3 Festivals Festivals June in Ljubljana 8-21 Jun, Kongresni trg square The June in Ljubljana Festival is celebrating its 10 th anniversary and invites you to the city of Ljubljana, to the Kongresni trg square to enjoy the artistic creations of dance, theatre and music. Light entertainment by day, high culture by night - available in the heart of the city free of charge. Those taking place in the morning will be particularly intended for children, afternoons will be reserved for light dance and music performances, and evenings for top quality dance, theatre and music events. The city and the Ljubljanica River will be painted in the colours of the music by acoustic musicians and choirs; enthusiasts of rock and electronic musical genres are welcome to the parks, namely the Tivoli and Tabor Park; the acoustic music and choirs will be singing at the Kongresni and Prešernov trg square, the Stari and Mestni trg square and on the bridges of the Ljubljanica River. Each year, the Summer in Ljubljana Old Town festival adds to the vibrancy of city life in Ljubljana by presenting a programme of classical music concerts held in the picturesque surroundings of the historical city. Most of the concerts are free. The festival begins in June and is held until the end of August, when it traditionally concludes with a mini festival titled Nights in Ljubljana Old Town. 4 Festivals Festivals 59th Jazz Festival Ljubljana Jun, Cankarjev dom cultural and congress and various vanues Jazz Festival Ljubljana is one of the oldest jazz festivals in Europe. It started in 1960 when it was founded as a festival presenting classical jazz bands from former Yugoslavia. The Jazz Festival Ljubljana has kept pace with international developments in the genre. Today it provides a connoisseur s choice of music and offers an exciting insight into creativity in contemporary jazz. Each year, the Jazz Festival Ljubljana features some of the world s biggest names in jazz, attracting music lovers from home and abroad. The summer is going to be marked by renowned soloists and orchestras such as; the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Milan Philharmonic Orchestra of the Scala, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, sopranos Kristina Opolais and Diana Damrau, pianist Peter Bence, Boris Eifman s Academic State Ballet from St. Petersburg, tenor Marcelo Álvarez, Laibach and Voca People, and choreographer Edward Clug. The festival is closing with a concert by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from Amsterdam

5 Exhibitions Exhibitions Švicarija: Community, Art and Nature 8 Feb Jan 2019, Švicarija Creative Centre in Ljubljana The Švicarija: Community, Art and Nature project encompasses a multifaceted exhibition and a year-long programme of events linking the past with the new vision of the Švicarija Creative Centre. Drawing from the diverse history of the building, the meeting space of various models of coexistence and cooperation, as well as the specific environment of domesticated nature, the building of Švicarija is imbued by reflection on history, architecture and art. The exhibition was produced by International Centre of Graphic Arts in cooperation with the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, the City Museum of Ljubljana and the Arrea Architecture Bureau. Closed: Mondays Stanko Kristl, Architect: Humanity and Space 19 Dec May 2018, MAO -Museum of Architecture and Design Stanko Kristl is considered one of the most prominent Slovenian architects, a man whose work has provoked and inspired local and international publics alike, both during the process of their creation and up to the present day. As an architect in the broadest sense of the term, Stanko Kristl uses his projects and research work to pose, at every opportunity, the fundamental question of architecture: What is architecture in relation to human? People and their perception of space is a key theme in his work, one that has left a significant mark on architect Kristl s design research approach. Open: 10:00-18:00. Closed: Mondays Tomislav Gotovac - retrospective exhibition Apr 4 - Jun 10, City Art Gallery of Ljubljana The retrospective exhibition of Tomislav Gotovac, a renowned Croatian neoconceptualist who passed away seven years ago, presents an overview of his six-decade long art career. The demonstration of his practice through various art mediums and different creative phases is complemented by a comprehensive look into his extensive production. The exhibition presents both older and newer works, made by the artist during the last years of his life. It displays his well-known projects and interventions, videos, various documents (examples of judicial processes, therapist s visits, etc.), newspapers, collages, urban interventions, etc. A special emphasis is given to his interventions and performance art from the 1970s, and to his particularly piercing video production. Closed: Mondays David Lynch: Fire on Stage 13 Apr - 29 Jul, International Centre of Graphic Arts The first presentation of the American film director, scriptwriter, photographer, painter, musician and printmaker David Lynch in Slovenia. The Fire on Stage exhibition offers a selection of seventy fine art graphic prints produced in the lithography technique. The presentation is rounded off by paintings from private collections, watercolours, as well as a selection of experimental and animated films. What all the displayed works have in common is the intertwining of the surrealistic, expressive and grotesque, by which a Lynchian atmosphere is established. This is followed in the exhibition set-up with a stage-like feel conjured up by set designer Branko Hojnik. Tuesdays at 18:00 guided tours in English Open: 10:00-18:00. Closed: Mondays Lighting Guerrilla: Colours 11 May - 16 Jun, Galerija Vžigalica/Match Gallery In its current edition, the festival of light that celebrates its 12th anniversary, comprises numerous lighting installations, objects and projections presented in the streets and squares of Ljubljana, and in two gallery settings. At the Match Gallery we are presenting: Yoko Seyama, Aleksandra Stratimirović & Athanassios Danilof, Boštjan Čadež. Open: 12:00-23:30. Closed: Mondays Marc Riboud: Conscious Traveller. Concerned Photographer. 