1 2018 IBSA SUMMER WORSHIP UNIVERSITY CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AND AUDITION LOGISTICS Classes Marked with an Asterisk* Require an Audition on the First Day of SWU between 9-12 a.m. WORSHIP LEADERS WORSHIP LEADERS WORKSHOP* - In this period, students will be diving deeper into the practical aspects of worship leading, both musically and spiritually. They will learn how to study and select scriptural worship songs as well as how to create and lead worship sets that are not only musically excellent but are also focused on communicating the gospel message through song. They ll also learn how to bring their best contribution to the songs they lead, how to blend and follow the worship leader, as well as how to serve and invite a congregation into Christ-centered worship through humbly and confidently stewarding and sharing their gifts in musical worship. Class size is limited to 12 including both vocalists and praise-band instrumentalists. Interviews will be held on the stage. Period 4 & 7 Justin Falloon & Brent Snyder VOCAL ALL STATE CHOIR- Comprised of youth that are in the All-State Youth Choir. Auditions for next year s choir will be offered some time the week of SWU. The choir will be going on musical mission tour to Canada following SWU. Period 2 & 6 Director - Slater Murphy & Accompanist - Zane Lynn UNIVERSITY CHOIR- Comprised of all youth present at SWU that are not in the All- State Youth Choir. The choir will sing during the concert. Period 2 & 6 Director - Erin Falloon & Accompanist - Doug Phillips VOCAL TECHNIQUES 1 This class is for the beginning vocalist who wishes to sing better. Please bring a song you would like to sing. Period 5 Larry Rhodes & Doug Phillips VOCAL TECHNIQUES 2* - For the more advanced singer. This class will be offer advanced vocal instruction. Have several songs prepared. By audition. Auditions will be in 020. Period 4 Larry Rhodes & Sarah Lee INSTRUMENTAL UNIVERSITY BAND Student instrumentalists on a middle school or high school level will enjoy two periods a day playing great music together. This vibrant ensemble of musicians is open to all woodwind, brass and percussionists. String instruments like violin, viola, cello and bass are welcome to play in wind ensemble, but you must contact us in advance, so we can have music transposed for you. Band is open to all students and adults who play a band or orchestral instrument. No audition required. Bring your own instrument. Period 3 & 5 both Carmen Lynn & Christin Braswell assisting Robin Stolze & Kaitlynn Brown BRASS BRASS CHOIR - Small group brass ensemble. Brass players should be able to play on a High School level or above. Period 4 John Francis

2 GUITAR BEGINNING GUITAR - This class is for beginning guitarists. It will focus on learning basic chords and strumming techniques. By the end of the week, students should be able to play basic praise and worship choruses. You must provide your own guitar, but we have several you may borrow for class. Period 3 or 5 JC Vaca Diez & Catherine Kelso INTERMEDIATE GUITAR - This class is for guitarists who know the basics and want more. You must provide your own guitar. Period 7 Cody Pierce & Catherine Kelso ADVANCED GUITAR* - Advanced Guitar will move you past the cowboy chords and teach you moveable chords, power chords, alternate tunings, and to how to play basic lead riffs. Cody will also teach you about pedal boards, what amps and pedals for different styles of music and, which guitar will make that sound you hear and how technology can help you keep volume levels tolerable for current worship settings. Auditions will be in room 108. Period 4 Cody Pierce BEGINNING BASS GUITAR - This class emphasizes the FUNdamentals of beginning Bass Guitar with an emphasis on Playing Position, Fret Names/Note Locations, and Chord Charts. There will be as much individual instruction as possible. The goal is to prepare new players with the skills and understanding to play in their Youth or Church Praise Bands. Bring your own bass or borrow one of ours. Period 3 Jonathan Hayashi KEYBOARDS BEGINNING PIANO - For students with no prior piano experience. In a class setting, we will learn note names (including sharps and flags) on the grand staff and find those notes on the piano. We will also learn how to execute basic rhythms on the piano. In the end, students will understand how to coordinate both pitch and rhythm on the piano! Period 5 Sarah Lee INTERMEDIATE AND PIANO MASTER CLASS*- For experienced pianists by audition. Each student will come into class with a prepared piece to play for the group. You will receive feedback for encouragement and improvement form the teacher. Auditions will be in 030. Period 7 Doug Phillips PERCUSSION BEAT IT This class is the introduction to drum set. No experience necessary. By the end of the week you will be able to play basic rhythm patterns on the drum set. Period 4 Tony Munoz & Robin Stolze AUX PERCUSSION Students will learn to play auxiliary percussion instruments including cajon, djimbe, bongos, congas, etc. No prior experience is needed Period 7 Robin Stolze & Kaitlynn Brown

