OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION For inquiries regarding musical instrument tuition not listed in this handbook, please contact the Music Administrator, Mrs Moira Cross on or Cancellation of Instrumental Music lessons Because of staffing and timetabling constraints one term s notice in writing is required if a boy wishes to withdraw from instrumental music tuition. Class Music Scotch College runs a comprehensive Years 1 12 class music programme which complements the school s instrumental music programme. The course is designed to develop boys aural perception skills and to increase awareness about music literature and composition. The Senior School Music Curriculum consists of year-long programmes from Years 8 12 and introduces boys to a developmental sequence of music skills which includes singing; instrumental performance; improvisation; reading; listening; writing; responding and creating. Students learn through a well established music teaching approach which incorporates the use of solfège (hand signs). Students understand the relevance of music in their daily lives and study the relationship between music, politics and society. Choir Senior School: Boys enrolled in class music in Years 8 12 will be invited to attend weekly rehearsals of a Senior School Choir as part of their course. Any Senior School boy who has an interest in singing, whether enrolled in class music or not, is most welcome to join the Choir. Junior School: All Year 3, 4 and 5 students will attend regular weekly Choir rehearsals. Boys in Years 6 and 7 may choose to join the Junior School Senior Choir. All choir rehearsals are scheduled to take place before or after school. Music Laboratory One of the excellent resources available to boys in Class Music is the Music Keyboard Lab. This facility is equipped with a complete range of computers, midi keyboards and other audio gear, along with a comprehensive suite of music learning and creation software. Ensemble Music This is an essential part of a student s music education at Scotch College. The enjoyable experience of group music making promotes teamwork, listening skills, personal discipline and commitment. Ensemble music enables boys to gain confidence and self-pride through their participation in the many public music performances throughout each year. Participation in Ensembles Enrolment in weekly instrumental lessons (school-based or private) is essential for a student to be permitted to participate in school ensembles. Rehearsals These are held on a weekly basis to ensure the ongoing progress and development of each ensemble. As with any team endeavour, it is essential that boys attend all scheduled weekly rehearsals to optimise performances. Jazz Ensembles Participation in the School s Jazz ensembles is conditional on a student s concurrent participation in another school music ensemble (e.g. Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, etc). Auditions Placement into senior ensembles is determined by a boy s demonstrated level of skill on his instrument. Auditions for Senior Ensembles are held in Winter Term in preparation for the new school year.

Concerts Concerts and special performance opportunities are scheduled into the School s annual calendar of events. Solo and ensemble music performances are made available through formal concerts, music festivals, and special events at the School and in the wider community. Junior School musicians are encouraged to play solo or in groups at Junior School assemblies. Concert Uniform Concert uniform for Senior School musicians is the official black shirt with Scotch College logo embroidered pocket (available from the Senior School Music Office) to be worn with black trousers (not jeans) and black shoes and socks. Storage of instruments The storage of instruments in special music lockers and the Musical Instrument Storeroom is available. Parents may consider taking out private insurance cover for their son s own musical instrument(s). Music Excursions Music tours, excursions and incursions are arranged from time to time. Occasionally, intensive rehearsal periods are scheduled in the lead up to significant concerts. These help establish a cohesive team spirit amongst the student musicians and they are designed to make the most of the FUN and ENJOYMENT associated with music making. Music Exams When boys are ready, teachers will recommend them for formal Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) exams. Such recommendations and the relevant AMEB schedule of fees will be forwarded to you for approval well in advance. Music Scholarships A number of Music Scholarships are available to talented Year 7 and 8 musicians. Music Scholarships pay all music tuition fees through to Year 12, subject to a scholarship holder s satisfactory practice and development on his instrument. Aside from participating in the College s ensembles, Music Scholars will be asked to perform as a soloist from time to time. There is an expectation that Music Scholarship holders will participate as fully as possible in the musical life of the school. This includes being enrolled in class music courses and singing in the choir. Pipes and Drums Students of both pipes and drums are most welcome to participate fully in Music Department ensembles on a mainstream musical instrument. Boys and parents are urged to discuss arrangements for such participation with the Head of Music in the event of any conflict between Pipe Band and other music rehearsal schedules. All inquiries regarding Pipe Band and Pipes and Drums tuition should be directed to the Pipe Band Master, Mr. Norm de Grussa. Fees and Charges Music fees and instrument hire will be charged to accounts at the end of each term. Music Practice Journal All boys enrolled in Instrumental Music will be issued with a Practice Journal in which they will keep a daily record of their practice. It is the Music Department s expectation that this journal will be signed each week by a parent or guardian. Colours Awards in Music are available to Year 11 and 12 musicians Criteria for Colours are as follows: (a) Active member of at least two senior ensembles throughout the year. Attendance in at least 90% of scheduled rehearsals and 100% of all performances (including ceremonial music e.g. Assembly/Chapel when required) unless prior notice of absence is given to the Head of Music (b) Satisfactory attitude towards staff and fellow students (c) Colours may be awarded to a Year 10 who is section leader in a senior ensemble and fulfils the requirements in (a) and (b).

