The following suggestions will help you care for your ffumpet: Place case on the floor so that the lid will open upward. Undo latches and lift lid up. Take hold of the instrument by grabbing the valves. Close the case lid, latch it, and place case under your chair. When finished, get case from under chair, open the lid, take out cleaning cloth and clean your trumpet. Open the watei' key and blow the water out of your trumpet. Place trumpet back into the case the same way you found it. Place cleaning cloth on top of your trumpet. Close lid and latch case. lnstrument must be secure inside case and must not move inside case. Never play in the rain or allow water on your trumpet. Water will corrode brass. Keep your instrument looking new by cleaning it often. Do not leave your trumpet in the car. Hot temperatures will damage pipe connections and solder points. filever set your trumpet ciswn and ieave it aione. Always take your trumpet with you wherever you go. Never let anyone borrow your instrument. lt may come back broken or you not get it back. trtr. Maintaining the Trunr.pet You will need the following items to keep your trumpet well maintained: take out valves and apply valve oil apply directly every time you practice or play VASELINE or SLIDE GREASE * to keep your slides from sticking CLEANING CLOTH - to keep dust, grease, and oil off your trumpet ELECTRONIC TUNER - to tune your notes before you practice and/or olay FOLDING MUSIC STAND - Have one at home or when needed while performing. CUP MUTE and STRAIGHT MUTE * for sound color effects and softer volume playing VALVE OIL - III. Parts of the Trumpet It is very important to learn all parts of the trumpet. The parts of the trumpet are listed below: 1. Mouthpiece - attached to lead pipe where your lips buzz to produce tone 2. Lead pipe - straight pipe at the top of the instrument where mouthpiece is attached 3. Water keys - used to drain trumpet of water. One is on the lead pipe and the other on the 4. valve Tuning slide - 3'd at the end of the lead pipe. Pull out if trumpet is sharp and push in if trumpet is flat 5, 1't valve slide - found with the l't valve or button 6. 2nd valve slide- found with the 2nd valve or button 7. 3'd valve slide- found with the 3'd valve or button

5 XIX. Half Steps and Whole Steps on the Piano A half step is the distance between a white key to a black key or black key to a white key. Examples include C- C#, D-D#, F-F#, G-G#, A-A#, D-Db, Ab-Gb, Bb-Ab. A whole step is the distance between any two white keys or any two black keys: Examples include C-D, D-E, F- G, G-A, A-8, C#-D#, F#-G#, G#-A#. The exceptions are B-C and E-F: these are half steps. XX. Sharp, Flat and Natural Symbols A sharp is a symbol written in front of a pitch/note indicating the pitch/note to be raised a half step. n^rrb A flat is a symbol written in front of a pitch/note indicating the pitch/note to be lowered a half step. h Natural: I A natural is a symbol written in front of a pitch/note indicating that pitch/note witt no longer be raised or lowered a half step. A natural cancels a sharp or a flat. XXI. Key Signatures and Maior Scales Key signatures are groups of sharps or flats found at the beginning of the staff next to the treble clef. The key signature shows what scale you will be playing. A scale is a group of 8 pitches that go up and down. The scale can be played using letter names or sung using solfege syllables (do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do'). Below are the most common key signatures and scales used in playing the guitar: Key of CMaiorl C Major Scale uses no sharps or no flats 15

6 XXV. Tempo, Dynamics, and Articulations Tempo is the speed of the music. lt can be fast, medium or slow. Tempo is indicated by a metronome narking, such as m. m. = tzo (120 beats per minute), or by the following ltalian terms: Slow Tempi: (m. m. = 20-40) (m. m. = 40-45) Lento - slowly (m. m. = 45-50) Largo - broadly Larghetto - rather broadly (m. m. = 50-55) (m. m. = 55-65) Adogio - slow and stately (m. m. = 65-69) Adagietto - rather slow Andonte moderoto - slower (m. m. = Grave slow and solemn Medium Tempi: Andante - at a walking pace {m. m. = Andantino - faster andante (m. m. = Marcio moderato - march-like (m. m. = 83-85) (m. m. = 86-97) Moderato - moderately FastTempi: Allegretto - moderately fast (m. m. = ) Allegro - fast, quickly & bright (m. m. = ) (m. m. = Vivace - lively and fast Vivocissimo - very fast & lively (m. m. = ) Allegrissimo-veryfast (m.m. = ) (m. m. = Presto - extremely fast Prestissimo - faster Presto (m. m. = 178 & over) Vorioble Tempi: Accelerando - accel. - gradually getting faster Deccelerando - deccel. - gradually getting slower Ritardondo - rit. - gradually getting slower Dynamics are the louds and softs in music. The following ltalian terms designate the dynamics in music: Fortissimo - ff - plav/sing very loud I Sforzando - play/sing suddenly loud Forte - f - playlsing I Cresendo - gradually getting louder play/sing Mezzo forte - mf medium loud I Deuesendo - gradually getting softer Mezzo piano - mp - play/sing medium soft Piano - p - play /sing soft Pianissimo - pp - play/sing very soft loud Articulations are marks used to play or sing pitches/notes long or short. Marcato - Accent - (>) - play/sing note with a force or push (.) - play/singnoteshort Largato (-) - play/sing note long Staccato 20