3 PERFORMING ARTS DRAMA ACTING THAT DOESN T SUCK - For students interested in drama but with little experience. Period 4 or 7 Jeremie Davis EVEN BETTER ACTING* - This class is designed for students with some acting experience. The class often performs for the large group during the week. If you took Drama in past SWUs consider taking this advanced drama. Auditions will be in the Choir room. Period 3 Jeremie Davis MOVEMENT INTERPRETIVE MOVEMENT -The participants will learn basic interpretive movement skills and use the skills to train other students in their home church. Basic use of props will also be taught and incorporated. Period 4 Jenna Herbst and Isaiah Barnett MUSIC THEORY BEGINNING KEYBOARDING FROM A CHORD CHART - Students will learn what defines a chord and how to form them. They will learn how to add left hand Bass accompaniment to the right-hand chord. This will all be done reading music from a chord chart similar to what guitars use. Students must have a basic knowledge of the piano keyboard. Period 3 Sarah Lee ADVANCED KEYBOARDING FROM A CHORD CHART - Students will review chording techniques with both hands. Attention will be given to right hand in both rhythm and technique for various styles of songs. Left hand rhythm technique will be approached also. Improvisation and musical ornamentation will be examined. This is for students who are already proficient with the piano or keys. Period 4 Erin Falloon SONGWRITING Students will learn basic elements of Christian songwriting including lyrics, melody and chords to express themselves. Period 7 Brent Snyder SIGNING SIGNING SONGS FOR WORSHIP - Learn about American Sign Language and how to use it as a witnessing tool to reach those with hearing loss by learning the ASL interpretation to a choir song(s). Learn how to lead worship by visually worshipping and how to praise the Lord in ways that don t require the ability to hear or speak. Period 7 Faith and Isaiah Barnett TECHNOLOGY WORSHIP TECHNOLOGY This is a class that will help the student learn more about music and worship technology. Students will learn how to use in-ear monitors, click tracks, stims, multitrack, digital soundboards, ProPresenter, basic lighting. Period 5 John Hume & Cody Pierce

4 SOUND ADVICE - Beginning Sound System principles. Beginning and advanced concepts on using digital and analog sound boards, mixing sound, microphone usage, speakers and accessories to make good house sound. Period 4 Gabe Herbst & Fred Book SOUND TECH PRACTICUM Hands-on Sound System Experience. This class will practice and run the sound, lights, and projection for our evening worship experience. The prerequisite is taking the other sound class or previous experience in worship technology. Period 7 Gabe Herbst & Fred Book VIDEO SHOOTING AND EDITING - The focus of this class is basic camera shooting skills. The students will shoot footage of SWU for the final video at the end of the week and for a promotional video for recruiting students for SWU If you have access to a HD phone or video camera, please bring it to camp. Period 3 Justin Falloon & Tony Munoz VISUAL ARTS VISUAL ARTS - You can use your artistic talents to tell others about Jesus, and we'll explore ways to do just that. We will have two option this year. Period 4 come paint and/or collage your vision of how to live N Tune. Period 5 we will paint for worship, come learn some tips and try it out. All supplies are provided. We'll also discuss other areas of art which can be utilized to spread the Gospel. There is an additional fee of $10 for art supplies. Period 4 or 5 Libby Morecraft BIBLE APOLOGETICS In this class, we will analyze the biblically mandated task of Christian apologetics by critically evaluating the theological and methodological approaches. We will also discuss the marks of a Christian mind with the purpose of deepening our Christian thinking. Finally, we will exercise our Christian minds by exploring, theologically, several important issues and ideologies which shape contemporary culture. Period 1 Jonathan Hayashi WHAT DID JESUS SAY ABOUT THAT Using the quotes of Jesus to address today s issues. Period 1 Larry Rhoades MEN OF VALOR - Our culture is changing, and the biblical roles of men and women are being challenged like never before. In this class for guys (only) we will learn what the Bible says about manhood, and how to be Godly men. We have all heard that we should be men of God but often no one tells us what that looks like in a practical way. Join us as we explore how to live as men of God. Subjects covered: Spiritual disciplines of Godly Men: Bible reading, prayer, service, etc. God created men and women differently and that s a good thing! How do I hear and know what God wants me to do? How do I live to point others to Jesus? How does a Godly man work, play, and enjoy life? Period 7 JC Vaca Diez

5 SCRIPTURE PRESENTATION FOR WORSHIP: This class will teach the student the value of reciting, reading, and dramatically presenting Scripture passages from the Bible. Scripture, God s revelation to us through His Word, historically has been a major part of corporate worship. Students will have opportunities to dramatically present God s Word through memorization, dialogue, narration, responsive reading, tableau, juxtaposition, and other techniques to offer the Word to the people. The class will be limited to 6 so each student will have maximum opportunity to participate. Before class, each student will need to memorize a passage of his choice of about 75 words (4-8 verses). This class will present scripture in each session of SWU and on All State Tour. Period 1 Steve Hamrick THE WOMEN GOD USES This class is strictly for girls. We will be discussing the special ways God can use you. Period 7 Marsha Murphy THEOLOGY OF WORSHIP Learn how the Bible defines worship and examine patterns we see in the Old and New Testament. We will use this information to craft a practical philosophy of worship that is discipling in the twenty-first century church. Period 1 John Francis
