2 Carter CV 2 TEACHING EXPERIENCE Professional Associate, College House Music Program (September present) University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA Description: Teach applied voice to undergraduate majors and non-majors. Beginning students focus primarily on vocal technique with vocalises and song study using repertoire from art song and traditional musical theater styles. More advanced students may continue with the styles listed above and expand into opera; or they may shift to learn contemporary commercial music vocal techniques, and move into contemporary musical theater, jazz, pop and rock styles. A semester-end recital is offered but not required where students perform both solo and ensemble repertoire. Classes are offered for either credit or audit. 1) A large majority of my students at Penn have been accepted into performing groups on campus such as Penn Singers, Penn Players, Mask & Wig, and the Penn Glee Club in which they have been assigned either lead or supporting roles. 2) Established a recurring semester-end joint recital with another program voice teacher that provides students with solo vocal performance opportunities they would not have otherwise on campus. 3) Staged and coached operatic and musical theater scenes for performance in recital; including scenes from Don Giovanni, La traviata, Street Scene, You re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Follies, and My Fair Lady. 4) Consulted with the Penn Music Department administration regarding the establishment an opera workshop supported directly by the university. Specifically, discussion surrounded workshop structure, curriculum, staffing, facility requirements and budget. 5) My studio is open to all levels of singer. Several students have come to me not able to match pitch. Those who have studied with me for longer than two semesters are now able to sing in tune both with accompaniment and a capella. One such student has subsequent to his study with me joined one of the a capella groups on campus. 6) Prepared a student for a successful audition for transfer admission to Berklee College of Music as a Professional Performance major. Adjunct Performing Arts Faculty (June present) Sanford School, Hockessin, DE Description: Teach applied voice to high school and junior high school students. Prepare advanced students for state and national vocal competitions, as well as auditions for undergraduate programs and school productions. Work with male treble voices in order to provide a basic understanding of vocal technique, and to guide them through their voice change. 1) An acceptance rate of 86% for students auditioning for Delaware State Honor Choir over the past three years of teaching at Sanford. 2) Students have been cast in lead and supporting roles in musicals both in school and at the local community level including the musicals Little Women, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Seussical, and The Sound of Music. 3) One student has been a cast as The Shepherd Boy in Opera Delaware s production of Tosca, as well as the treble soloist in a performance of Bernstein s Chichester Psalms at Church of the Good Samaritan in Paoli, PA.

3 Carter CV 3 Adjunct Faculty/Artist-in-Residence (June present) Temple University, Music Preparatory and Enrichment Program, Philadelphia, PA Description: Provide individualized voice instruction to singers with an array of ages and ability levels. Often my students at Temple are either working adults who are seeking artistic enrichment and help with local theatrical and choral auditions, or they are high school and college aged students preparing for entrance auditions to colleges and universities. Prepare students for an optional end-of-semester recital for the public where they perform one to three pieces. Teach a class to beginning voice students that combines elements of vocal music appreciation and basic vocal technique. 1) Created a curriculum for a beginning voice class that develops basic singing skills such as consistent breath support and resonance, critical listening skills leading to a set of criteria with which to evaluate to vocal music, and an understanding and appreciation for solo vocal music of many styles including opera, musical theater, jazz, rock, country, folk, pop, gospel and blues. 2) All individual students have performed in a semester-end recital singing at least one song from memory. Many students before coming to me had either never accomplished that task before. 3) Some individuals have gone on to perform regularly in the community. One adult student has been cast in a local opera company production. One high school student was selected as section leader for Pennsylvania District Honor Choir. Private Voice Teacher (2004-present) Austin, TX & Philadelphia, PA Description: Provide private vocal instruction to members of the community of all ages, voice types and skill levels. 1) Older amateur adult student was awarded solo opportunities with semi-professional choral society and church choir. 2) Aided graduate theater student in preparing for successful musical theater auditions for major New York based casting agents. 3) Worked with several rising pop and rock groups to improve vocal tone quality and intonation, as well as consult with the groups songwriters to improve vocal lines, harmonies and word choices. Voice Instructor ( ) Anderson High School, Austin, TX Description: Provided individualized voice instruction to members of the school choral program. Assisted students in preparing for state-wide (UIL) choral and solo voice competitions as well as music for school performances. Assisted advanced students in preparation for college program auditions. 1) Eight students received the highest possible mark in the UIL regional solo voice competition and were able to compete at the state finals. Two students received the highest possible mark at the state level. 2) Three students were accepted into college music programs including Stephen F. Austin University and Southwestern University.

4 Carter CV 4 Teaching Assistant ( ) The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX Description: Taught individualized applied voice to undergraduate music and non-music majors, and graduate non-music majors. Course subjects included: the techniques of classical singing, the art of song interpretation, working with collaborative artists, and critical listening skills. 1) All students prepared one piece to be performed for memory in front of their peers at the end of the semester, which was evaluated by the supervising professor. 2) One undergraduate student changed his major to voice performance, and subsequently earned his degree in music.
