8 The design and layout are probably the most important factors when specifying an HD Video system. From a simple point to point extender set over cat5e/6 or a splitter system to a multi-room, multi-source installation a number of factors must be taken into account. How many rooms require HD video? How many video sources and type? What control do they require i.e. IR or RS232 Are 3rd party control systems required Where is the equipment located? How long is the run and how many cables are required? What is the cable route from source to TV? Upgrade/future proofing Failure at the first stage of design and specification may lead to costly and time consuming mistakes along with an unstable system. Always endeavour to ensure the customer is fully understanding of the system and its capabilities and wherever possible build in future proofing. Ensure High quality cables are specified and installed throughout. Be mindful of the distances involved and the route to be taken for cabling, Hi powered mains cabling, kinks, poor termination and over long cable lengths will impact on the systems operational stability. 8

Ensure the equipment is installed in an accessible ideally centralized location. The cable route is as short as possible. Ensure bends are kept to a minimum and with a large radius.

Keep HDMI and UTP Cables away from mains wiring 300mm and above is the recommended distance with 150mm as the minimum distance. Do not kink, or tie in knots or cable tie too tightly. Ensure the cable/s utilised are reputable high specification brand with sufficient headroom (bandwidth) for existing and future formats ( 4k for example). Do additional ( duplicate cables) require to be specified for additional features or control additions in the future? 3 or more connections in the cable run can reduce the maximum transmission run by 10% ( i.e wall plates, couplers, switches patch panels) Patch panels can differ markedly on data rates ensure it has sufficient bandwidth for the high data steams required with HD Video content. 9

10 With any video distribution system the whole infrastructure is reliant on the cables quality and specification,length and termination. As the demand for higher resolutions in video, 3D capability along with High Definition audio, the data streams are increasing ; placing much more demand on the cables ability to carry the data at high speeds over long distances. HDMI Cables. The majority of todays HDMI cables are High Speed that are 3D compliant along with ARC ( Audio Return) and Ethernet capabilities, however do not assume that a high speed 1 metre cable that has a data rate of 19 Gbps will also apply to a 15 metre cable it is quite feasible that the 15 metre HDMI will only pass 2.25Gbps. So what does all this mean..? As the length of the HDMI cable increases its performance decreases with regard to bandwidth ( data stream) e.g. The longer 15 metre cable is unlikely to operate effectively with a Bluray 3D video as this may require in excess of 4.46Gbps bandwidth. This may lead to either no picture at all, inability to display 3D images, handshake issues, drop-out or speckles. Always ensure that the cables are kept to a minimum length and are ever kinked twisted or excessive stain is applied to either the HDMI plug on the cable ends or the socket on the source or TV/projector. Never Hot swap an HDMI cable (removing or inserting) whilst the source or TV/ Projector are switched on this may damage the delicate electronics and chipsets leading to premature failure or in some cases an immediate fault due to shorting of the pins. 10

Screened types ( STP/FTP) can be utilised however these cable types be problematic if the shielding is incorrectly or unterminated at the receiver end ( TV) this is more prone to EMF /interference leading to potential IR control issues and or image stability. TP = Twisted pair U = Unshielded F = Foil shielding S = braided shielding Stranded cat 5 is not recommended as it has poor bandwidth and can cause speckles and handshake issues. Solid cat5e is superior and a more stable transmission cable Cat6 has larger conductors which improves again on bandwidth plus has additional mechanical support provided by the inner core. Example home broadband may be 20mbs - 4K By 2K resolutions require 10.2Gbps; cat6 would be the cable choice in this instance. 11

The receiver ( RX) is utilised with the QI Matrix as part of a 4 by 4 matrix system. The Pro series differs from the QI requires 2 UTP to facilitate Video and audio; UTP connection 1 carries the IR and HDCP UTP 2 carries the video and audio content. The single UTP version available does not offer IR control and only has a single UTP connection. Note a 2UTP Receiver can be used with 1 UTP cable in connection 2 but only with a UTP splitter or Pro matrix that offers single mode settings. 12

In addition these also provide serial pass through either as an extender set or via the respective HDBaseT Matrices. The receiver ( RX) is utilised with the HDBaseT Matrix as part of an 8 by 8, 8 by 16 or 16 by 16 matrix system. The EDID versions adds edid management & the POE model Offers full 5 Play negating the requirement for power for the receiver. 13

14 The Wyrestorm EX-1COAX-IR-75 is a single cable point to point extender set that uses copper-core 75 Ohm Coax cable as a means of transmitting 1080p HD video@60hz 24 Bit Colour Depth and multi-channel audio on cable runs up to 60m with wide-band, two way IR control from either source or display location and includes switches for EDID management. The 3D variant due in 2013 will have a maximum transmission capability of 50 metres at 1080P. The use of Coax to distribute and control HD signals between sources and displays is effective due to the low loss at high frequencies, vital for the cable television, satellite television and cable modem installations it is typically utilised. BNC connection is provided for the coaxial cable along with HDMI In/Out and 3.5mm connectivity for IR TX/RX on both transmitter and receiver devices. In addition EDID dipswitches are provided for management of differing TV / Projector capabilities. 14

The SP-UTP-0104 and SP- UTP-0108 both offer single HD source distribution, providing uncompressed true HD distribution over long distances only using Cat5e/6/7 cabling, with the ability to control the source from display locations. Dip switches provide EDID management and single cable transmission if the IR feature is not required. The receivers utilised at the TV/projector are the Pro series RX 50 metre dual or single UTP models. 19

