5 MESSAGE FROM THE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE Welcome to the 23rd Biennial Milton Music Festival. The Milton Music Teachers Association is excited to present our 2016 Festival Syllabus. As Canada s fastest growing community, Milton is also home to a dynamic and engaged arts community of which the Milton Music Festival plays an integral part. Since 1980, the Milton Music Festival has provided talented musicians of all ages an opportunity to come together to gain valuable performance experience and guidance from professional adjudicators. The 2016 Festival Syllabus includes over 50 individual classes for piano, voice, guitar, woodwinds, brass and ensembles. This year s festival will take place over two weeks from May 2 to May 13 concluding with our Grand Festival Concert on Sunday May 15, This year we are delighted to offer online registration to our 2016 Festival participants. To register please visit The deadline for registration is February 1, Members of the Milton Music Teachers Association have organized two fabulous weeks of classes to bring together students to perform for, learn from and be inspired by adjudicators and each other. We have selected adjudicators with diverse backgrounds in order to provide students with a unique festival experience. We look forward to seeing you in May 2016 for a fantastic event! 7 RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. All matters not dealt with in these Rules and Regulations will be referred to the Festival Committee. Their decisions will be final. 2. All classes are open to amateurs. An amateur is defined as a person whose principal means of livelihood is not obtained from the profession of music, with the exception of noncompetitive classes. 3. The Festival Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry or cancel any class. With these exceptions, entry fees will not be refunded. 4. The Festival Committee reserves the right to divide or combine classes. 5. Instrumental and vocal participants must provide their own accompanist. 6. An original copy of the music must be supplied for the participant (if music is not memorized), accompanist and adjudicator. 7. No photocopies will be allowed unless authorized by the publisher and initialed by a Festival Committee member. 8. The use of cameras or video recorders is not permitted during performance or adjudication. AGE LIMIT CLASSES In age limit classes, participants must be that age or younger as of December 31, TEST PIECES 1. RCM stands for the Royal Conservatory of Music. CC stands for Conservatory Canada. 2. All pieces chosen by the participant are subject to approval by the Festival Committee. 3. Participants may not enter the same piece in more than one class and may not enter more than once in the same class, unless otherwise stated in the class description. 4. Participants may not enter a grade level in which they have been previously examined, with the exception of the RCM April 2016 exam session. Participants must enter at their current grade level of study; however, they may enter one class at a higher level. 5. All test pieces excluding Duets, Duos, Trios, Ensembles, Masterclasses, Brass and Woodwinds must be memorized. The use of music will result in adjudication only. No mark will be awarded. 6. Repeats are to be omitted unless otherwise specified. Da Capo and Dal Segno Signs are to be observed. 7. Test pieces must be performed in the prescribed key except in vocal classes 13 years & under. The participant may sing in any key, and transpositions may be made accordingly, unless otherwise stated. SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS 1. To be eligible for a scholarship or an award, participants must perform a minimum of two competitive solos in the same discipline. Milton Music Festival 7

Winners of scholarships and awards will be chosen by the adjudicators and need not necessarily be first place winners but may be participants who, in the opinion of the adjudicator, show the greatest potential talent. 3. All scholarships and awards will be presented at the Grand Festival Concert scheduled for Sunday, May 15, To maintain a well balanced concert not all scholarship and award winners will be invited to perform at the final concert. 5. Students invited to perform at the Grand Festival Concert will be chosen on the recommendation of the Adjudicator and contacted by a member of the Festival Committee. 1. Applications received after this date may be processed for an additional fee of $20.00 provided there are still class times available. 3. Please do not staple cheques to the entry forms. THE MILTON MUSIC FESTIVAL NEEDS YOU! Please consider volunteering at the Milton Music Festival. The Festival is always in need of additional volunteers during Festival weeks. Duties are clearly outlined ahead of time and include selling programs, directing and registering participants and assisting adjudicators. You won t regret helping out and listening to great performances at the same time. 45 ABOUT THE MILTON MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION The Milton Music Teachers Association is an association of independent professional music teachers founded in The purpose of the association is to work co-operatively as teachers to provide opportunities to foster and recognize musical excellence in all our students; to encourage and inspire one another as teachers and musicians and to provide opportunities for professional development.
