10 Stormy Weather Music excerpts from Ein Alpensinfonie by Richard Strauss Lesson by Kimberly Nolen Concepts: beamed sixteenth notes, creative Movement, rhythmic composition/ arrangement Materials: Recording of Ein Alpensinfonie ( Gewitter und sturm section approx ), visuals with iconic representation of rhythms, (optional: pictures, slideshows, videos etc.) 1. Warm Up (stretches, vocalizations, etc.) to Ein Alpensinfonie. 2. Discuss in partners/small groups then share as a class the musical elements of the piece that create a stormy, musical atmosphere, (Instrumentation, timbre, tempo). 3. Create body percussion rainstorm by introducing rhythm first through text then by adding original or unique body percussion. Introduce weather text/iconic Notation to complement the rhythm or have students make up their own!

11 lorem! ipsum dolor 4. Extend by adding creative movements to body percussion, making it more dance-like. Encourage students to incorporate locomotion through the room. 5. Extensions! Have students create an ostinato. Develop instrumentation to include un-pitched percussion instruments and even pitched instruments. Incorporate poems that represent different weather conditions and have students dramatize through instrumentation and dance. Include note cards with Iconic notation on one side and
