VOCAL & CHORAL SYLLABUS NOTE: TEACHERS, PARENTS & PARTICIPANTS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY There are a few changes/additions to the VOCAL & CHORAL SYLLABUS, including a major rule change for Provincials qualification, and a venue change. Changes/items of note are highlighted. Please read the General Rules, Entry Rules, and Discipline Rules as they apply to your discipline and to the entire festival before completing the Entry Form. Incomplete entry forms will not be accepted. Please ensure correct contact information is included, including phone numbers and addresses. Late entry forms will not be accepted. No entry fee changes for the Festival. Admission to the Vocal & Choral Venues in 2017 is by donation. 6 2017 Q.F.P.A. FESTIVAL GENERAL RULES The following GENERAL RULES apply to all participants, parents, and teachers in all disciplines (Dance, Vocal, Piano and Speech Arts) and should be read and understood by all. See Adjudication Rules #8 for copyright information. PERFORMANCE RULES 1. Participants must report to the Check-In desk at the performance venue AT LEAST fifteen minutes prior to the scheduled class commencement time. 2. No admittance will be allowed once a performance has commenced. 3. Absolute silence must prevail during each performance. 4. After performing, Participants shall sit in the performance hall in readiness for the class adjudication. 5. No performer may practice on the performance stage or piano at any time during the Festival. 6. No photography, videotaping, or recording of any sort, digital or otherwise, is allowed within the theatre area of the venue during the performances. Those recording MAY cause their associated performer(s) to be disqualified. This is both a liability issue for QFPA (recording of minors) and a copyright concern. 7. As a courtesy, please notify the festival Committee of any withdrawals. FESTIVAL ETIQUETTE An official copy of festival etiquette will be available in the Festival Program and at each venue. Admission to Dance venue will be by set fee in Admission to all other discipline venues shall be by donation. Please give generously to support the performing arts in Quesnel. No admittance will be allowed during performances. Admission doors will be opened in between performances. No food and drink in performance venues. Absolute silence must prevail during each performance. Please respect the competitors by remaining in your seats until their number is completed. Please acknowledge every performance by polite applause. Please note: some performances may not be suitable for all ages. CELEBRATION OF STARS PERFORMANCE: 1. All competitors should be prepared to perform at the Celebration of Stars, an all-discipline event generally held in May, and will be informed as soon as possible after the conclusion of the Festival. 2. Teachers are responsible for notifying the performers and will do so after consultation with the Finale Chairperson. 3. The adjudicator will make the selection of performers to appear. 4. Provincial selections and awards will be announced and showcased at the performance. 5. Admission to the Celebration of Stars performance is by ticket only. There may be Reserved seating. Date & ticket price will be designated by the Festival committee. No refunds. 5

7 ADJUDICATION RULES 1. IN ALL CASES, THE ADJUDICATOR S DECISION IS FINAL. 2. With the exception of the Festival Committee, the Adjudicator s Secretary and/or any other person so designated by the Festival Committee, NO COMMUNICATION, verbal or otherwise, shall take place between the Adjudicator and competitors or other interested parties during the Festival. 3. Performers achieving the appropriate standard of age and ability MAY be chosen by the Adjudicator to attend the PERFORMING ARTS BC S PROVINCIAL FESTIVAL. Provincial Competitors, Alternates and Official Observers will be chosen on the basis of four criteria: CORRECT NUMBER/TYPE OF ENTRIES for their Discipline and Level (see Discipline-Specific Rules in the QFPA and PABC Syllabi) QUALIFYING MARKS - Two marks of 85% or better in the same Provincially-qualifying Discipline (ie. Speech Arts, Piano, Classical Voice, Musical Theatre, Ballet, Stage Dance, Modern Dance) are required to be eligible for consideration. RESIDENCY WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF S.D.#28. Participants from outside of School District #28 may only be given consideration to represent the Quesnel Festival as a Competitor, Alternate or Official Observer if there are no qualifying candidates in any given category from S.D.#28. The ADJUDICATOR'S RECOMMENDATION 4. In the event that no participant is considered by the Adjudicator to be suitable for recommendation as a Provincial Competitor, Alternate or Official Observer, despite the existence of qualifying marks, the placement shall be left empty. THE ADJUDICATOR'S DECISION IS FINAL. 5. A number of bursaries, awards and scholarships are made available each year to encourage and assist worthy entrants. To be eligible for any of these, the criteria of each section, is determined by its committee, must be met. All awards are chosen by the adjudicators. The Festival committee reserves the right to withhold any award in any year if, in the opinion of the adjudicator, a suitable standard has not been attained. 6. Quesnel Festival of Performing Arts is a mark less festival this year, except in the Dance Section. Marks will not be announced and will not be available until after the closure of each discipline. Marks will be given to teachers. Adjudication sheets for each class entered will be given out during festival. 7. Marks will be awarded as follows: Gold 87 and above Silver 82 to 86 Bronze 75 to 81 A mark of 82 or over is required to win a scholarship, award, and/or trophy. 8. THE USE OF PHOTOCOPIED MATERIAL BY PERFORMERS OR ACCOMPANISTS IS PROHIBITED. The entrant must provide the adjudicator with an ORIGINAL copy of the material. If ORIGINAL scores are not available, a letter is required from the publisher. There will be no exceptions. 9. WRITTEN COMPLAINTS ONLY will be accepted within 72 hours of the last day of each section s Festival, if accompanied by a $25.00 fee which will be returned in the event the complaint is upheld. Complaints should be submitted to the Festival Coordinator(s) whose name(s) shall appear in the Official Festival Program. 10. If a competitor qualifies for Provincial competition, the teacher is responsible for providing the necessary provincial information needed to complete the provincial entry. If the entry is not completed by QFPA s provincial entry deadline, the competitor will forfeit their placement and will not attend the Provincial competition. There will be no exceptions. 6

