4 Welcome from tonight s conductor One of my most abiding memories was an occasion when I observed actors reading through a play. No doubt a finished production has its appeal but for me witnessing the actors first confrontation with a work has been extremely exciting. Since then I have been inviting people to orchestral rehearsals and many of these music-lovers said the same thing: that a first rehearsal, when an orchestra is less concerned with refined details but is experiencing the whole piece with a certain freshness, gives them a very special insight to the music. It is a backstage experience that may appeal to those who are interested in the process that leads to the final result. So we invite you to a read-through of pieces from the Budapest Festival Orchestra s extensive repertoire many of which we will not have performed recently. We may not achieve perfection we may even need to start all over again if things fall apart. But the plus-side is that you can choose what you want to hear. All of you will have the list of 285 choices: you make your pick, our (nervous) librarian will rush out from the stage, bring back and distribute the parts and we will begin to play. Have fun! 5 The Budapest Festival Orchestra: giftwrapping concerts Iván Fischer has introduced a number of innovative concert forms in his 28-year partnership with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, which he founded in His cocoa concerts for 5- to 10-year-olds have become legendary and have been attracting capacity audiences for over 15 years. Parents or grandparents bring their children, Iván talks to the kids, who listen to short chamber music works performed by BFO members. At the end they all have a cup of cocoa together. The surprise concerts have created a special trust between Iván and his followers in Hungary. Thousands of people buy concert tickets without an announced programme. Iván has often referred to the fact that people like beautifully packed gifts and surprises. These concerts allow him to choose unusual combinations of old and new works and he doesn t need to worry about the box office. His open-air concerts, given once a year in Budapest, often address social issues: in one concert Iván illustrated the influence of Gypsy music on composers such as Brahms and Liszt an important gesture to Hungary s most suppressed minority; and during the Balkan War he invited choirs from Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia to sing Beethoven s Ninth Symphony together in front of a crowd of 50,000 listeners. There have been other innovations: a marathon day with 11 concerts dedicated to one composer; a festival featuring the music of Gustav Mahler together with new commissions; a nationwide talent search leading to the BFO appearing with child prodigies; a competition among orchestral members, resulting in rank-and-file players appearing as the BFO s soloists. 19 Iván Fischer conductor Budapest Festival Orchestra Iván Fischer studied in Budapest, and in Hans Swarowsky s conducting class in Vienna. He has held positions as Music Director of Kent Opera and Opéra National de Lyon, and Principal Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington DC. This year he was named Principal Conductor of the Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin and Music Director of the Konzerthaus Berlin, engagements he commences in As founder and Music Director of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, he has introduced many innovative types of concerts, as well as popular open-air concerts in Budapest, and the staging of opera performances. He has also founded several festivals, including a summer Baroque Festival in Budapest and the city s Mahlerfest, which is also a forum for commissioning and presenting new works. As a guest conductor he works with the world s leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and leading US orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra, and each year conducts two weeks of programmes with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Recent highlights with the Budapest Festival Orchestra include Don Giovanni in New York, which they also perform together next season in Gran Canaria. Other forthcoming performances include collaborations in the USA with András Schiff, and with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in Salzburg. Iván Fischer has won many international prizes for his recordings. He has also received awards including Hungary s Golden Medal Award, the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum, France s Chevalier dans l Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a Royal Philharmonic Award and, in 2006, Hungary s prestigious Kossuth Prize. 17

20 Budapest Festival Orchestra The Budapest Festival Orchestra was formed in 1983 by Zoltán Kocsis and Iván Fischer, with musicians drawn from the best of Hungary s younger players. Since its foundation Iván Fischer has been Music Director and until his death, Georg Solti was Honorary Guest Conductor. The orchestra s initial series of three or four concerts a year was extended to a full season in 1992 and today the BFO is not only a vital part of Budapest s musical life, but a frequent guest at the world s major concert halls and festivals, and collaborates with many internationally renowned performers and conductors. The orchestra is also committed to the performance of contemporary music and regularly commissions new works. Among the orchestra s significant past projects have been its acclaimed opera productions; a cycle of works marking the 50th anniversary of Bartók s death; a cycle of Mahler symphonies; a series of performances for the centenary of Brahms s death; a Bartók-Stravinsky cycle; and a Liszt-Wagner cycle. In 2005 the orchestra launched its annual Budapest Mahlerfest and in 2008 an annual Marathon featuring a different composer each year. Among the orchestra s forthcoming highlights are performances in the USA, China and Europe. The Budapest Festival Orchestra s discography includes award-winning recordings of Bartók s The Miraculous Mandarin, Liszt s A Faust Symphony, Bartók s Concerto for Orchestra, and Mahler s symphonies Nos. 2, 4 and 6.
