1 Arturo Stable good taste, sense of the right volume, timing, and compositional skills are rare attributes to most contemporary percussionists. Arturo Stable has got those and much more.. -Paquito D'Rivera 2007
2 Biography The winds of change are blowing through the Latin jazz world. Increasingly, they are as fresh as they are strong, signaling the emergence of new stylistic directions for the venerable genre and the arrival of the idiom's next generation of innovators and leaders. In the vanguard of the movement's most talented young exponents is Arturo Stable, an energetic, resourceful and innovative free spirit whose broad range of talents defies easy categorization. Stable was born in Santiago de Cuba, the cradle of the island nation's most important center of culture and home of such elemental music styles as the Guajira and Son. Nurtured in a family deeply involved in the performing and visual arts and encouraged by his father Arturo Sr., a musician and a painter, it's not surprising that the youngster began his formal study of music at the age of four, taking piano and theory lessons. When the family moved to Havana, he continued his music education. He earned his first degree, in percussion, at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory, the same esteemed institution that has over the decades groomed the talents of countless other celebrated Cuban musicians, among them pianists Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Hilario Durán and saxophonist Yosvany Terry. In 1993, Stable relocated to Puebla, Mexico, a bustling metropolis south of Mexico City. While there he polished his skills as a percussionist working as a sideman, performing everything from Latin jazz to rock and traditional Latin styles with such noted artists as Los Hermanos Castro, a famed Mexican vocal group, and flamenco guitarist Roberto Amaya. He also began his career as an educator, teaching classical and Afro-Cuban percussion at the Puebla State University (Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla). At the same time, Stable continued his quest of knowledge, pursuing a post-graduate degree in music education from the Puebla State Development University (Universidad del Desarrollo del Estado de Puebla). His rapidly expanding talents did not go unnoticed. In 2001, Stable received a scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music, where he earned a degree in Contemporary Writing and Production and cultivated friendships with many of the musicians who accompany him on Notes on Canvas. Stable has gained invaluable experience performing or recording with such illustrious leaders as Dave Samuels, Paquito D Rivera, Jane Bunnett, David Sanchez, Victor Mendoza, Hector Martignon, Leonel Loueke, Lincoln Goines, Giovanni Hidalgo, Miguel Zenon as well as with the Caribbean Jazz Project and the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, where he accompanied pianist Peter Nero. Today a resident of the Bronx, he serves as an endorser of and clinician for Latin Percussion
3 Project #1 Arturo Stable Contemporary Quintet. This accelerating and energetic band is a passionate synthesis of Cuban folklore and American Jazz. The music is contemporary, fresh and is full of textures and musical colors. It belongs to the new current of Latin jazz styles that is starting to grow stronger every day, inspired by the work of Artist such as Danilo Perez and David Sanchez. He attended Berklee from 1997 to 2000, graduating with a bachelor s degree in performance. In 2003, after moving to New York City, Javier recorded his debut album for Fresh Sound New Talent Records, Introducing the Javier Vercher Trio. In the following two years, Vercher started to present his music in festivals with his trio featuring guitarist, Lionel Loueke. They performed at the Madrid Jazz Festival, Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival, Valencia Jazz Festival and other renowned Spanish venues. In November of 2006, Javier won the Tete Montoliu Outstanding Musician of the year award, given by the SGAE in Spain. Other honored guests that year included Chick Corea and Federico Lechner. In 2007, he released his second album together with Hungarian Drummer Ferenc Nemeth. The Album is entitled Wheel of Time and features Lionel Loueke on guitar and renowned American songwriter, Chip Taylor. 5 Drums: Henry Cole Twenty eight year old drummer Henry Cole emerged onto the music scene in old San Juan in 1999 where he studied classical percussion at the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico. However, it was not until a few years later--while attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston-- that Cole s musical evolution pointed him naturally towards the jazz tradition. He went back home with a new energy and focus and performed as the house drummer for the 1st Annual Jazzboriken Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He played with such Latin jazz luminaries as Giovanni Hidalgo, Bobby Valentin, Anthony Carrillo, Dave Valentin, and Paoli Mejias. In the fall of 2003, Cole took a big step forward and moved to New York City to attend the prestigious Manhattan School of Music where he received a scholarship to study with drummer/composer John Riley. In less than two years, Cole has performed with internationally recognized musicians such as David Sanchez, Claudio Roditi, Eduard Simon,The Chico O'Farril Afrocuban Big Band, Andy Gonzales, Ray Barreto,Orlando "Puntilla" Rios, Papo Vazquez, Michelle Roosewoman, Paquito d Rivera,David "Fathead" Newman,Dave Samuels, among many others. He has toured all over the United States, Mexico, Central America, Europe and Greece. As he did in Puerto Rico, Henry Cole is fast becoming an important member of the New York and International jazz community. He has become one of the most in-demand and influential Puertorican jazz drummers.
6 Bass: Edward Perez Bassist and composer Edward Pérez stays active in New York s jazz, latin jazz, and south american music scenes. His bass has been heard in major festivals such as Vitoria (Spain 2006), Moers (Germany 2006), Valencia (Spain 2006), Stimmen (Switzerland 2007), and Lima (Peru 2002, 2004, 2005) and he has shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Mick Goodrick, George Garzone, Hector Martignon, Greg Hopkins, Lionel Loueke, and Martin Bejerano. On any given night in the city, he may be found playing anything from traditional afroperuvian music to modern jazz, and he has appeared in many of the key nightspots including the Blue Note, Lincoln Center, Iridium, Dizzy's, Jazz Gallery, Zinc Bar, Smalls, Fat Cat, Tonic, 55 Bar, and Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
