2 Jazz day with the Paulus Schafer Trio, Wednesday 4th October Lunchtime recital, 12.50pm, Main Hall Workshop session, 4.00pm-8.00pm, Student Common Room (Old Chapel) We are very excited to welcome back world class jazz guitarist Paulus Schafer and his trio who will treat their audience to a Parisian café style lunchtime recital in Main Hall. Following their recital, the musicians will introduce students to the rhythms, sounds and idioms of Gypsy Jazz in the style of Django Reinhard, in a practical and informative workshop session. Talent Show, Thursday 12 October, 7.30pm Morris Theatre The talent show provides an opportunity for students from all year groups to showcase their performing talents in a light hearted manner and in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. This informal event is student led and makes for a refreshing break from the academic studies. Admission arrangements TBA

These lunchtime music events are presented in a relaxed and informal environment in the company of friends and members of staff. Expect a wide range of acts and music to cater for all diets! BTEC F4 Concert, Thursday 19th October, 7.20pm Student Common Room (Old Chapel) Join us in welcoming our new BTEC students to Concord College with a special debut recital which will provide our musical newcomers with an opportunity to demonstrate their performance skills and musical talents.

4 Songwriting workshop with Grammy nominated artist Becki Biggins, Wednesday 1st November Lunchtime recital, 12.50pm, Main Hall Workshop session, pm, Student Common Room (Old Chapel) We are thrilled to welcome to Concord College Grammy nominated jazz singer, songwriter and saxophonist Becki Biggins and her trio. Shrewsbury born Becki is a charismatic and successful artist who has enjoyed an illustrious career with many sold out performances at many of the UK s top jazz clubs. She has had three No.1 US albums and has been awarded American Billboard s Best Jazz Artist amongst other awards and prizes. Following her lunchtime recital, Becki will be running an open songwriting workshop on how to turn musical ideas into a song and a song into a track on itunes. The workshop will be suited to anyone with a keen interest on songwriting, music production and self-promotion. Vocal workshop with soprano Katerina Mina, Wednesday 8th November Lunchtime recital, 12.50pm, Main Hall Workshop session, pm, Student Common Room (Old Chapel) It gives us great pleasure to welcome back the London based opera soprano Katerina Mina. Katerina performs extensively as a soloist in England, Germany, Russia, U.S.A, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, Greece, Cyprus, the Middle East and Far East. She is the recipient of the Russian Federation s Medal for Peace and Friendship. Forthcoming engagements include a recording collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, a performance at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and singing the role of Elisabetta in Don Carlo in a new opera film production by Enzo Sisti, conducted by Plácido Domingo. Following her lunchtime recital, Katerina will lead an open workshop session on singing technique, stage craft and interpretation. The workshop will be of interest to singers of all ability levels.

6 Winter concert Music and Dance from Around the World Friday 17th November, 7.30pm, Morris Theatre, Concord College () Saturday 18th November, 7.30pm, Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury One of the most exciting and popular events in the school calendar, sees our students returning once again to Shrewsbury s largest indoor venue, Theatre Severn, to perform Music and Dance from Around the World in aid of The Shropshire Federation of Women s Institutes and Rotary Charities. From Europe to the Far East, Concord students aim to showcase their cultural diversity as they take to the stage performing in traditional costume and on authentic folk instruments. Highlights from previous years have included a dance inspired by Chinese opera, a bamboo dance from Sarawak, a Scottish ceildh and a Greek song performed by a large choir formed by singers from Concord and Bicton Primary School.

7 Each year the concert attracts audiences from Shrewsbury and the wider Shropshire area including VIP guest the Mayor of Shrewsbury and is successful in raising much needed funds for local charities. Concord students are looking forward to sharing their vibrant global culture at Shropshire s beautiful theatre. Concord College Winter Fayre, Sunday 26th November, from 2.00pm Sports Hall and Main Hall No need to travel far for your Christmas gifts! Come and enjoy a Christmas themed shopping experience on Concord s beautiful grounds. With a large range of gifts to choose from, food stalls from around the world and musical appetisers provided by Concord musicians, this popular seasonal event has something for everyone to enjoy.

9 Traditional English Carols by the Christmas tree performed by Of One Accord choir, Tuesday 5 December, 8.10pm Main Hall Arguably carols evoke the true spirit of Christmas like nothing else. Come and enjoy traditional Christmas carols sung by one of Shrewsbury s best vocal ensembles. With mince pies and mulled wine available, this event is going to be a Christmas hit! Christmas themed lunchtime recital, Wednesday 6th December, 12.20pm Dining Hall Enjoy festive music provided by Concord musicians during the lunchtime hour in the dining hall. There will be an opportunity to join in with some carol singing too!

