Audio Course in PN The Stomach (Creative Sounds) is running a two day sound engineering course for local secondary students during the holidays. Dates: April Cost: $20 Venue: 84 Lombard Street, PN Register: admin@creativesounds.org.nz This is an introduction to live sound engineering. Students will learn about the concepts and tools used in sound engineering as well as getting hands on experience with a PA system. No prior experience necessary. Shannen Petersen, Music Prefect and Audio Programme Leader at PNGHS, will be helping out at the workshop. If you are interested, do feel free to / speak with her about this course. Audio PNGHS by Shannen Petersen Nigel Mauchline from The Stomach ran a sound engineering workshop with the audio class. He taught us about gain staging (a more efficient way of mixing), and some basic frequency equalisation, to help us get a better sound at our school concerts and other music events. It was very valuable to have a sound engineer fill in gaps in our knowledge, and to be able to respond to any questions we had. Opening night.. is rapidly approaching as we eagerly await the season for this years GHS/ BHS production. Make sure you book your tickets and support our students. Musica Viva Young Performers Scholarship Sponsored by the Rotary Club of PN, entries for instrumental (Grade 7+), piano (Grade 7+) and voice (Grade 6+) categories close on 29 th March. There is more info on the Music notice board or talk with your private teacher. Y9 Meet and Greet Thanks to musicians Eli Turu and Shannen Petersen who performed on voice/ guitar - solo and together - for this event. As the weather was unsettled they performed on the Huia stage rather than the outdoor stage. 4

6 Introducing your 2018 Music Leaders You can contact any of the leaders on their school addresses. They are happy to answer questions related to our music programmes or to assist you individually. Hi! I'm Shannen, the Music Prefect. I've been involved in music at PNGHS since Year 9, in all sorts of things. I've played trumpet, saxophone, banjo, mandolin, ukelele, as well as piano, guitar and tuba - which are my main three now. I play guitar and sing in Fruit Juice Parade (with Tharushi Bowatte), as well as play tuba in the concert band. I also write songs that I play solo. My other love is sound engineering, so it would make sense that I'm Audio Programme Leader too. As a female musician I definitely notice the lack of women in tech-y music roles, so I'm trying to change that, because sound engineering is something I really enjoy, and I think I could be really good at it. I also spend a lot of time at The Stomach, so if you want to come to a gig, let me know. I can also arrange a tour if you'd like that. Let's be friends! My name is Marian Sun and I am the Instrumental Programme Leader. This is my second year in this role, and I really love getting involved and promoting music around the school. My job is to give support to instrumentalists and help organise music events such as the piano competition and school music concerts. I play both the flute and piano and enjoy playing in orchestras and chamber music groups. I also enjoy accompanying school choirs. This year I am a part of the Manawatu Youth Orchestra and the NZ Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra. If you have any questions regarding the music department or music in general, feel free to approach or contact me at any time. Hi, my name is Emily MacKay and I am the Vocal Programme Leader. My love of music began at a young age, as I was surrounded by a family who all loved music. I was pretty much singing before I could speak and have never really stopped! Over my school life I have been a part of numerous productions and I hope to continue this well into my future. My grandmother taught me how to play the recorder when I was 4, which naturally evolved into taking up flute lessons when I was 8 years old. I have been playing flute ever since and have been a part of a number of music groups, from big bands to small chamber music groups, and have always loved it. I am passionate about music and am excited to see what this year holds in store, both personally and for the school. Hi my name is Amy Srichantra and I am the Music Committee Leader and String Orchestra Performance Leader for. I have a big passion for both my main instruments, the violin and the piano. Music has been a part of me since I started my schooling and it has grown up with me throughout my childhood years. The Classical repertoire is my most favourite type of music to play, especially the Romantic period pieces composed by eg. Chopin, Brahms, Schubert etc. My vision for this year is for our PNGHS students and Music Department to be more involved in the musical, cultural aspect that reflects on our school and students. We can all learn from the diversity of the types of music and cultures that have not been explored before in the musical side. I am looking forward to another great year filled with music making and having fun with everyone! I m Nicole Cheng, and I m your Music Volunteers Programme Leader. Aside from being your local klutz and perfectionist, I harbour a profound love for music. I find myself more drawn to classical music, and within that scope, piano work, as I am a pianist myself and have been learning for roughly 10 years. Other musical endeavours include the viola, which I began learning four years ago, and I have learnt to both appreciate the warm, rich timbre, 6

7 as well as not underestimate the heaviness and exertion that emerges from playing. I also enjoy singing, and am in my third year of being in the school s high performance choir, Cantatrices, with whom I am close friends with and share my love for music with. I hope I am able to convey this love to everyone throughout the year, and give music its justified, larger presence in the school. Nice to meet you.