START OF THE YEAR ARRANGEMENTS Ongoing instrumental music students: Lessons recommence in Week 2 of Summer Term. At the end of Week 1, boys should check the Music Department notice boards for lesson timetables for the new term. Ensemble rehearsals commence in Week 2. Rehearsal venues and days/times are published and disseminated in Week 1. Details will also be posted on the Music Department notice boards. The Music Department will assume that in Year 8, a boy will be continuing on the instrument he was learning in Year 7, unless there has been specific notification in writing of his intention to discontinue. Beginners and newly enrolled boys on a musical instrument: Lessons start in Week 2 of the Summer Term. Boys will be informed during Week 1 about their instrumental teacher, lesson venue and times. Boys lesson timetables will also be posted on the Music Department notice boards in Week 1. It is expected that a boy will make a commitment to instrument tuition and practice for a minimum period of one year. Only in exceptional circumstances may a boy be permitted to withdraw from the instrumental music programme during the year. This will be subject to discussion with the Head of Music and one term s notice will be required before lessons cease.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS Individual Individual weekly lessons are of 40 minutes duration. They cost $41.00 per lesson (in 2009). Shared Shared weekly lessons in groups (maximum three in a class) are available in Junior School only. Learning an instrument with others can be very effective and may suit the learning needs of some boys. The cost of a 40 minute shared lesson is $20.50 per lesson (in 2009). As a student s skill level increases he may be reassigned to a more advanced group. Individual lessons may be recommended. Lesson times In the Senior School lesson times are scheduled during school time on a rotational basis. In other words, a student will attend his lesson at a different time from one week to the next to minimise disruptions to his academic class schedule. Where possible, out-of-school lessons will be arranged but priority is given for boys in Year 11 and 12 in order to accommodate their academic workload. Music theory Lessons for music theory can be arranged (out of school hours) for boys who elect to sit for out-of-school music exams (e.g. AMEB). However, it is not a requirement for instrumental students to enrol for theory lessons. Instrument Hire and Maintenance Most instruments (except for guitar, drums and piano) are available for hire through the Music Department for at least the first year of tuition. More expensive instruments (e.g. oboe, bassoon, tuba, etc) may be hired for the duration of a boy s time at Scotch College. Parents are encouraged to consider the purchase of an instrument as soon as possible. Advice about the purchase of good quality musical instruments is available from the Music Department. During the period of hire, a student will be responsible for the care and upkeep of the instrument and the cost of repairs if there is any damage to it. If an instrument is lost or damaged, the Music Department must be informed immediately. In the case of instrument loss or theft, a police report number will be required. The Instrument Hire and Maintenance fee This fee is $300 per annum (non-refundable) per instrument in Charges will be adjusted if a boy commences lessons later in the year. There is no charge for the loan of an instrument for new Year 3 students participating in the fully-inclusive instrumental music course. Instrument accessories such as valve oil, cork grease, rosin and strings (along with method books and practice journals) are available from the Music Department at an additional cost to students.

PROGRESS ON AN INSTRUMENT Attendance It is vital to your son s ongoing progress and development in music to attend lessons regularly. Parents will be informed immediately by mail if their son has not attended a scheduled instrumental music lesson or ensemble rehearsal. Notification of absence 24 hours notice is required if your son is unable to attend a lesson. If a student cannot attend due to sickness please notify Mrs Moira Cross in Music Administration no later than 8.00 am on the lesson day by phoning or MACross@scotch.wa.edu.au. This will allow the school time to notify the instrumental music teacher. A lesson fee will be charged if a student is absent without notice. Regular daily practice is essential to a student s progress on a musical instrument. A Music Practice Journal is issued to each student. This important booklet has four main functions: The Practice Journal is the primary communication tool between parent and music teacher. Boys keep a daily record of their practice and they must have this signed each week by a parent or guardian. So that practice requirements are clear to the student, specific practice details are written into this booklet. As a reflective journal, boys are encouraged to enter personal comments into this book on a regular basis. As a parent, you can enhance your son s prospects for musical growth. Find a suitable place for him to practise preferably equipped with a music stand and any other resources that may be required during the practice session. Help your son to establish a regular practice routine. Beginners, as a general rule, should practise minutes per day. This amount increases with progress. Be encouraging to your son even if the sound being made is not yet music as you know it.