10 Concord College Music Enrichment Programme (All sessions are free unless otherwise stated. Abbreviation symbols: T.I.C = teacher in charge) Chamber Ensemble Autumn and Spring terms as advertised Theatre T.I.C: Mr Kokkinos The chamber ensemble welcomes anyone who plays a musical instrument of any standard. No audition required, just come along and join in. Rehearsals take place in the theatre weekly preparing repertoire for our Autumn and Spring concerts, external concerts and charity events. Musical instrument tuition Weekly after lessons as advertised Lessons available to all upon request Do you already play an instrument? Do you want to learn to play one? Receive one to one tuition by expert teachers on piano, voice and all string, brass, wind and percussion instruments. Lessons are charged extra at 34 per hour. Students normally have one half hour session per week in preparation for the ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall or LCM exams, or simply for fun. Successful exam candidates receive a certificate as recognition of their efforts. At higher levels (Grade 6 and above), the examination results count towards the UCAS point tariff, used for entry to UK universities. Lesson application forms can be downloaded on our Music VLE page or can be collected from the Music office. Choir/Chamber Choir Autumn and Spring terms as advertised in MB6 ( Large Music Room) T.I.C: Miss Perrins If you enjoy singing you can join one of our choir ensembles. The chamber choir, which runs as an extension of the college choir, consists of singers of about voices and is open to those wishing to deepen their knowledge of ensemble singing and of the vocal repertoire. Wind ensemble Autumn and Spring terms as advertised Theatre T.I.C: Mrs Blakeman The wind ensemble welcomes anyone who plays a wind/brass instrument of any standard. No audition required, just come along and join in. Rehearsals take place in the theatre on a weekly basis preparing repertoire for our Autumn and Spring concerts. Take part and have fun. Jazz Band Autumn and Spring terms as advertised in MU2 (Drum Room) T.I.C: Mr Rainbow & Mr Stevens If you have an interest in singing, playing, improvising, or accompanying in a jazz setting please come along to jazz band. The band welcomes a range of instrumentalists, drummers and bass players as well as brass, wind, keyboard/piano and vocalists. No auditions necessary. The Jazz band prepares repertoire ready for our internal concerts in Autumn and Spring terms. ABRSM exams Theory and Aural preparation classes Time and location Information on Music notice boards T.I.C: Mr Manford These sessions are available to anyone who is preparing for ABRSM theory or practical exams. You will learn all the music theory you need to pass your exams and work on improving your aural and listening skills which form part of the ABRSM practical examination syllabus.

11 Music competitions. Subject to consultation with the Head of Music or via recommendation by a music teacher Where appropriate, keen musicians are encouraged to enter for regional or national level music competitions. Concord students regularly meet success in these and often win prizes or reach the final stages. Please head to our VLE competitions page for further information and how to apply or speak to a member of staff from the music department. Competitions currently running include: 1. Shropshire Music Service County Showcase competition (county level) 2. Shropshire Music Service Musician of the Year competition (county level) 3. Gregynog Young Musician (international level) 4. Rotary Young Musician (national level) Symphony Orchestra experience T.I.C: Mr Kokkinos The symphony orchestra experience is available to more advanced string and percussion players (ABRSM Grade 8+), who want to experience playing as part of a large symphony orchestra. The orchestras give three concerts a year, in late Autumn, Spring and Summer, performing repertoire that ranges from the Classical to 20th century music as well as music from the big screen. Shropshire Youth Orchestra (membership fee applies): Alternate Saturdays pm Band Coaching Autumn and Spring Terms as advertised MB6 T.I.C: Mr Rainbow & Mr Stevens Band coaching is open to pop musicians who want to improve their ensemble and stage skills and build on their confidence in preparation for our public concerts which take place throughout the year. The sessions are popular with budding guitarists, drummers and singers. They are led by Mr Rainbow and Mr Stevens who are both experienced gigging and session musicians and with a long and extensive experience in running Rock School sessions and vocational performing courses. SAMBA Drums Band Autumn Term, Tuesdays pm Theatre T.I.C: Mrs Peta Yapp SAMBA band introduces participants to the musical sounds of Rio De Janeiro and Brazil. Rio De Janeiro being most famous for the world s best street carnival and its SAMBA music. It is a fun filled activity with high energy moves, beats and rhythms and big drums! The sessions provide a real sense of South American culture while preparing music for our concerts in Autumn and Spring Terms. Music Technology club Summer Term as advertised in MB2 T.I.C: Mr Kokkinos The club is open to anyone who wants to explore making music with computers or record music using our professional multi track recording studio facility. You will learn to use a range of the latest sequencing and notation software to produce and release your own tracks in any style you desire, from Pop and Hip-Hop, to Rn B and Dubstep.
