1 2017 Cyprus Jazz Workshop The 2017 Cyprus International Jazz Workshop was held at European University Cyprus in Nicosia, Cyprus from 8 13 July. Over 60 participants attended this year s workshop, coming from Nicosia (Greek and Turkish Cypriots), Limassol, and Larnaca. Also there was much interest from outside of Cyprus including students who were from Austria, Spain and Greece. After registration, students auditioned for placement in Jazz Combos, Jazz Big Bands, Jazz Improvisation, and Master Classes. Based on the results of their audition, students were placed in jazz courses of similar-ability levels. George Krasidis saxophone master class focused on the basic fundamentals of music in order for the students to become better musicians.

2 Optional Master Classes were available for all students who attended. Below, Paolo Orlandi is teaching a Latin percussion class to help students understand the differences in Brazilian and Afro-Cuban styles. Basic fundamentals means students are leaning, but not limited to, technique, tone production, how to practice, and other important aspects of becoming a good musician. Below the piano students are learning piano voicings from jazz artist/educator Mario Toumbas.

In Jazz Improvisation classes students learned the basic fundamentals of jazz improvisation including scales, chords, chord progressions, and melody creation.

3 In Jazz Improvisation classes students learned the basic fundamentals of jazz improvisation including scales, chords, chord progressions, and melody creation. Keeping the class sizes small allowed for a maximum of learning in a short period of time. Rob Thomas, Head of the Jazz Strings Department at Berklee College of Music, shares his expertise with the students. In Jazz Combos, the students worked on selected standard jazz repertoire based on their ability levels. The focus of the jazz combos is on jazz improvisation, which means creating a new melody. What students learned in Jazz Improvisation courses they applied right away in the Combos classes.

In rehearsals, the focus was on, but not limited to, intonation, phrasing, articulation, musicianship, and working together as a team.

4 The Jazz Big Bands focused on playing the music of the Jazz Masters such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman and many more. In these classes, students learned to sightread music and to work for a common goal. In rehearsals, the focus was on, but not limited to, intonation, phrasing, articulation, musicianship, and working together as a team. At the conclusion of each day, the Jazz Faculty presented jazz recitals so students could see and hear faculty members and how they interacted with the other musicians in the group. In addition, students learned much about audience etiquette and the importance of listening and supporting the performers.

Students who attended the week-long Workshop were awarded Certificates of Completion in the Jazz Musicianship Program.

5 On the last day of the 2017 Cyprus Jazz Workshop, teachers and students met at the European University Cyprus s Cultural Center for the Ceremony Awards. Students who attended the week-long Workshop were awarded Certificates of Completion in the Jazz Musicianship Program. The audience this year was one of the most enthusiastic and appreciative audiences we ve had at EUC. The Jazz Big Bands, Jazz Combos, Jazz String Ensembles and the Vocal jazz Ensembles presented an outstanding concert. A very exciting evening for everyone!

This year vocalists had three outstanding vocal coaches, Ioanna Troullidou, one of Cyprus outstanding vocalists and musicians; piano accompanist/vocal coach Denny Euprasert, from Rangsit University, Bangkok, Thailand; and vocal jazz director, Mike Danna, from Fresno City College in Fresno, California USA.

The final jazz ensemble performance was a big band, directed by Dr. Gene Aitken. Congratulations to all the students and faculty for a great jazz week.

And, many thanks to European University Cyprus for hosting this incredible educational event, a very important cultural event for the entire country of Cyprus! Cyprus Jazz Workshop had two additional major events this year in addition to the 2017 Cyprus Jazz Workshop. First, Jazz Education Abroad Jazz Faculty presented a concert of American Jazz music at the Spanish Ambassador s residence for other Cypriot artists, politicians and diplomats from the Embassies in Cyprus. The two-hour American Jazz concert was well received by all of the attendees.

8 The second event, with the support of the European Union, took the 2017 Cyprus Jazz Workshop faculty to Turkish Cypriots where they presented Outreach Master Classes at the Ledra Music and Arts Studio. Mr. Mike Dana presenting a Guitar Master Class. One of Jazz Education Abroad main goals is to help unify Greek and Turkish Cypriots by using American Jazz music performance and American Jazz music education as the vehicle for communication. Jeremy Siskind presents a Piano Master Class.

9 After the Master Classes, the faculty and students traveled to Hasder Garden to present the Jazz Education Abroad Faculty Concert and Jam Session. An enthusiastic 10 pm audience.
