2 SYNOPSIS: Amahl and the Night Visitors is about a stop that the Three Kings make on their journey to seek an unknown, but wondrous, new-born child. They request lodging for the night in a shepherd s hut of an impoverished widow and her crippled son, Amahl. As the mother s cupboard is bare, villagers come with meager offerings of food for the Kings. A young couple entertains them with a dance. Amahl is intrigued by the luggage they are carrying, so the Kings show the little family the riches they plan to present the mysterious child. Finally, all settle to sleep around a modest fire. Because of her need to provide for her son and lured by the Kings gold, the mother is caught trying to steal it. She repents and the Kings forgive her. The pure-hearted Amahl offers his crutch as a gift to the child that the Kings seek. In this moment of selfless generosity the child is miraculously healed. As the Kings prepare to continue their journey, Amahl s mother consents to let him accompany them as they seek the child. In a world of Black Fridays and Cyber Mondays, this is a work whose message can bond generations in the idea that miracles are wrought from the selfless acts of pure hearts. BACKGROUND: Although known as a stage work and the most frequently-produced opera in the world today, Amahl and the Night Visitors was the first opera commissioned for television. It premiered on NBC Television s 1951 Opera Theatre on Christmas eve as the first Hallmark Hall of Fame production. Gian Carlo Menotti wrote the words and music and staged the opera for its television premiere. He was assisted by composer Samuel Barber. The premiere was conducted by Thomas Schippers. An estimated audience of five million viewers saw that first live performance on television, which became an annual holiday tradition for many years, including new productions by NBC and versions by the BBC. With such creators at the helm, it is no wonder that this work has remained a staple of the popular repertoire since its premiere. SET DESIGN: The unusual OFC set concept is based on the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch (late 15th/early 16th century Dutch painter) whose work is known for its use of fantastic imagery to illustrate moral and religious concepts and narratives. Menotti was specifically inspired in writing Amahl and the Night Visitors by Bosch s Adoration of the Magi multi-panel, hinged wooden triptych (his most famous work is the Garden of Earthly Delights ). Working with scenic designer James Bazewicz, we chose material from a different Bosch triptych of the same name, Adoration 2/6
3 of the Magi for its theatrical storybook feeling. Once opened, the triptych becomes the architectural structure for the hut. A door and window are cut into the side panels and a large drawer/bed cut into the center section. The painting of the central panel is the only artwork on the set not inspired directly by Bosch. OFC artistic director Brian Clay Luedloff wanted a large Madonna and Child to echo the warm relationship between Amahl and his mother. The result is an amalgam of several different images that were used for inspiration. The set was originally produced for LyriCo: the Light Opera Company of St. Louis and built by the scenic shop at Lyric Opera of Kansas City. PERFORMERS: OFC is fortunate to have Nathaniel Braswell in the role of Amahl, a talented young singer with whom northern Colorado audiences are very familiar. Joining Nathaniel are Antoine Hodge and the OFC Apprentice Artists. The performance features guest conductor Glen Cortese (The Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra), the Fort Collins Symphony, the OFC Chorus, and dancers Alexandra Trosper and Arthur Beutel. The Mission of Opera Fort Collins is to entertain, enrich and educate through the professional presentation of opera productions and community engagement programs. OFC is a non-profit performing arts organization. Post Office Box 503. Fort Collins.