8 MANAGEMENT, LIABILITIES, WAIVER Participants shall be under the management of the Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts. Any questions not dealt within these rules should be referred to the President(s) of the Festival committee. The decisions of the Committee shall be final and binding on all concerned. The Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts, Executive and Directors will not be held responsible for any errors or omissions or any injury sustained during the Festival. By entering the Festival, you give up your right to claim compensation for any injury or loss of property. For Festival participation, you, your heirs, executors, administrators and anyone else who may claim on behalf of yourself, covenant not to sue and covenant to waive, release, discharge and indemnify Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts, its directors, officers or anyone else involved with the above organization from and against any and all claims or liability for personal injury, verbal or physical harassment, or loss of any kind whatsoever. 7

10 Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts 2017 VOCAL SECTION The vocal section is conducted in a workshop format. Please read General Festival Rules, all of which apply here. 1. A separate entry form is required for each participant, not for each entry. 2. Participants must provide the Adjudicator with an original score of each selection. 3. Participants should be in the hall not less than 15 minutes before their class. 4. No food or beverages permitted in the Church Sanctuary of the venue. 5. No photocopies permitted. Original music must be handed to the secretary at check in. Taped music WILL NOT be permitted as accompaniment. Sheet music downloaded from the internet must be accompanied by a receipt (separate receipt for each copy) and the music must be presented to the secretary for approval at least 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the class. 6. Participants should be prepared to perform at the Finale concert if requested. 7. Each participant must be a member of the Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts. 8. Fees must be paid at time of registration. 9. The use of live flame is strictly forbidden. TEACHER S NOTES 1. Lieder Class: Voice and piano will both receive adjudication. Class entered must be submitted in the highest age level of performers. 2. In Musical Theatre, costumes and props are encouraged but not compulsory. This class can be solo or ensemble. 3. Recommendation to the Provincial Music Festival is based on the following: Classical Voice - performance of 3 contrasting pieces in accordance with the current Provincial Syllabus (Vocal Section and General Rules). Please mark these clearly on the entry form; they will be performed as a Concert Group. One piece by a Canadian Composer must be included. No Musical Theatre or Folk permitted. Entry into the Vocal Variety Class at Provincials is also permitted. Please review Provincial Syllabus rules in regard to repertoire. Musical Theatre - solo performance of 2 contrasting pieces in accordance with the current Provincial Syllabus (Vocal Section and General Rules). Please, no use of water or open flame. The piece should be introduced (Musical, character). Entry into the Vocal Variety Class at Provincials is also permitted. Please review Provincial Syllabus rules in regard to repertoire. National Musical Theatre (Provincial Class # 9) - Note: This class must be upon recommendation from the local Festival Adjudicator, and must represent performances of outstanding high levels. Age: 28 years and under. Time Limit: 40 Min. The selection(s) on which the competitor was recommended by the adjudicator at the local level must be performed at the Provincial level. 1. One Ballad. 2. One Up-tempo, often comedy. 3.One own choice, from the Musical Theatre Standard Repertoire. 4. All copyrights regarding music and printed text must be observed. Competitors attempting to use unauthorized copies of copyrighted material will be disqualified. Please refer to Provincial General Rules. 9
