2 GENERAL RULES PLEASE READ GENERAL AND SECTIONAL RULES BEFORE COMPLETING ENTRY FORMS The Music Festival is open to amateurs only. For this purpose, AMATEUR is defined by the British and International Federation of Festivals as follows: Any person whose principal means of livelihood is not obtained from performing or teaching work in music, speech, elocution or drama; even if he or she from time to time accepts a fee, stipend or honorarium for dramatic or musical services rendered. 1. Every entrant under the age of 18 years will be considered amateur. This rule does not apply to conductors. 2. Entries can be accepted only on the prescribed form and MUST BE SUBMITTED ON OR BEFORE 31st JANUARY A separate entry form must be used for each class. THE CLOSING DATE WILL BE STRICTLY ADHERED TO. 3. Entry fees cannot be refunded except in accordance with Rule Competitors must be of the age specified on the date of the Festival. 5. The Committee reserves the right to appoint additional adjudicators; to limit the number of entrants in any one class; and to arrange for a preliminary test if necessary. The Committee shall make alterations or regulations as shall be deemed necessary in the conduct of the Festival. 6. Notification that the timetable is on the website will be sent by or post approximately 3 weeks before the festival 7. Entrants must not commence until asked to do so by the Adjudicator who is empowered to stop the performance at any point. THE ADJUDICATOR S DECISION WILL BE FINAL 8. Prizes will be withheld in whole or in part if in the opinion of the Adjudicator sufficient merit is not shown. 9. The Committee reserves the right, should circumstances arise which in their opinion render it impracticable to hold the Festival, to cancel all arrangements in which case entrance fees will be returned. 10. The decision of the Committee in all matters arising out of or not specially provided for in these Regulations is final. 11. The Festival is bound by copyright law and cannot allow any photography or recordings, which are absolutely forbidden during the performances or Adjudication. 12. NO SMOKING or ALCOHOL on School premises. With the exception of bottled water, no eating or drinking in competition rooms. 13. Neither the Festival nor the School authorities accept any responsibility for property lost, stolen or damaged during the Festival. 14. ALL TROPHIES awarded in 2017 must be returned by 31st January Failure to do so may result in a competitor being barred from entry into the 2018 competition Light refreshments will be available 2

3 Wirral Festival of Music, Speech and Drama 2018 (Formerly Bromborough Festival) M U S I C Classes will be held on Friday evening 16 th March and all day Saturday 17th March 2018 (according to the number of entries received) at BIRKENHEAD HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMY 86 DEVONSHIRE PLACE, BIRKENHEAD CH43 1TY MUSIC RULES 1. THE ORDER OF PERFORMANCE will be by ballot and will be given in the programme. 2. SOLO CLASSES: Entrants may perform only once in any particular class. 3. ENSEMBLE CLASSES: No entrant for a duet, quartet or other ensemble class including choirs will be allowed to perform more than once in the same class. 4. OWN CHOICE CLASSES: Entrants may not present the same piece in 2 consecutive years. A copy of the music for the use of the Adjudicator must be handed to the Adjudicator s clerk prior to the competition. If an Official Accompanist is required, A COPY OF THE MUSIC MUST BE SENT TO THE MUSIC SECRETARY BY 31 st JANUARY TIME LIMITS in these classes will be strictly adhered to and competitors who over run will be penalised. The TITLE and COMPOSER of the piece selected MUST be clearly stated on the entry form 5. No performer may present the same piece in more than one class. 6. OFFICIAL ACCOMPANISTS will be available free of charge in music classes, but performers may provide their own if desired. Competitors will be informed of the name of their official accompanist on request to the Music Secretary. Official Accompanists: Rosemary McPherson B.Ed. (Hons) ( ) Stephanie Howard, B.A. (Hons), ARCM ( ) 7. We comply with the scale of marks as recommended by the British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech. To be awarded a trophy a Performer must gain at least 85 marks. Performers gaining the three highest marks in the class will be awarded a certificate. 8. Competitors are advised that ONLY the editions stated in the Syllabus will be accepted by the Adjudicators. If difficulty is experienced in obtaining the specified music, competitors should contact the Music Secretary IN GOOD TIME. 9. Time limits will include any spoken introduction or commentary. 10. Requests for a class to be held on a particular day will be considered, but cannot be guaranteed. No refund will be payable WARNING: Prosecution may be taken against any competitor using unauthorized photocopies of copyright material. 3

