3 KIT KEYBOARDING AND INPUT TECHNOLOGIES Why Join Orchestra in Middle School? So you ve played a string instrument for a couple of years now why should you continue on to middle school orchestra? 1. It s fun! In middle school you get to have orchestra every day of the week for 50 minutes. Because of this, you will progress much more quickly and we can play more challenging and exciting music. You already know the basics now we get to really dig in! There are many opportunities in middle school that were not available to you in 5 th grade. These include: Practice Club, Solo & Ensemble, Large Group Festival in 7th and 8th grade, Six Flags Music in the Park, Field trips to STL Symphony, and the opportunity to continue in High School where you will get to go on big trips and much, much more! 2. The people Orchestra students are AWESOME! The people that you have orchestra with in 6 th grade are people that you will be in orchestra with all throughout middle and high school. The friendships that you form with a music ensemble are strong you ll always have a place where you feel you belong. 3. Develop Life Skills Not only will we continue to refine the technique that you learned in elementary school, but you will also develop skills that carry over into your everyday life. Playing a musical instrument helps with your organization, problem solving skills, recall and retention, and even helps you to read better! Employers LOVE hiring musicians. They know that they have a good work ethic, will work well with others, and have creative ideas. 4. Scholarships It might seem a little early to be thinking about college, but playing a string instrument is a great way to get a scholarship to college. Many orchestras are looking for more students to play in their groups, so whether you decide to major in music or not, usually you can get at least a little money to play in their orchestras. If you do decide to pursue a career in music, many schools offer much larger scholarships. In order to get to the point that you earn these scholarships you need to start now!
4 6th Grade PLTW - Gateway to Technology What is Engineering? How are everyday products invented and developed? This is a project based class, which means not a lot of homework and time in class will be a mix of individual, partners, and small groups work time. There will be plenty of opportunity for creativity, but this course is considered an introductory STEM course. STEM means Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Each of the projects we complete will be focused on expanding our understanding of different STEM concepts (i.e. potential and kinetic energy, measurement skills, etc.) Competition, activities, and student presentations are all part of this Encore class. THEATRE & SPEECH Theatre offers a tremendous variety of opportunities. Through games, discussions, activities and performance, students break down barriers to others learn about themselves. Whether creative, inquisitive, logical or impassioned, everyone is valued in theatre.: o THEATRE ORIGINS: a rich exploration of people places and ideas centuries old. o EXPLORING PLAYS: puts great literature and vocabulary on its feet. o ACTING: an opportunity to walk a mile another person s shoes. Which develops poise, confidence, speaking skills, non-verbal communication, techniques to overcome stage fright, and much more! o TECHNICAL THEATRE: a little something for everyone; directing, video production, costume design, props, lighting, sound design, fight choreography, set construction you name it, we do it! everyone can find a home in the theatre Don t forget they re called plays for a reason THEATRE. IS. FUN.
5 Are you Interested in Learning a Different Language?!? Rockwood South Middle School offers THREE introductory language courses for students in 6 th grade. French, German and Spanish are all available as quarter- long classes. Students can take one or more languages to get an idea of their preference before potentially moving on to a language class in 7 th grade. Introductory language courses will give students some background knowledge so they can feel more confident in future language classes (which are taken for high school credit). Students will learn vocabulary and conversational skills by singing songs, practicing conversations, and playing games in the target language. They may also learn about the cultures and backgrounds of people who speak that language throughout the world. So join us to giggle in German, tell secrets in Spanish, and be fancy in French!
