2 The 23 rd Biwako International Flute Competition The purpose of the Biwako International Flute Competition is to seek musicians excelling in the performance of flute the world over, to introduce them to the world stage and to contribute to the progression and improvement of music art. 4 The 23rd Biwako International Flute Competition GENERAL SECTION GUIDELINES Eligibility Those at any age and of any nationality are eligible to apply. Quota of Applicants 160 Competition Schedule First Preliminary May 2 (Wed) 13:30 & May 3 (Thu/Holiday) 10:00* (Subject to change) Second Preliminary May 4 (Fri/Holiday) 15:00** Third Preliminary May 5 (Sat/Holiday) 13:00** Final May 6 (Sun) 11:40 Award Ceremony May 6 (Sun) 15:30 *The starting time of the first preliminary round will be decided and notified after the applications are completed. **The starting time of the second and the third preliminary rounds will be notified at the announcement of the results of the previous round. Required Pieces (Contestants may use sheet music in both preliminary and final rounds.) First Preliminary Round Choose and perform one piece from below omitting repetition. Use the Bärenreiter edition. G. Ph. Telemann Zwölf Fantasien Für Querflöte ohne Bass Second Preliminary Round Play a piece without accompaniment composed in or after If the sheet music is on the market, please write its publisher name in your application form. - If no sheet music is commercially available, a photocopy must be submitted along with the application form. The copy will not be returned. - Your performance will be stopped when time is over, but it won t affect your evaluation. - You may choose an etude. Third Preliminary Round Choose and perform one piece out of the following with piano accompaniment. The official accompaniment will use the publisher written with parentheses below. 1) P. Taffanel Grande Fantaisie (BILLAUDOT) On themes MIGNON by Ambroise Thomas 2) A. Jolivet Chant de Linos (LEDUC) 3) P. Sancan Sonatine (DURAND) 4) H. Dutilleux Sonatine (LEDUC) Final Round Choose and perform one piece from the following (all movements) with piano accompaniment. Play an arbitrary cadenza. Participation Fee 30,000 Japanese Yen Application Period February 10 - March 10, 2018 (Application will be closed when the number of applicants reaches the quota.) Application Method A. Send the following materials 1) - 4) by mail to the Executive Committee (see the address below). 1) The application form 2) An international reply coupon and a self-addressed envelope (125mm x 235mm) 3) Two identical photographs (3cm x 4cm) above the breast, taken in or after January One of the two must be attached on the application form. The name of the applicant must be written on the back of the other. 4) A photocopy of an identification of the applicant s date of birth. (e.g. Student ID, Driver s License, Passport) B. Transfer the participation fee by the international postal money order to: (Please beware that any bank check is NOT ACCEPTABLE.) *Applications will be accepted when both A and B are completed. The participation fee is not refundable for any reason. However, if the fee is transferred after the number of applicants reaches the quota, the participation fee will be refunded (remittance fee will be subtracted). The announcement of the results of the final round will be given at the award ceremony. Accompaniment must be by the piano. Contestants must bring their own accompanists at their own expenses, or apply for the official accompanist. No payment is needed for the official accompanist. The Executive Committee will decide the time and date for practice with the official accompanist. Contestants must bear travel, accommodation and other expenses. On the day of each round, contestants can practice in the time and place designated by the Executive Committee. Any personal information written on the application forms will not be used for other purposes than the competition. Contestants who violate the regulations of the competition will be disqualified. Award winners in the general and junior sections will be given an opportunity to perform at the concert Young Musicians toward the World at the 32nd Kyoto Art Festival to be held in early October 2018.

Applicants may also apply for the General Section at the same time. 7 Application method for the First Preliminary A. Send the following materials 1) - 4) by mail to the Executive Committee (see the address below). 1) Recorded CD of the required piece of the first preliminary round. *Applicant s name must be written on it. 2) Application form 3) An international reply coupon and a self-addressed envelope (125mm x 235mm) 4) A photocopy of an identification of the applicant s date of birth. (e.g. Student ID, Driver s License, Passport) B. Transfer the first preliminary round participation fee (8,000 JPY) by the international postal money order to: (Please beware that any bank check is NOT ACCEPTABLE.) *Application will be accepted when both A and B are completed. The participation fee is not refundable for any reason. The CD for the first preliminary round must be made in the audio format (CD-DA format, playable with an ordinary audio CD player). The data format will not be accepted. The results of the first preliminary round and the application forms for the second preliminary and the final rounds will be mailed around the middle of March from the Executive Committee. The participation fee for the second preliminary and the final rounds must be transferred when applying for the second preliminary round. The announcement of the results of the second preliminary round will follow the judgment at the venue. The announcement of the results of the final round will be given at the award ceremony.
