Patron: Rt Hon Sir Anand Satyanand GNZM. QSO. KStJ. Newsletter September 2016 Members - $15 Public - $20 Students - $5 Meow Event Venue, 9 Edward Street, Wellington Sunday 18 September :00pm to 7.00pm Dave Feehan and Friends 4.00pm 4.50pm Scots College Band

President s Message On Sunday 21st August the Club hosted gypsy jazz band Black Spider Stomp playing an exciting programme in the Django Rheinhardt style with Sam Thurston, James Quick and Adrian Jensen on guitars, Scott Maynard on upright bass and Oscar Laven on clarinet and soprano sax. The sound operator was Mike Ainsworth. The playing was tight, driving and dynamic, with excellent soloing and tossing of the lead effortlessly from one to the other, and some brilliant (and at times frenetic) clarinet and sax by Oscar. The sound system was great They played two sets, including originals by James or Sam (*). The first set started with Topsy, followed by Proud Thieves*, Gin, Blue Drag, Scratch*, Billet Doux, Valse des Niglos*, Chainsmoking Blues*, Petite Fleur (featuring Oscar on clarinet), Mabel, September Song, and Patrimonio. After the interval, the second set included Porto Cabello, Russian Lullaby, Oriental Shuffle, Bhageera Kiplingi*, Tiger Rag, Bric a Brac*, Sweet Sue, Matello Swing* and finished with Mixture*. Support entertainment was provided by the Rongotai College Jazz Group led by tutor Daryl Prowse on trumpet and alto sax, comprising Emil Visser on recorder, Ryder Smith on alto, Connor Waszak on tenor, Isaac Thomson-Gregg, Tom Cole and Nihal Patel on troms, Cameron Young on guitar, Thomas Moore on bass guitar, Leo Greer on piano, and Jason Giannoutsos on drums. Their repertoire included; Watermelon Man, Peter Gunn, Mercy, Cantaloupe Island, In the Mood, Te Quila. It was great to see the boys giving it their best shot. Our next gig is on 18 th September at Meow. We will host popular jazz vocalist David Feehan with a top-class backing line-up. The last time Dave performed at the Club it was described as an excellent variety performance with great singing and very good backing. Support band entertainment will be provided by the Scots College Jazz Group. This will be their second appearance at the Jazz Club. It will be great to see these young up-and-coming jazz musos gaining performance experience. Come early and give them plenty of encouragement. Club members are encouraged to come to the annual NZSM Combo Competition, to be held at the Victoria University on Thursday 15 th September. See details on page 6. The event will be enhanced by 2016 Sept Wgtn Jazz Club newsletter 2

attendance of as many of the Club members as possible. Please come and support it. Also, bookings will soon open for our Tribute Concert for jazz legend Colin Hemmingsen, who will be performing with a star-studded line-up at the James Cook Hotel on Sunday 16 th October. See details on Page 6. Book in early, as seating will be limited. It will be the highlight of a brilliant year of jazz and a tribute for one of our great jazz men. See y all on 15 th September at NZSM and 18 th September at Meow. Mike Bain, President. Sunday Sept 18. 5:00pm at Meow. Dave Feehan Two years ago David Feehan performed to a full house. Now he s back, This time with my own band who for the first time are all available. Last year David released his 4 th solo album Cuatro, (although having appeared on over 20 albums released in NZ) making the charts at #12, a testament to this singer/songwriter/vocal tutor who has performed all over NZ, and in places like Ronnie Scott s and the 100 Club in London, Camillo s in LA, The Tuscany Project in Italy, a Polish tour with the RFBB, Montreux Jazz Festival (twice) and in Havana with Buena Vista Social Club; along with many TV and stage shows including playing Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. This time he will emphasise his love of popular contemporary jazz and the correlation with pop/blues/soul and R&B. Harmonies have always been a big thing with the David Feehan Band and David will be featuring regular band vocalists Fiona Bee, Emma Davey and Jamie Musuva. Artists like Steely Dan, Patti Austin, Ivan Lins, Allen Toussaint, Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Fire, Brian Setzer and Joe Jackson, often seen as Pop and often discarded by jazz aficionados, (even though their roots were all in jazz); have had a real resurgence in the last few years (Earth Wind and Fire and Patti Austin headlined at the 50 th Tauranga Jazz Festival). David will be bringing some of their songs to the stage along with tributes from the more jazzy side of Maurice White, Carole King and David Bowie, plus some songs off the new album, whilst still playing a few of the standards we all love Sept Wgtn Jazz Club newsletter 3

