curiosity and joy on experimenting things are required. Basically, what sounds good is right! Workshop Beatboxen: Advanced Version Beatboxing and Vocal Percussion play an important role in today s choirs and vocal groups of modern a cappella. This workshop offers the a cappella beatboxer a practical guide to accompany an ensemble perfectly: From Swing to Dubstep: special sounds and typical patterns are learned or refreshed Groove-Optimization: looking for that special something for each beat Creativity: from simple beats to music Various escort techniques can be tried out to 17 Loop songs of variety styles (from CD or sung by the participants). Curiosity and joy on experimenting things are required. Basically, what sounds good is right! 6
Torsten Krill As a winner of many international prizes the drummer and producer, Torsten Krill is all around the world when it comes to music. His artistic range is reflected in the diversity of his musical partners, with whom he is heard on over 70 CDs, among Herb Ellis, Richie Beirach, and many more he was awarded the jazz prize of Baden-Württemberg and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, 2012 the German audio book proze (Hörkules) for the music production of Simon Beckett decay. Since autumn 2014 he works as an academy lecturer at the Landesmusikakademie Ochsenhausen. Workshop Musical electronics and the voice Creative use of digital media live and in the studio This is not a course for technic freaks but for singers who are interested and love to experiment with digital technology. No technical previous knowledge needed! In this workshop basics of loop devices, samplers, MIDI controllers, effect devices, DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) etc. are going to be presented and explained. The focus is on the practical and creative use of digital technology, both live and in the studio, to thereby expand the sonic possibilities of the voice. Workshop Rhythm training for vocalists with voice, body, Cajon and small percussion This Workshop is about Groove, phrasing, improvisation, body sensation and the development of certain rhythms and rhythmic figures that are practiced by body percussion, chanting, the Cajon and various small percussion instruments. In addition, the creative cooperation of singers/vocalists and percussionists/drummers in jazz and pop music will be explained. 7
Matthias Klingner After graduating, he did a training as specialist for event technology in Freiburg. During his training he already was very busy as a sound and event technician, for instance as a mixer for the Jazz Choir Freiburg with numerous concerts and tours. Since 2014, he is the group engineer from Unduzo (developing of several panel setups, live loops, video and in-ear sound, and many more). Workshop Sound equipment for chiors When asked about the perfect sound often there are different opinions. That fore this workshop wants to clarify how different formations can be amplified, based on different stylistics. Besides some basics of audio engineering, this workshop is also about the feasibility of various sound ideas and dealing with local engineering crews to find a common language for future sound check. This involves issues such as: What stylistics do we use with our choir and how can we amplify them best? What kind of sound do we want? What of that can be implemented realistically? How do I present the local technician my vision so that he can implement them according to our expectations? Workshop Live use Looping with Ableton Live With Ableton Live, complex arrangements with automated loops, timed effects and many other gizmos can be realized and performed live. After a short introduction to Ableton Live you will learn its practical use and as well as the problems and pitfalls that result from it. 8
