6 DEGREE PROGRAMS We welcome your interest in the Horton School of Music (HSM) at Charleston Southern University. We have four primary majors in music from which to choose: Bachelor of Arts in Music Education - Choral or Instrumental, Bachelor of Arts in Music & Worship Leadership, Bachelor of Arts in Performance - Instrumental or Vocal and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy. All are approved by the National Association of Schools of Music. Bachelor of Arts in Music Education - Choral or Instrumental: Students who wish to be qualified for South Carolina certification upon graduation to teach music in the kindergarten through 12th grade level. Charleston Southern University is the only university in the lower part of the state that is National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) approved at the undergraduate music education level and offers both choral and instrumental certifications. In addition to practical teaching experiences and education music courses, music education students participate extensively in ensembles, private studio instruction and are required to present a 30-minute recital on their major instrument. A full semester of student teaching is the capstone of the Music Education degree. Bachelor of Arts in Music & Worship Leadership: Includes three core areas of emphasis: music, worship and Christian studies. The standard music core (33 credit hours) includes music theory, music history, conducting and voice training. Students will receive two years of voice instruction prior to one year of commercial voice study. Our goal is to teach the student to maintain vocal health while singing in a modern style. Students may choose either keyboard or guitar study to complement their voice training. The music core meets the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accreditation standards for a Bachelor of Arts in Music. A second core area is worship studies. In addition to classes in congregational song, church music education and worship leadership administration, we have added classes that focus on the history of worship, planning biblically sound worship services, worship technology and contemporary music theory/arranging. Two significant additions are a 10-week internship (with a local church ministry) and a senior worship project. A Christian studies core includes Old and New Testaments, systematic theology, Christian leadership and evangelism. Music and Worship Leadership students will graduate with a background in Christian doctrine and a solid biblical foundation to support worship planning and song writing. Bachelor of Arts in Performance - Instrumental, Piano or Vocal: Students who wish to pursue extensive study in voice, piano or an instrument. The coursework for the student majoring in this degree involves intensive studio study, participation in solo and ensemble performances and requires a 30-minute junior and a 60-minute senior recital. The Horton School of Music performance faculty are members of, and perform regularly, with renowned professional music organizations such as the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Jazz Orchestra, North Charleston Pops Orchestra and are frequent recitalists on the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Members of the faculty are international recitalists and have professional recordings and Grammy nominations to their credit. Performance majors frequently choose to continue their studies in graduate school or become private studio instructors. Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy: Charleston Southern was the first school in South Carolina to offer the Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy and has been accredited since the late 1970s. Music therapy students work with children, adults and senior citizens with various disabilities, using music to help them achieve therapeutic nonmusical goals and to improve their quality of life. Music Therapy students must complete all music courses required by other music majors plus courses in psychology and music therapy. The culmination of the degree is a six-month internship at a site approved by the American Music Therapy Association.

7 PERFORMING ENSEMBLES The Horton School of Music provides a breadth of musical experience as well as individual attention for students in the studio, in classes and in the many and varied ensembles. Our numerous opportunites allow students to reach their fullest musical potential. In recent years, our students have achieved recognition by performing in more than seven countries, American Choral Directors Association state and regional conventions, South Carolina Music Educators Association convention, winning state and regional National Association of Teachers of Singing competitions, presenting music therapy research at state and regional professional conferences, and being awarded numerous teaching positions at schools throughout the region. Bel Canto: Bel Canto was established as the CSU Women s Chorale in the fall of 1999 under the direction of Jennifer Canfield with only 18 singers. Throughout the past 13 years, they have continued to receive high praise for their excellence in choral performance and promoting the beauty of the treble voice through performances on campus and throughout the area. Bel Canto is a nonauditioned vocal ensemble and is open to any woman on campus who enjoys singing wonderful choral literature. Concert Singers: The Concert Singers is an auditioned vocal ensemble specializing in music of all genres. The 28-member group is composed of music majors, music minors and nonmajors and has performed throughout the East Coast as well as Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, England, Germany, Scotland, and most recently Italy and Catalunya, Spain. They have performed twice at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and at St. Patrick s Church in New York City in addition to performing at various schools and churches located in Virginia, New Jersey, South Carolina and Florida. Jazz Band and Jazz Combo: The Jazz Band provides students with the opportunity to play jazz music in a large ensemble setting covering styles from the swing era to present day. Permission from the director or audition is required. The Jazz Combo is a small group of students which provides students the opportunity to perform in an improvisation-based small group setting. The group performs regularly on campus and in the community throughout the school year. Open to all qualified university students. Lyric Theatre: Lyric Theatre produces a season of fully staged productions, opera and musical revues, cabaret or other scene style productions each year. Since its inaugural season in 2003, Lyric Theatre has produced South Pacific, Oklahoma, The Music Man, The Wizard of Oz, Show Boat, The 1940s Radio Hour and Anything Goes. Opera productions have included Suor Angelica and Cosí fan tutte (sung in English), Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Old Maid and the Thief, Little Red Riding Hood and Down in the Valley. Lyric Theatre has also performed in the Piccolo Spoleto Festival and has offered performances for thousands of public and private school students in the Charleston area. Auditions are open to all Charleston Southern students. Marching Band (Fall) / Symphonic Band (Spring): New members receive a $1,000 stipend for the first year, and the award grows each year to $2,000 by your senior year. The time commitment is much less than for high school band. Band camp occurs the week before classes begin, not in the middle of the summer. The marching band only practices during class time and game days. The performances are limited to an average of five home and two away games only - not every weekend! Members of the Marching Band will rotate into various squads for Basketball Pep Band performances. Members of the Symphonic Band will also serve in a Lab Band capacity to work with music education/conducting majors. Wind Ensemble/Instrumental Chamber Ensembles: The Wind Ensemble at Charleston Southern is the select wind and percussion ensemble of the university. The ensemble performs the finest literature available for winds and percussion from the Renaissance through the 21st century, both as a large group and in smaller woodwind, brass and percussion ensembles. Membership in the Wind Ensemble is by audition or permission of the instructors. Wind Ensemble meets both fall and spring semesters at 1:30 Monday, Wednesday and Friday for large ensemble and at various times for smaller ensembles. Scholarships are available.

All prospective students are eligible for music scholarships based on successful completion of an audition. To register for an audition, please fill out the Music Scholarship Application and return it as soon as possible. It is recommended you audition for a music scholarship during your senior year of high school. An audition date and time will be scheduled after receiving your Music Scholarship Application form. (A contemporary Christian selection or hymn may be substituted for one of the selections for the Music & Worship Leadership students.) Each selection should be under four minutes in length and be of contrasting styles. Contemporary songs in strophic form only need to be two to three verses long. Performing from memory is recommended. An accompanist will be provided if requested in advance or you may bring your own. Performers should also be prepared to play major and minor scales (at least two-octave scales preferred). Wind Instruments: Students will audition with a prepared solo or an etude, or technical exercises, from a standard method book. The prepared solo must exhibit both lyrical and technical ability. An All-State audition solo is also acceptable. Students will also be asked to perform the major scales and complete a short sight reading. Guitar: Students will audition with two prepared solos or excerpts in several contrasting styles which best show the student s range of technical and musical abilities. Performance from memory is encouraged. The following two octave scales are required: C-Major, G-Major, A-Minor, D-Major, A-Major, A-Minor pentatonic and E-Minor pentatonic. Students will also be asked to demonstrate a working knowledge of major and minor chord forms. j Charleston Southern University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and NCATE (for teacher certification) and offers majors in Music Education (Instrumental or Choral), Music Performance, Music Therapy and Music & Worship Leadership.