4 James Kirby GRSM, ARAM MUSIC ADJUDICATORS 2018 As a soloist and chamber musician James performs regularly throughout the UK and Europe. His recital work includes appearances at major concert series in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Holland, the Czech Republic, Bermuda, Hong Kong and Malaysia and in the UK at Wigmore Hall and the Edinburgh and Aldeburgh festivals. Having studied at the Moscow Conservatoire (during which time he reached the semi finals of the International Tchaikovsky Competition) he returns to perform in the former Soviet Union every year. Highlights have included performances at the Sakharov Festival in Nizhny Novgorod and the Omsk Festival. His orchestral performances include concertos with the Moscow, Khazakh and Belorussian Symphony Orchestras, and the Arad and Oradea Philharmonic Orchestras (Romania), and the English and Scottish Chamber Orchestras, at venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Symphony Hall, Birmingham, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire and Astana Opera House. He has performed both Brahms Concertos in Russia and Romania. He has been a member of the Barbican Piano Trio since 1992, performing regularly at Wigmore Hall and in major UK festivals and concert series, and throughout Europe and the USA. Particular highlights include a performance at Carnegie Recital Hall and many cycles of Beethoven s complete Piano Trios including one in the Master Concert Series at Wigmore Hall. The Trio s repertoire consists of over seventy works and their discography includes trios by Lalo, Tchaikovsky, Taneyev, Rachmaninov and Schnittke. James has worked with the Vanburgh Quartet, BBC Singers, Lydia Mordkovitch and the mezzo soprano Sarah Connolly and has made several recordings for Chandos. He is a dedicated teacher and enjoys posts at the Royal Welsh College in Cardiff, Royal Holloway, University of London and is Artist in residence at the University of Hull. He is also an Honorary Professor at the Rachmaninov Institute, Tambov, Russia where he makes frequent visits to perform concertos, give recitals and masterclasses and lead chamber music courses. He has served on the Juries of several international Piano competitions, most recently in Romania, Latvia, Russia and Slovenia and gives many masterclasses, both in the UK and overseas. He is in considerable demand as an adjudicator and is a member of the ABRSM examining panel, which has taken him to Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Indonesia and many European countries. 4

5 Sam Dunkley MA, B. Mus (Hons), FRSA Sam Dunkley is founder director of Performing Arts etc Ltd a company which delivers impactful, participatory arts projects with adults and young people. They put on musicals in a week for theatres, music hubs and schools, write new shows with young people about the district where they live Bradford the Musical and deliver songwriting workshops in schools across the country. Sam is a Yorkshire based music education consultant and community musician and since graduating from the University of Huddersfield, he has developed a broad portfolio career. He has sung for Opera North, conducted at the Royal Albert Hall, presented at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, composed songs for the BBC, trained teachers in schools and music hubs, written songs in prisons, and conducted singing and signing choirs. He is Chair of Sound Sense the professional association of community musicians. He is an Adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals. Matt Lammin Matt studied Music and Popular Music at the University of Liverpool and then went on to do a Masters degree in Music Performance (Pop Vocals & piano) at The University of Salford. He is a music classroom teacher and singing teacher at Birkenhead High School Academy. Matt has been a member of Sense of Sound Singers since 2005 and he has enjoyed many highlights during his time with them: supporting Russell Watson on his date tour, performing on the live BBC television show, Last Choir Standing, backing Seal and Bon Jovi at the Royal Variety Show and performing with an array of critically acclaimed European artists at the Nuits de Fourviere festival in Lyon and Paris in Matt is a also choir director himself; his longest-running choir, Together Pop Choir performed twice at the Echo Arena at Star Wars Live with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and at Lennon Remembered, a commemorative concert held thirty years after John Lennon s death; the choir also reached X Factor bootcamp in As an accomplished arranger, his pop choir arrangements are performed all over the world; Matt also writes commissioned pieces for choirs 5

