2 Welcome Congratulations to our Sentimental Selfie Contest Winners! In celebration of our 125th anniversary, we decided to hold a sentimental selfie contest. The response was overwhelming, and we thank you for your heartfelt and moving entries! Here s a look at the two contest winners, and we encourage you to follow us on Facebook to see a few more of our favorites. Mary Moser I was sixteen years old bright-eyed and completely naïve when I enrolled in a conservatory as a piano performance major. I left two years later, a conservatory dropout wracked with self-doubt and chronic tendonitis. Performance was not, as I realized, my calling as a musician. But I thought back to my first job in high school as a pianist and organist at a small church in town and realized that church music might just be my calling. Church music was a safe haven for me a place to reconcile my deep, abiding love of playing with my desire to be satisfied with glorious, joyous imperfection as a musician. Fast forward 13 years, though, and I find myself as a full-blown music minister, a role that was new to me on so many levels. I find myself, too, with a beautiful old tracker organ that I have no idea what to do with and a congregation who, while being highly appreciative of my heartfelt piano playing, finds deep solace in the rumblings of their august instrument. What I learned quickly is that being a highly proficient piano player means, really, very little when it comes to transitioning to being even a minimally functional organist. (I still can t figure out how to pre-set the organ registration pedals on this thing. Seriously, there has to be a button or a switch or something, right?) It was this frustration that brought me to Lorenz. Having been a longtime subscriber to The Church Pianist, I thought, Surely there must be something that can help?? The point of all of this is to give background as to why I chose these two books of Christmas songs Carols for Organ by Mark Hayes and arranged by Douglas E. Wagner. Equipped with these two slim volumes, I approached the organ bench last holiday season feeling empowered and capable for the first time in my nearly two years as their music minister. No, I did not hit every note on the keys or on the pedals but for the first time, I was able to feel joy, not anxiety, in playing this majestic instrument. Advent and Christmas are a time of hope, and a time to celebrate finding the profound and the sacred where we least expect it in our lives. Last Christmas, these two books in hand, I found my feet at the organ bench, and I found hope, joy, and renewal in my ministry. Here s to many more years of glorious, joyous imperfection at the organ. Jill and Abbie Ailes The best violin/piano books in the whole wide world are those written by the mother/daughter team of Kristin Campbell and Ruth Coleman! We re so thankful for their music and so glad we made our first purchase of Praise with Stringed Instruments back in We are also a mother/daughter team playing violin/piano! I am Jill and play piano, and my daughter, Abbie, plays violin. We started our journey back when Abbie was just 5 years old... She is now in college, majoring in music education, and we still play together for church, weddings, events, etc. We have played songs from this book over and over actually, we have just about worn it out! It has been taped together numerous times and has a multitude of paper clips marking the pages of our favorites. So then in 2013, we had to buy Hallelujah, What a Savior! Again, we love it! Our favorite selection is Give Me Jesus, as it just touches the heart in such a special way. Abbie is at a Christian college and will be in a traveling choir this semester. Her professor has already asked her to play violin solos for the offertories when they are at the different churches. The only sad part is she won t have me to accompany her! But the professor s wife will play with her and she has already told Abbie that Give Me Jesus is her favorite song in the book! I am not surprised at all and even though I won t be playing, we will be able to go to several of the churches and enjoy listening that s always a blessing too! To make a long story longer, we are huge fans of the Campbell/Coleman mother/daughter team! We sure are glad that the Lord allowed us to cross paths with them through their awesome gift of music. 1. Johann Sebastian Bach Dear Friends, Often referred to as the father of church music, Johann Sebastian Bach created a canon of work that represents a musical synthesis of works by the very best composers before and during his time. A command of theology also informed his composition. His personal Bible, known as the famous Calov Bible, resides at the Concordia Seminary Library in St. Louis, Missouri.