Line-up:- Phil Hornblow: Keys: Phil has been with the David Feehan Band for some years and is a huge asset to the band with his strong playing. He teaches music at Whitireia Polytechnic Music Conservatorium and has his own studio, Vision Studios, producing and arranging music in a variety of genres from recording work with NZSO and classical choral ensembles to music production work for the TV series Karaoke High. Olivia Campion: Drums: Olivia, from Hawkes Bay studied piano, flute and drums before graduating from NZSM with Batchelor of Music (Hons) on drums. She is a strong, thinking drummer, able to play all styles from the softest jazz ballad to the strongest rock sounds, and always with an ear to the vocals. Andy Mauafua: Guitar: His skills in every facet of music are legendary as a session and tour guitarist with many top NZ performers, travelling all over the world from Philippines to Glastonbury in UK. He shines on stage with his solos but is just as much at home playing quiet songs on the acoustic as he is the electric guitar. A tutor at Whitireia Polytechnic Music Conservatorium Andy has also studied at the prestigious Berklee Music School in USA. He also has a wonderful duo, Scarlet with his partner, Amanda Hanna-Doull playing jazz and blues songs in a softer jazz idiom. Paul Mouncey: Bass: Paul began learning bass, guitar and drums whilst at Logan Park High School, Dunedin. He studied Double Bass at Massey University, Wellington, graduating in 2002 with a BMus (Perf). Paul was with the top band Odessa and is a regular performer, both with the David Feehan Band and many other top local bands. Paul is equally at home playing rock, funk, Latin or jazz, and on either double or electric bass. Andre Paris: Saxophone: Originally from Auckland, Andre has been involved with music since picking up the alto saxophone at age 9. He was a member of the Aotea Youth Symphony and Queen City Big Band, performed with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra as well as winning Most Outstanding Saxophonist at the annual Tauranga Jazz Festival. Completing a BMus from Massey University in Wellington, he has been involved as a saxophonist and teacher, playing in small group jazz, big bands, dance/wedding bands, salsa, original dub/reggae groups, musicals and concert band music. Andre is also currently with the Central Band of the RNZAF and has performed with many of New Zealand s top artists Sept Wgtn Jazz Club newsletter 4

Chris Fox: Trombone: Chris has been playing with the David Feehan Band (and before that, Tapestry) for years and is an integral part of the David Feehan horn section. Part of the Rodger Fox Big Band, Chris and David grew together in Jazz playing all over the world and throughout NZ Chris has been active in Brass Bands in Porirua with the Fox family and has a high reputation as a trombonist, releasing his own CD and a mainstay of the Rodger Fox Big Band and the four David Feehan albums. Chris Selley: Trumpet and EWI: Chris has been an integral part of the David Feehan Band as well as a member of the RFBB and the Mingus Ensemble. A trumpet tutor in high schools and colleges throughout Wellington, he also arranges the horn charts for the band and David s albums, as well as the NZ Army Band. Chris has played with Patti Austin, Bill Cunliffe, Alan Broadbent and Mike Stern. As well as on the soundtrack to Gayle Preston s movie War Stories Our Mothers Never Told Us Chris also plays the EWI which gives him the ability to cover string and other parts required to complete the arrangements of many songs, adding a huge dimension to the band. These instruments are not easy to play and Chris is one of only a handful in New Zealand who regularly use them. Sean Feehan: Percussion and Vocals: Sean is a multi-instrumentalist who specialises in drums and percussion but who is becoming a sought after vocalist. Besides playing percussion for DFB Sean is also drummer & lead vocalist for his own band Prizm where he writes and arranges most of the material. Sean is also an accomplished dancer and actor with several projects to his credit including the Black Comedy Chicken. Sings duet with David on Respect Yourself on the new Cuatro album. Emma Davey: Vocals: A graduate of Whitireia Music Conservatorium, Emma has been in DFB for many years besides having her own band and an album to her credit, The Court of Love. Entirely self-penned, released in Emma has an amazing voice and can sing in all genres, with fantastic harmony abilities, and is highly respected as a vocal tutor. Has sung both lead, and harmonies on recording projects with David, and the 3 successful Julie Lamb albums and appears on a duet with David on Bronze, his third album. Fiona Bee: Vocals: From Kapiti, Fiona is a graduate in Performing Arts from Christchurch and is a well-known Vocal Teacher on the Kapiti Coast 2016 Sept Wgtn Jazz Club newsletter 5

besides joining David and Emma in producing the Tapestry Singers Concerts twice a year (35 concerts so far) in Wellington for up to 30 students each time. She joined DFB in 2015 after recording with him on his last two albums and is much sought after as a harmony singer but has her own incredible voice as well, specialising in Jazz/Blues and huge ballads and featuring in a duet with David on Bronze. Jamie Musuva: Vocals: Jamie is the latest to join DFB, but has been involved with the band and the singer s concerts for several years. With an amazing soulful voice, she is church trained so has a great gospel-type harmony voice, blends well with the other singers in the band and has also been involved in the last recording project. A huge asset to the band and a very versatile singer. Jamie will perform with David, their Duet Going Back which will appear on David s fifth album to be released in Support Band at 4:00 pm Scots College Band NZ School of Music Combo Competition Victoria University Student Union Building Room SU310 on Thurs 15 Sept 2016, at 5pm.
