VISION STATEMENT The Methacton Music Department will encourage all students to achieve their greatest human potential by: valuing a life enriched by the arts embracing our strong tradition of musical excellence developing confidence and compassion through music performance understanding their individual roles as contributors to the global community
9 The importance of music education! Did you know: During musical performance, children must constantly turn their thoughts into action. Thought structures continually have to be updated and adjusted. The combination of constant vigilance and forethought coupled with ever-changing physical responses is an educational experience of unique value. ~Frances Rauscher, Ph.D., University of Wisconsin (1997) There is a direct correlation between improved SAT scores and the length of time spent studying the arts. Those who studied the arts four or more years scored 57 points higher on verbal and 39 points higher on the math portions of the SAT than students with no experience in the arts. ~The College Board (1998) In the journal Neuropsychologia it was reported that students who started musical training before the age of seven had 12% thicker nerve fibers in the corpus cal losum, that part of the brain that carries signals between the two hemispheres. A study at the University of Texas used MRI and EEG exams to measure the electrical activity in the brains of musicians during musical activities and performances.it was found that more areas of the brain were used simultaneously and more neurons were fired per second during the musical activity than for any other activity ever studied. There are no other known academic subjects or human actions which have ever been shown to produce the same stimulus on the human brain and neurological system. ~Society of Neuroscience (1998) The US Department of Labor issues a yearly report urging schools to teach for the future workplace. The skills they recommend (working in teams, communication, creative thinking, and problem solving) are exactly the same as those learned in school music and arts education programs. ~SCANS Report, US Dept of Commerce METHACTON SCHOOL DISTRICT MUSIC DEPARTMENT FACULTY Susan Basalik (Arrowhead E.S. & Skyview U.E.S. orchestra) Traci Bugosh (Woodland E.S. & Skyview U.E.S. band) Maryellen Caldwell (Skyview U.E.S. & Arcola I.S. orchestra) Darcy Lockman (Arcola I.S. general music/chorus) Elizabeth Francisco (Methacton H.S. chorus) Andrea Hahn (Audubon E.S. general music/chorus) Brian Leonard (Skyview U.E.S. & Arcola I.S. band) Darcy Lockman (Skyview U.E.S. general music/chorus) Joyce Magann (Methacton H.S. orchestra) Bret Mascaro (Methacton H.S. band) Eddie McCaffrey (Arcola I.S. general music/chorus) Jeff McCoach (Audubon E.S./Worcester E.S./Eagleville E.S./Arrowhead E.S. band) Natalie Perez (Skyview U.E.S. gen. music/chorus) Sharon Saul (Audubon E.S./Woodland E.S./Eagleville E.S. orchestra) Stephanie Shuey (Worcester E.S. general music/chorus) Michele Sinnott (Arrowhead E.S. general music/chorus) Suzanne Williams (Eagleville E.S. general music/chorus)
