1 Musician when willow is not busy teaching the world about inclusion, she loves to dance and listen to music. she especially likes ballet and classical music. willow knows that music can bring people together and create good feelings. music can really make you feel good. you can learn to play an instrument, sing, dance or just listen. there are many different ways to enjoy music. let s have some music fun! willow has the superpower of inclusion. she treats everyone the same. willow makes sure no one is left out and she knows how to encourage people to join in. willow is a sister to every girl scout. if you like music, here are some careers to think about: musician or singer music teacher sound engineer talent scout concert promoter music journalist 1

2 STEP1 write the number in the box next to each picture that matches the descriptions on page 3. choose three instruments and listen to music made with it. 2

3 1. accordion a portable instrument invented in germany. often used in folk music including the polka, the tango and cajun zydeco. 2. Djembe a drum from West Africa, it is an integral part of ritualistic life in Mali, Guinea, Senegal and other West African countries. 3. Electric guitar invented in the united states so guitar melodies could be heard when playing with other instruments. often used in bands. 4. french horn Invented in germany, the french horn is usually part of an orchestra or band. also once used for hunting. 5. guitar probably invented 3 or 4 thousand years ago possibly by the Egyptians. modern guitars are often used by singer/songwriters. 6. maracas Invented in Puerto rico and first made of hollow fruit with pebbles inside. often used in latin american music. 7. piano invented in italy, the piano replaced the harpsichord because of its superior sound. used all over the world in all types of music. 8. recorder This ancient instrument was invented thousands of years ago. today, it is most often used in grade schools as a beginner instrument. 9. saxophone Adolphe Sax is credited for the invention of the saxophone in BELGIUM in It is often played in jazz ensembles. 10. drum set around 1930, jazz musicians starting combining more than one percussion instrument into a set. often used in rock & jazz bands today. 11. tambourine ancient Egyptians are known to have used tambourines and they are still used in folk music and orchestras 12. trumpet It is believed that the trumpet was used as a signaling device in Ancient Egypt, Greece and the Near East. it is now an orchestral and band instrument. 13. violin It is believed that the violin originated from Italy in the early 1500s. today it is played in orchestras and folk music. 14. xylophone possibly originated in Southeast Asia or Oceania, the xylophone is often played with a marching band or in an orchestra. 15. zither The zither evolved as a folk instrument in Bavaria and Austria and forms of the modern zither are used in folk music around the world. 3

5 my family has a friend named Rachel. STEP3 she s a professional musician. she also plays violin and piano. let s ask Rachel some questions we go to see her sing and play guitar....about her career in music. did you go to college for music? I did! I always wanted to be a music teacher when I was younger. I worked at a school until I had my kids. now I work from home giving guitar and violin lessons. why music? I ve always felt a special connection with music I don t remember wanting to do anything else. even went through a rock star phase. what would you ask rachel? what is your favorite kind of music? that s hard depends upon my mood. I guess its folk and classical music but I like all kinds. why do you like your job? that s an easy one! when I'm singing, playing or teaching it doesn t feel like work at all. I would do it even IF I didn t get paid... actually, sometimes I don t! what do you mean you don t get paid? sometimes I perform for free in the hopes that it will get me more gigs. also, I have a couple of students who can t afford to pay for lessons. I believe in giving back and also spreading my love for music to everyone. 5

6 STEP4 let s try making music ourselves. here is my idea for maracas. you ll need: Ÿ plastic eggs Ÿ filler for eggs Ÿ plastic spoons Ÿ masking tape Ÿ markers try different fillers... you can also try writing song lyrics!...to make different sounds. place a tablespoon of beads, beans, pebbles or buttons inside of two eggs. tape two spoons onto each egg as shown. decorate the tape with markers. types of instruments percussion: an instrument played by being hit with something. brass: a metal instrument played by blowing air into a mouthpiece. string: an instrument played by plucking or using a bow on the strings. woodwind: a tube shaped instrument played by blowing air into it. let s make some music! and join in with your maracas. choose a favorite song... if you brought your own instrument...play a song for your and troop explain how your instrument works. STEP5 go ahead and dance and sing along also. 6
