1 Term 1 Rhythm For your homework task this term, you should complete the questionnaire task below, then choose one more of the tasks from the grid. The homework should be completed on plain or lined paper unless otherwise stated if you need some paper ask Mr Pate. Music Questionnaire This is a compulsory homework task ALL students must complete this short online questionnaire then choose one other task Go to the web address: bit.ly/year7homework Answer the questions and submit your responses at the bottom of the page. African Music Research Make a poster or booklet about traditional african music. Use the internet to help you research this topic. You should include: What traditional instruments are used? What are polyrhythms? How are they used in African music? What is African music used for? (Eg. Dancing, communication) What African festivals use music? Any other interesting information you can find! African Music Review Find a piece of traditional African music to listen to. If you are not sure where to start, try searching YouTube. Write a review which includes: The name of the song and performer(s) What instruments are used How would you describe the sound of the song? Do you like it? If so why? Does the piece remind you of anything? Can you picture anything in your mind when you hear it?

2 Term 2 Voiceworks For your homework task this term, you should choose one more of the tasks from the grid below. Voice Types Poster Make a poster explaining the difference between bass, tenor, alto and soprano singers. Your poster should contain examples of singers who fit each voice type. You could also include examples of songs which are mainly sung by each voice type. You may also include vocal ranges and other advanced information. A capella performance Note: You will need access to a voice recorder (e.g. computer, phone, tablet) and the internet for this task. Develop an a capella performance of a song of your choice. This may be solo or in a group. If you are in a group, you may each choose to sing different parts. Advanced performances might have harmony parts. You should record your performance and submit this by ing a copy of the recording to d.pate@bristolfreeschool.org.uk before the hand in date. A guide to singing Create a guide to singing which includes: Information about warming up Information about breath control Suggestions for good songs to get started Information on voice types Guidance on using a microphone. Any other information you think a singer should know

3 Term 3 Melody and the Keyboard Homework For your homework task this term, you should choose one of the tasks from the grid below. The homework should be completed on plain or lined paper unless otherwise stated if you need some paper ask Mr Pate. Some tasks require internet access you can use homework club if you don t have access at home, or you can complete the tasks which do not require internet access. Finally, there is nothing to stop you completing more than one homework task why not challenge yourself to all three to find out even more about the topic we are studying this term. Note Names Guide Make a guide to remembering the notes on a musical staff. Use the rhymes Every Good Boy Deserves Food and FACE to help you OR make up your own! Your guide could be in the form of a poster, leaflet, or any other way you choose to present this information. Just make sure it helps people remember the names of the notes on a musical staff! Music Review Find a piece of music that uses a piano or electronic keyboard as one of the main instruments in the song. Write a review of this piece of music in the style of a music magazine. Your review should include: How would you describe this piece of music? What does it sound like? How is the piano or keyboard used? What other instruments can you hear? Do you like this piece? If so, why? Tell us about the artist who wrote this song. What is the song about? Your review should be at least half a side of A4 long. Melody Composition Note: You will need internet access and an account for this homework task Go to and sign up for a free account (you will need an address). Then choose new score to start a new blank project. Your task is to either: a) add notes to programme in a well known melody of your choice (eg. Twinkle twinkle little star) or b) make up a melody of your own. It should last 8 bars and have a clear start and end point. When you have finished, either print off your finished melody and hand it in, or your work to d.pate@bristolfreeschool.org.uk before the hand in date.

4 Term 4 - The Elements of Music Homework For your homework task this term, you should choose one of the tasks from the grid below. Finally, there is nothing to stop you completing more than one homework task why not challenge yourself to all three to find out even more about the topic we are studying this term. Elements of Music Guide Make a guide to remembering the eight elements of music Pitch, Tempo, Texture, Dynamics, Timbre, Structure, Duration and Silence. Your guide could be in the form of a poster, leaflet, or any other way you choose to present this information. Your guide should explain what all of the elements of music mean eg. The pitch is how high or low a note is. You could also make up a mnemonic for remembering the 8 elements (research what mnemonic means!) The Orchestra Guide Make a guide to remembering the four sections of the orchestra strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. Your guide could be in the form of a poster, leaflet, or any other way you choose to present this information. Your guide should feature examples of instruments in each section (using pictures would be a good idea!), and the key characteristics of instruments in each section (for example: Percussion instruments are played by scraping, shaking or hitting the instrument ). You could also include a diagram of where each section sits in the orchestra. Music Review Write a review of a song of your choice, focused around the 8 elements of music. First: Describe the song, what it is about, who it is by, and why you like it. Then: Write a paragraph for each element of music describing how it is used in the song. Eg. TEMPO How fast/slow is the piece? Does the speed change? TIMBRE What instruments and sounds can you hear in the piece? STRUCTURE Are there verses and choruses? Is there an introduction? DURATION Are there any long held down notes, or very short notes?

5 Term 5 World Music China Homework For your homework task this term, you should choose one of the tasks from the grid below. Music of China A Beginners Guide Create a beginners guide to traditional Chinese music. Your guide should include: The history and development of this style of music. Common instruments used Key musical features how would you describe this style? What musical techniques are commonly used? Important musicians working in this style, and famous pieces of music they have written. How does this style of music reflect the country it was developed in? Your guide could be in the form of a leaflet, poster, or written document. Chinese Music Review Write a review of a piece of traditional Chinese music, in the style of a music magazine. You will need to research the artist for information to include in your review. Your review should include: How would you describe this piece of music? What does it sound like? What instruments can you hear? Do you like this piece? If so, why? Tell us about the artist who wrote this piece. What is the song about? Is this piece typical of Chinese music? What key characteristics can you hear? Are there any differences? Your review should be at least ¾ of a side of A4 long. If you re not sure what song to review search online for some ideas! Chinese Music Composition Compose a piece of music using the pentatonic scale (just the black notes on the keyboard!). You can work in any musical style, but must be able to explain how your piece was influenced by music from China. You may use music technology for this task. You should submit your piece as: Written musical notation, including as much detail as possible about how the piece should be performed. An mp3 file of the finished piece. 6 Term 6 Revision To help you revise for your test, you can use this sheet, your booklets, and a revision guide I have prepared for you. You can access this revision guide by going to then downloading the Y7 revision guide powerpoint. In this assessment you will be tested on the following: Term 1 Rhythm Be able to identify crotchets, quavers, minims, semibreves and rests. You should know how many beats each one lasts for. Term 2 - Voiceworks Know the key words A capella, unison, and harmony. Term 3 The Keyboard Be able to recognise note names from musical notation. Be able to find and label notes on the keyboard Term 4 The Elements of Music Know the elements of music and what they mean Pitch, dynamics, tempo, duration, texture, structure, timbre, silence. Know the instrument families in the orchestra Be able to comment on how the elements are used in a musical extract. Term 5 Music from China Recognise sharps and flats Understand what is meant by the pentatonic scale Term 6 - Chords Know what a chord is, and be able to play them on the keyboard from musical notation