20 Switchers and scalers differ from both splitters and matrices offering different methods of source connection i.e. VGA in and output on HDMI. This allows the installer to offer a flexible solution for differing formats of source device either analogue or digital and be able to switch to different source inputs and output via HDMI. If long transmission lengths are required then a Wyrestorm extender set can be utilised on the output/s to provide additional flexibility in both the placement of the unit and accommodate display devices remote from the switch. Mid Range models offer manual and IR control for source selection, higher end models add RS232 control and up scaling capabilities for improved picture quality along with additional outputs. The 8:1 Multi Format Switch offers 8 inputs to one single HDMI output with manual source selection plus IR control. 20 The 11:2 is a switcher scaler offering comprehensive source switching outputting via HDMI. This model also provides up scaling of sources to 720 p or 1080p and also benefits from Ir and Serial control via the RS232 Serial port. The unit also automatically amplifies and equalizes signals to ensure the optimum HD transmission over the length of the HDMI cable without any loss in quality of picture or audio

21 An HDMI matrix switch will take video from 4, 6, 8 or 16 sources and distribute these sources using from 2 to 16 outputs dependent on model. Any source can be routed to any output so that each display can watch a different source simultaneously. Sources to the HDMI matrix switcher are via the HDMI input connections. To send video to a room that has a run of metres an HDMI cable can be utilised from the HDMI matrix outputs to the display location; longer runs would require a different transmission cable such as cat5e or cat6 outputting from the UTP RJ45 connection (where applicable) or an extender set (if only HDMI outputs are featured on the matrix) with the matching receiver that converts the signal back to an HDMI output. only Standard/Compact matrices offer HDMI inputs and HDMI outputs with IR control of the matrix and Global IR source control. The Pro series of matrices utilise two UTP cables Port 2 carries the AV signal and port 1 carries the IR control and HDCP data. The Qi matrix offers UTP outputs with one way IR control of the matrix and routed Ir control of the sources via a single cat5e/cat6 cable up to 40 metres maximum transmission distance. HDBT and lite variants (PP) provide longer transmission distances over a single cat5e/cat6 cable with two way IR for Matrix, routed source control and display IR control up to 70 metres on the lite PP variants plus simultaneous HDMI outputs; the 6 by 6 and 8 by 8 PP models also support the TX format daughter cards and HDBT digital amplifiers. The HDBT matrices offer 100 metres transmission and 4K resolution capabilities in addition to serial and 100 mb of Ethernet but do not feature HDMI outputs both models have serial LAN and IP featured as control methods for 3 rd party control and integration. 21

24 Handshakes - problematic or slow handshakes may well be issues with EDID or HDCP however, it should be noted that a poor installation can also be symptomatic with handshakes. Four TV's at 1080P and one TV at 720P The matrix will automatically manage the EDID however, if all TV's were viewing a DVD the resolution would be 720p not 1080P as expected why? When a mixture of differing resolution TV s are viewing the same source it will manage the EDID to the lowest resolution in this case 720P. However Wyrestorm products offer extensive EDID management options to facilitate this please see the following excerpts from the MX0606PP operating manual. 24

25 ATTENTION: Changes to the DIP switch settings should be made with the matrix OFF, ideally with all power cables and HDMI leads and UTP cables removed to guard against electrostatic build up that may damage your system. DO NOT HOTSWAP your cables when changing DIP SETTINGS. ALL changes to the DIP settings become effective upon powering ON the matrix. Note: the shaded dip switch denotes an inactive switch so can be set up or down. only To copy the EDID from an HDMI OUTPUT display to a specific INPUT port, first set the DIP switch to this position. Then select the INPUT by pressing and holding the chosen OUTPUT SELECT button for 3 seconds for the EDID to be copied from the DISPLAY to the INPUT port. For example: If OUTPUT 3 is selected for INPUT 1, the EDID for OUTPUT 3 will be copied to INPUT 1 this is achieved by the system setting HDMI OUTPUT as a higher priority than UTP OUTPUT. If EDID copy is not successfully completed, the INPUT Port EDID will remain the unchanged. To reset EDID for all ports, simply set the DIP switch to the above position when the matrix is powered OFF. On powering ON, all ports will revert to the above factory default and DIP switches can be adjusted as necessary. For users who wish to copy EDID from an AV Receiver with 7.1 channel audio to a specific input port containing a Blu-ray player, follow a variation on the instructions above: 1 Set the DIP switch to the above position with the matrix in the OFF position. 2 Connect the AVR to your desired OUTPUT port on the matrix (for example, OUTPUT 2) 3 Power ON the matrix and select your INPUT your chosen SOURCE is connected to (for example, INPUT 3 Blu-ray) 4 Press and hold the OUTPUT SELECT button for 3 seconds for the EDID data to be copied from OUTPUT 2 (AVR) to INPUT 3 (Blu-ray). 25

26 Setting the DIP switch to this position will instruct the matrix to use embedded 1080p 3D compatible video and Stereo audio EDID to encourage communication between the matrix and 3D sources/3d displays if handshake problems are encountered. After setting the DIP switch, reconnect and turn on for the changes to take effect. The matrix will use embedded 1080p video and stereo audio EDID in this DIP setting. After setting the DIP switch, reconnect and turn on for EDID settings to take effect. In instances where a connected display is unable to achieve 1080p resolution (such as using older or cheaper models), this DIP setting will instruct the matrix to use embedded 1080i video and stereo audio EDID to output a signal. After setting the DIP switch, reconnect and turn on for EDID settings to take effect. When set to this DIP position the matrix will use embedded 1080p video with 5.1ch Audio EDID. After setting the DIP switch, reconnect and turn on for EDID settings to take effect. When set to this DIP position the matrix will use embedded 1080p video with 7.1ch Audio EDID. After setting the DIP switch, reconnect and turn on for EDID settings to take effect. Instructs the Matrix to Output a signal regardless of communication between display and source compatibility. This setting may be used to further encourage compatibility between devices if other DIP settings prove unsuccessful in establishing communication. 26