29 May - 14 Oct, Jakopič Gallery Marc Riboud ( ), a French photographer with a worldwide reputation, as part of the Magnum Photos agency, spent many years working as a photojournalist, while also building his own oeuvre of auteur photography, which developed mostly on his unbelievably numerous journeys around the world. Closed: Mondays Monument - Drago Tršar 15 Jun - 30 Sep, Museum of Modern Art Drago Tršar is unquestionably one of the main and most prolific representatives of modernism in Slovenia. In collaboration with six other public institutions, Museum of Modern Art has conceived a project in the form of a series of retrospective and themed survey exhibitions across Slovenia. The project, entitled Monument - Drago Tršar, includes monumental sculpture, public sculptures and monuments, small-scale sculpture, various series, e.g. erotic works and portraits, as well as works on Japanese paper, paintings, marine motifs and more - all the many threads that make up the artist s oeuvre. More than just a tribute to Drago Tršar, the project aims to present an unprecedented, comprehensive overview of the artist s oeuvre to date to as wide an audience as possible. Closed: Mondays Ivana Kobilca ( ) - paintings 21 Jun - 10 Feb 2019, National Gallery To mark its one hundredth anniversary, the National Gallery of Slovenia will present the life and work of Ivana Kobilca, one of the most well-known Slovenian artists of all times. Together with her friends and acquaintances like Rosa Pfäffinger, Maria Slavona and Käthe Kollwitz, she was one of the first female painters of the modern age that succeeded in a traditionally male field. Her first retrospective in forty years will present around 130 works of art from all periods and of different genres. Besides popular works, like Woman Drinking Coffee, Summer, Children in Grass and Mira Pintar, many lesser-known paintings will be presented; together, the pictures reflect Kobilca s creative power and the influences of European art s. 6 Music Music Venice Baroque Orchestra 2 Jun, 20:00, Cankarjev dom cultural and congress Committed to the rediscovery of 17th- and 18th-century masterpieces, the Venice Baroque Orchestra is recognized as one of the premier ensembles devoted to period instrument performance. Under the leadership of harpsichord player and explorer Andrea Marcon, the ensemble has been reviving the forgotten historical masterpieces and re-imagining well-known works. In the spirit of a true Baroque orchestra, the ensemble s line up is adapted in compliance with the requirements of the repertoire. The red thread is Vivaldi, his widely familiar compositions as well as those virtually unknown. The orchestra has been enthralling the audiences worldwide with their fresh energy, stylistic idiosyncrasy and clarity of sound. This year s festival will take place at a new location, the Ljubljana Castle, where a series of fresh musical projects will be presented. Three ensembles will appear on the first day of the festival: Šlajn, Buh and Nula Kelvina. On the second day of the festival, new projects will be presented by the bands Orkestrada, Počeni škafi and Yanu. The third and final day of the festival will feature a festival production entitled Butterflies are Going to the Sky, with songs by Rok Vilčnik performed by Maja Keuc, Aleksandra Ilijevska, Bilbi, Ana Mravlje, Noe Vilčnik and Brodolomca. 8 Miscellaneous Mini course of Slovenian language Miscellaneous Barjanka - cycling event 9 Jun, 8:00 Start: Kongresni trg square Barjanka, a new cycling event within the BTC City Franja Marathon, will present to cycling lovers the natural beauty of Ljubljana Marshes. It will also recall the beginnings of cycling competitions when they were still held on macadam roads. The route of Barjanka is leading the contestants through the Ljubljana Marshes (Ljubljansko barje) Nature Park. Inscribed under the UNESCO World Heritage List, Ljubljana Marshes is a unique natural area situated on the threshold of Ljubljana. This area of wetlands and peat bogs is known for its rare animal and vegetal species and for the remains of the prehistoric pile dwellings, where, among other important finds, archaeologists recovered the world s oldest wooden wheel, made more than 5,000 years ago. Performances will be held in the city streets as well as in theatres. Posavsko štehvanje 23 Jun, 16:00 Village of Savlje Štehvanje is an old Slovene folk game, a form of quintain. It is a traditional equestrian game that takes place every year during the summer in the village of Savlje, on the outskirts of Ljubljana. The competition involves unmarried boys who ride their horses, holding a metal bat in the hand and try to shatter a mounted wooden barrel. Those who inflict the final blow to the barrel is the winner. The contest is monitored by the commission, which declares the winner. The event is later continued with a feast and a gathering.