6 Robert Marsh MA, FRSA, FRCO, ARCM Robert Marsh began his musical career as a Chorister with the Manchester based Organist Eric Chadwick, the celebrated Chorus Master to Sir John Barbirolli at the Hallé and Sir Malcolm Sargant at the Huddersfield Choral Society. He was educated at Salford Grammar School, the Royal Manchester College of Music, Royal Northern College of Music (where he also studied the Violin and Viola), Royal College of Music, Keble College, Oxford and Jesus College, Cambridge. He made his professional début as an Organist with the Choir of Winchester Cathedral in a performance of J.S. Bach s St. Matthew Passion directed by Martin Neary, the first ever performance of this work in Great Britain to use period instruments and original pitch. Over more than thirty years he has held many school, university, conservatoire, church and cathedral appointments playing the organ in many parts of the world, most memorably at Westminster Abbey, York Minster, Eton College and on two of the largest organs ever constructed at Luxembourg Cathedral and at the West Point Military Academy. He has accompanied many choirs, including the Hallé and served Ripon Cathedral for many years as Assistant Organist and Director of Music conducting the first performance of a new opera for children, The White Doe by Alan Ridout. As a Conductor, he has worked with the English Northern Philharmonia, the National Band of the Royal British Legion, The King s Own Division Normandy Band and the Manchester Camerata. Highlights of his work have included Handel s Messiah, J.S. Bach s B minor Mass and St. John Passion and Fauré s Requiem at the Leith Hill Musical Festival As Director of Music at Reigate Grammar School, Robert was responsible for founding the School s highly successful tradition of Musical Theatre productions. The comedian, actor and children s author David Walliams took part in one of these productions as a pupil at the School, and he and Robert have made a television documentary film about it for ITV. Robert has led choral workshops for the National Association of Choirs and travels as an Examiner and Adjudicator to Turkey, Malta, Italy, India, Greece and Vietnam. He returned to India in 2016 to examine, lead workshops and address a conference. He is a published author and composer and has served as Warden of the Incorporated Society of Musicians in Education section. He is Organist of Christ Church, Skipton and Conductor of Knaresborough Choral Society. 6

19 WIRRAL FESTIVAL OF MUSIC, SPEECH AND DRAMA CHILD PROTECTION POLICY The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech work for amateur festivals everywhere to help create thousands of educational performance opportunities for children and young people each year. The Federation, and our member Festivals, are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them. This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers, students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and our member Festivals. We recognise that: 1. the welfare of the child/young person is paramount 2. all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse 3. working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young people s welfare. The purpose of the policy: 1. to provide protection for the children and young people who participate in our festivals, including the children of festival members 2. to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should adopt in the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or beat risk of, harm We will seek to safeguard children and young people by: 1. valuing them, listening to and respecting them 2. adopting child protection guidelines through procedures and safe working practice for staff and volunteers 3. recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made sharing information about child protection and safe working practice with children, parents, staff and volunteers 4. sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and involving parents and children appropriately 5. providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision, support and training. The Federation will review this policy each year in November in line with Safe Network guidance or sooner in light of any changes in legislation or guidance. All changes will be communicated to our member Festivals in time for the start of the new Festival year. Delivered in partnership with 19

20 Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone The Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and procedures. 1. A single, definitive Child Protection Policy adopted by all Federation Festivals. 2. One or more designated Festival Safeguarding Officers (FSO) appointed for each Federation Festival. Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers. Including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child. 4. Appropriate recruitment and induction procedures for all new Festival staff and volunteers responsible for providing safe environments for everyone attending / performing at a Federation Festival. 5. All Festival stewards wear a name badge. All teachers/parents/guardians/carers are asked to report all incidents of any nature to anyone Festival name badge. All reported incidents will be handled in accordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection best practice advice. In addition we will ensure the availability of a quiet area / room where concerns can be expressed in private. 6. For the duration of the Festival all teachers/parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the continuous care and supervision of their own children/pupils/vulnerable adults. If they are unable to attend personally, they must delegate their responsibilities to an identified adult and ensure that their children/pupils/vulnerable adults are aware of the identity and name of the person responsible for their care. This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues, performance, practice and changing areas that may be provided. 7. No unauthorised photography or video recording is allowed at our Festivals. Where parents/guardians/carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child/pupil/vulnerable adult is not included in official authorised photos. 8. Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If this is the case we ask the responsible teachers/parents/guardians/carers to contact the Festival prior to arrival. The Festival actively seeks wherever possible to meet these needs, but must know beforehand in order to prepare support or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion. 9. The Festival s Child Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone is published explicitly in our Syllabus, Programme and on our website. By completing and signing the entry form all parents / guardians / carers and teachers of entrants under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have obtained) the necessary consents for the entrants to take part in the Festival. Without consent the entry to the Festival cannot be accepted. 20
